We could not be more grateful to have our batteries tested by TCC! This feedback is incredibly valuable to us. We'd love to provide some context to address the questions that have been raised. This is our first generation of power tool batteries, and we recognize there is room for improvement. We’ve read every comment on this video to gather feedback and learn how we can improve the next iteration of these batteries. To everyone who commented, thank you! Performance Issues: We were aware of these issues, as they were brought to our attention a few months ago. At that time, we halted production and shipping of the batteries. After extensive internal testing, we identified the problem as being related to the PCB. We are currently reworking the PCB to ensure it meets our performance standards. This is not the level of performance we expect from our batteries. The cells themselves are excellent, and without the throttling caused by the PCB, we would have seen much better results. If anyone who purchased one of our power tool batteries would like a refund, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Lipo Comparison: As many comments have pointed out, we won’t outperform lipo-based batteries in this specific test. While our cells are strong, they don’t match the discharge rates of lipo technology. For applications like this one, sticking with a lipo-based battery is likely the best solution for now. Made in America: We misunderstood some of the regulations regarding the "Made in America" designation. Some of our batteries are indeed "Made in America" at our facility in Idaho, while our power tool batteries are "Assembled in America" due to not meeting the threshold of materials being sourced from within the U.S. (we are actively working toward achieving this in future generations). This is why we updated the labeling on our website, and all power tool batteries will be labeled accurately going forward. Looking Ahead: We’re currently redesigning the PCB and performing rigorous testing to ensure our batteries meet our standards before they’re reintroduced on our website. We’re hopeful that TCC will be willing to test the updated version when it’s ready. If you are interested in our batteries, sign up for our email list on our website Titanbatteries.com to hear about their release.

Personally I love the battery talk! a few months ago at my shop, coworker was trying to remove a bolt that was crossthreaded on a crankshaft and his gun wouldn't do it. I told him to give it a shot with my 9 amp hour flex volt, and another coworker just went "what difference does it make? 20 volts is 20 volts" so i told him the cells were a higher discharge rate, which I learned through TTC, and it worked a charm, they both thought I was full of shit lol!
@EETechs
@EETechs Ай бұрын
Higher discharge means the voltage drop of the battery was less. So they are both 20 volts unloaded, but the higher discharge battery can hold that voltage to a higher current draw so your power is greater.

I think it means they just need to market them better. Market them for saws, angle grinders, routers, etc, not impacts. So many tools could use more density rather than draw rates, but impacts are one of the few exceptions to that.

the big issue with the titan is that higher density cells equal less max current output. A 30a 18650 is generaly rated around 2500mah while a 10a will be more like 4000mah. that impact needs high current
@rolandm9750
@rolandm9750 Ай бұрын
Basically any tool needs moar current for more performance so the Titan DW batteries will be a fail in anything save for maybe lights and fans; but in any event not worth the price. If the 2Ah genuine DW is outperforming the 4Ah Titan...that's a bad sign. Titan should be well aware of the current requirements and favourability of cells for power tools, not just jam in whatever to get a higher capacity number when the cells are not appropriate for power tools. There was a recent reddit post where some clueless guy had nearly the same idea..."why can't I rebuild this 5Ah DW and make it into 10Ah! Hurr durr!" lol. That's the kind of thing you'd expect from a clueless Joe that has no idea about batteries, but some commercial company making batteries (and premium price ones at that) should def. know better.
@littlejack59
@littlejack59 Ай бұрын
Honestly, I don't see it as an issue. Just more of a problem with marketing. The people that will use those batteries aren't gonna be throwing them on their impact wrenchs. They will throw them on a lightweight impact driver, a battery draining angle grinder, an endurance killing leaf blower, or something of the sort. I think most people would love to be able to throw something on the size of a 2ah and have it last more than 15 seconds on their angle grinder.

Yep, thats the case even the specs sheet at 9:02, show the max discharge current is 8A of the cell used in the Titan batteries and thats a big problem the normal cells used in DW pack are inr18650-25r with a much higher amp discharge value 20 amps, more than the double, yikes! Even a chep knockoff could beat those titan packs.

It seems like the new DeWalt battery and the 9 amp flex volts are the way to go for top end of their batteries, at least in terms of discharge rate AKA torque. Power stacks seem to be similar to the Titan batteries in that it's geared more towards the energy density side of the equation but still with enough discharge rate for any of their tools. XRs are just good old middle of the road 2650's in a well made package.

11:42 For the record, 18650 cells are no less inherently capable than 21700 (by volume). The issue is that "Titan" decided it would be a good idea to use cells optimized purely for capacity, with absolutely no regard for power output / internal resistance. These are cells you would use in parallel for things like portable power banks. And they went ahead and put them in a single parallel group for use in POWER TOOLS. Real smart there, guys.

The Titan batteries are using cells with higher amp hour than discharge rates, resulting in less punch but longer running times with less load. Reminds me of the Samsung 30Q Cells in 18650 versus the Samsung VTC5 cells. The VTC5 was the best in dumping energy for a good amount of time but the 30Q would go the distance if your not peaking it out. I cant wait until Salt versions of these sized cells get produced...

The titan batteries makes sense somewhat. rechargeable batteries always have a tradeoff between energy density and discharge rate (often measured in C, 1C means you can drain the thing in an hour safely, 2C means you could do it in half an hour. Stuff you might find in quadcopters can be as high as 10-15C sometimes). If the discharge rate isn't there, you can get a lot power, just not enough of it at once to feed the tool. And given that Titan is focused on high energy density batteries, it makes sense that it wouldn't perform well with this BEAST of a tool
@pigletshut

Well if they're here to friendshore power tool batteries, another option is Molicel cells - Taiwanese company with facilities in British Columbia, Canada. I have 5 of their P28As on hand intending to build a 2Ah form factor Dewalt battery with. Those are rated 35A discharge iirc. The shell, for me, could come from China, but Titan can certainly try to arrange to make them in the US. Molicel has since upped the 18650s to 3Ah and has 21700s that do 5Ah at 10C.
@stevemccauley5734
@stevemccauley5734 Ай бұрын
Those batteries make no sense at all. That’s not what the “C” rating means. It is the rate of discharge. The C is a multiple of nominal rated amps a cell can discharge in a burst before being depleted. For instance if a battery is rated 2000 mAh @ 20C, It can produce 40000 mAh or 40 amps for 5 minutes. I haven’t flown RC airplanes in about 8 years but even back then we had 30C rated LiPo cells. I’d hope they’ve come farther than that by now. As the years went by, the C ratings increased as more energy dense cells were being made. That’s my issue with these Titan batteries. If those cells are supposedly energy dense, they’re doing a bad job of it.
@jaywelker5566
@jaywelker5566 Ай бұрын
they make basically 0 sense when you're trying to run power tools off an 8A CDR specced cell though. 20A is the bare minimum for CDR type power tool usage, not borderline useless 20A "burst currents" which conveniently only hold up somewhat because TTC tests are limited to 15s max and a lot of rest periods unlike changing 4-6 wheels on say a semi or heavy diesel truck. About the only things these batteries would do truly decent at is stuff like random orbit sanders. Power draw is low enough not to cause heatdeath in at least the 8.0, and the tool would have much better balance since it's not ~2.2-2.4 lbs like a standard 8.0 Dewalt OEM pack. These packs would fold so bad on angle grinders and circular saws. The 4.0 would shid itself on impact drivers and the 8.0 would also shid itself just on drills, ex: 1007. Cold environments? Going to choke even harder yet.
@stanimir4197
@stanimir4197 Ай бұрын
@@jaywelker5566 pretty much my thoughts 8A discharge is not a serious business. I'd go further and call it irresponsible. 8A would be good for lawnmower and vacuum cleaner robots - but that's it. Even sanders can be rated over 200W (so not ideal, either). I didn't see electronics, yet adding mosfets to limit the discharge current is likely a necessity to prevent catastrophic failures. Edit: the case being made of ABS would also means lower impact resistance too, ABS is UV unstable so don't let them outside either.

Either that or I haven't yet found a car manufacturer that uses accurate lug nut sizes and the slop contributes to the issue. Shame about the Titans, from my perspective. Especially for buyers, who surely bought them because of the FLAG plastered all over them. Like a lot of users I do my best to avoid buying batteries outright, waiting for a sale on a new tool/free batt combo of some kind. Great time of year for that.

I’m not a fan either. Never had a problem with Milwaukee warranty, even without a receipt. DeWalt requires a receipt and I submitted a reciprocating saw (lock pin for the blade wore out) to their repair center 8 days before the 3 year warranty expired (had the receipt) and they denied the warranty. Had to pay almost the cost of a new one.

Awesome video! Really appreciate the battery comparisons as well, it's super useful because it goes to show even if you may not have the immediate cash for the new tabless.. The previous ones still perform damn well! Also, this is one of the first videos where the impact wrench... Doesn't sound like the typical impact wrench 😂 it's like a behemoth when just comparing *sound* profiles (in a good way). Small tip, (YMMV) a small cotton swab dab of Ballistol is what I tend to apply on an anvil or socket to help during times where I suspect it might get stuck. It helps alot as well for smaller impacts where I've had to grab pliers just to remove the damn bit out of the holder (as a more "normal/common" example). In those instances you can of course use less since the it's a smaller surface area 👍🏽

12:12 Hardly curious. Li-ion cell chemistries have a trade off. High capacity and high discharge, pick one. 4000mAh out of a single 18650? Yeah, sure, sounds plausible. Large manufacturers (Panasonic/Sanyo, LG, Samsung) with all their might and R&D expense manufacture 18650's up to around 3400-3600mAh with rated discharge currents of up to 5-8A maybe 10A continuous. I would love if you guys would do a follow up with these batteries, testing the cells individually at different constant currents. Meaning down from 200mA up to 10A or 20A. Comparing to brand name cells like 35E, 25R, HG2, MJ1 etc. If you're not into testing the other cells I mentioned by yourself, maybe talk with the chap behind lygte-info if you could feature their results in your video.

Titan is a great brand, their Airsoft batteries are some of the most durable batteries out there, theyre also pretty high capacity (their 7.4v batteries are pretty dense considering their footprint) But same as here, their Li-Ion cells lack the extra oompfh that Li-Po batteries offer, so theyre not the first option for some fast-cycle airsoft replicas

Yeah, 8A of maximum continuous discharge is NOT enough for a power tool battery. 15A is the minimum but generally 18650 based tool batteries will use 20A cells. Low maximum discharge current has always been the tradeoff with ultra high capacity cells.

I'm really hoping the 961/964 get an in-depth look at the planetary gears and the ring gear to determine what causes the failure, I've tried adding additional grease but that seemed to help much if any. Never was sure why the gears are a thin 2 stage setup when they only use the one stage from what I can tell. The DCF900 has a much bigger/beefier single stage gear that holds up much better overall. Hoping DeWalt can and will resolve this...
