Wow. That building is massive. 😮 I hope you're right that this is the last in the auto-centric GO Station designs. It is surprising that a station with effectively no plan for non-car trips is still being built in 2021. Anyway, great tour! Thanks for the video.

I remember when i was a kid driving along the 401, I thought the parkades were big station buildings and they made me really excited whenever we;d pass them. learning what they were kinda took a piece of me away. maybe someday those kind of stations will exist now that go is on this new development pattern. also whens the go video lol

If you want to see another example of a recently built piece of car-centred transit infrastructure, take a trip out to Mississauga to see the city's bus rapid transit line. Holy wow! Bus stations aligned along Highway 403, with little thought of making it easy for pedestrians to enter the station.

I think we will see more auto centric designs, but not so egregious as this (i.e. less parkades) I actually think that's good because it means you can transition the land to better uses over time. Something we are already seeing with the redevelopment of some of the parking lots at some inner city stations!

@@RMTransit Remember the area this station is in, is essentially the greenbelt. There isn't (and hopefully never will be) anything walking distance to where the rail line is. So it makes sense to build the parking upwards and save as much greenspace as possible

I think that this station is built for the reality of today rather than what we hope for in the future (that may or may not happen, at least for a while). The reality is that York Region is incredibly car-centric and that isn’t going to change any time soon, unfortunately. This station will at least alleviate and mitigate car traffic into the city, which is certainly better than nothing, but we can all agree far from perfect.

I feel like there were quite a few hints that this station isn't transit oriented. But if it has 6 bus bays, then presumably Metrolinx is leaving it to YRT to adapt their routes to connect to the new station, right?
@OntarioTrafficMan
@OntarioTrafficMan 3 жыл бұрын
I was trying to imagine what possible routes could serve Bloomington, but I honestly couldn't come up with any. It would make no sense to run a bus from Stouffville, because there's already a station there with far better train and bus connections. And it would make no sense to run from Aurora or King City either, for the same reason. The main reason anyone would use the northern part of the Richmond Hill line is just because the parking is full at the Barrie or Stouffville stations. But that is not an issue for people coming in by bus.

The station seems to be future proofing for future suburban development in the general area. In 10-20, I could see it opperating as a local transit hub, with hourly train service and better bus connections. Not every neighborhood can be tightly packed townhouses or condos, even if I wished that were the case, so I'm glad to see GO investing in a really healthy solution to suburban sprawl.

Just an opinion but I actually don't mind it when transit investments overkill it on the infrastructure. To me, the overkill future-proofs the station to protect it from underserving the area surrounding it. With that said, the location of this infrastructure blows my mind a little bit because it is so massive for an area that seems (to me) to be quieter than Gormley. Like do these standalone Go-Stations have an unbelievably huge catchment area?
@OntarioTrafficMan
@OntarioTrafficMan 3 жыл бұрын
Future-proofing is good when there is a conceivable future in which it is useful. For example overbuilding a new station in the city would probably be a good idea. But this station is located in the greenbelt between Aurora and Stouffville, so there will never be anything around it (as long as the province doesn't override their environmental protection legislations). The areas which are served by Gormley are also served by the Barrie or Stouffville lines, and both of those are faster than the Richmond Hill line, and have more ability to expand because their tracks are fully owned by GO.

GO has committed to raise its platforms to 610mm (24 inches) to match the floor of the lower level of the BiLevel coaches. HOWEVER, they cannot start raising platforms until they retrofit ALL of the steps on their coaches with an automatic gap filler so they can provide a level path into the train. Currently the coaches have a step permanently mounted below the doors, which means that if the platform were the same level as the floor, there would be a step down, then a step back up. All new stations are designed for a future platform height of 610mm, but then with a ramp down to the current 127mm platform. You can see this at 4:53.

You complain about the station being “car centric”. Have you seen the location? How if not by car would you like people to get there? Too far from anything for people to walk, maybe about 10 people live close enough to ride a bike, and there is literally no local bus service to deliver commuters to the trains. The station is “car centric” because that is how the vast majority of people that are going to use the station will to get there.

I was just there 2 days ago!! While I do agree with you with regards to the MASSIVE amount of parking they've provided, it'll only be a matter of time before the area around Bloomington and Gormley is similar to that of Rutherford and Maple on the Barrie Line. In fact, large housing developments have already begun next to Gormley and just south of it near Richmond Green. Plus just west of Bloomington is a rather large suburb in the grey zone between the RH and Barrie Lines. So I guess in those respects, Bloomington is both kind of useless and useful, not to mention the number of amenities provided for commuters. Thanks for the amazing video!!

The limitation of GO trains is that they were built on rail lines built in the 19th century to move goods from warehouses and factories, while the GTA's suburbs were built from the 1940s onwards, purposely away from railroads, since nobody has historically wanted to live near them. (That's why it took forward-thinking people to gentrify Toronto's Junction neighbourhood in just the last 20 years.) I can think of only a handful of GO train stations situated in actual neighbourhoods: Guelph, Hamilton, Port Credit, Mimico. But those stations are a minority: most are like Oshawa, Bramalea, and, now, Bloomington. I wish urban planning was better.

The wave has not come yet. The two most advanced battery companies in the world are BYD and CATL. EV Battery costs are going to slide down the curve in accordance with Moore’s law. When the EV price drops $10 thousand dollars below the cost of the IVE vehicle look out. CATL has a sodium ion battery which is 30% cheaper than the lithium ion battery. But it’s heavier and cannot be used in EV’s. The widespread use of these to back up the electric grid means that batteries will no longer be raw material constrained. Cathy Wood from Ark invest believes that this will drop the price to $12 a barrel.

I've heard plenty of comments about this station being overbuilt; but what is a transit project if not built more for the future than the present? Let's be honest, this area is not meant for any sort of development anytime soon, perhaps in 50 years when the protection laws against the Greenbelt are reversed then we can be worried about land-use, but if the building is built in a sustainable manner, if there was a good amount of thought given to the natural surroundings, what's the problem? It would be quite silly to build it here, right off of the highway of all things and not accommodate vehicular traffic. That being said, I do wish YRT would make more of an effort to run direct express buses actually INTO the stations themselves instead of dropping off passengers a ways away and forcing them to traverse a huge parking lot; this is what would get people to use transit more, that and a highly subsidized YRT-GO fare.

I don't think it is a waste of money as much as people think. Instead I see it as a rare case of planning ahead in the GTA. It won't be long before the area is urbanised, and York Region transit services becoming available. In the end, it's much more cost effective to build it before the area is built up than trying to squeeze it in after. Also new roads in the area can be planned around it.

This station looks huge and it reminds me of some transit hub stations I've seen around (I think they're called grand union stations in North America) despite there being just one platform. I'm not keen on the emphasis of park and ride but I do like how visible the platform is from the highway. Wish more of the building isn't focused on parking, but at least it uses multi-storey rather than a much bigger lawn sprawl than some other stations. Hope someday they expand by putting another platform on the other side of the tracks. I was wondering why the entire platform isn't just done at the same height as that bit for accessibility access, but I'm guessing this is to cater to trains with lower boarding doors? Also the canopy is big but I wish it extends further forward closer to the train because most of the platform will probably get wet with any bit of wind when it rains. Thanks for the numerous videos of different aspects of the station though.

I wonder when GO will be switching to electric buses. I see MCI now offers models with 230 miles of range.

I would love to go to the observation deck to look at... 4 trains a day and some buses, and, oh yeah, a massive parking/pick-up drop-off area.

“Parkade” is a Canadian regionalism for parking structure or parking garage. I’d use one of those terms to make your videos more international.

The bricking in the parking area is clever. I wonder if it means to be an environmental feature to allow water to percolate back into the ground rather than having to be trained as a conventional pavement parking lot would have to be.

@@RMTransit Oh! Then even less for its value LOL! I really hope this would be the last of these GO stations with massive concrete parking garages. Transit-oriented stations could probably be built with an eighth of the cost.

Wouldn't it be better to build much smaller stations but at more locations along the route rather than one big giant one? I say this from Australia where most of our train stations outside of the CBD and big business centers are just small buildings with platforms and ticket machines. Some of them don't even have on-site staff.

Its hard because of how difficult working with intense rail freight is!
@archontiverius

But Sydney's commuter rail system also hosts freight trains across almost the entire network. Especially the track to Newcastle and the North Shore line. It's not ideal, but too many freight trains is no excuse for having fewer stations when literally every other country with even a halfway functioning rail network pulls it off.

It's not the same, in NA the networks are freight first and they operate a lot more than in networks that have some hosted freight

@@RMTransit I guess you're right. In Australia, most major cities are on the coast and have their own ports so no need for many trains for imports/exports and only need trains for domestic freight.

Why would you build a new transit station in 2021 without level boarding‽ I mean this in the nicest way possible, but that's just stupid. There clearly wasn't a shortage of concrete given the overbuilt parking garage -- with only four trains per day, are they really expecting to need over 1000 parking spaces? (Even assuming only 1 passenger per car, assuming most people are making round trips would result in a ridiculously optimistic rate of 500 boardings or deboardings per train. As a point of comparison, I looked at the published commuter rail ridership data from Boston in 2018, when the highest combined boardings and deboardings for a single train at a single suburban station was 352... and that was the busiest train at the busiest suburban station on the busiest route.)
@RMTransit
@RMTransit 3 жыл бұрын
1) GO performs really well for commuter rail, so a few hundred people on one train is possible. 2) There will be more trains 3) Level boarding is not so simple because of the way the existing fleet works.

Everything about this is so confusing. It appears to be a wasteful, unnecessary, and enormous parking structure in the middle of nowhere that you can get to by train *maaaaybe* if you plan really hard and then get “blessed” with a viewing platform of... cars ? This is the sort of nonsensical inefficiency I expect from first world North America 🙄
