I think it would be really cool to see the “nut busting torque” tested as nut busting torque to aide in the testing. What I mean is actually torque a bolt down to the advertised number and see if it’s able to break it free.

Just a note: The output of an impact wrench....particularly one with large hammers will be much less when there is movement in the measuring device. If you have a load with zero movement like a frozen lug nut it will produce far more torque.

@@hazza2247 I agree, its kinda like when they say a top fuel dragster has 11000 hp. They did not dyno a fuel motor rather it is extrapolated mathematically from lots of data collected during the run. Just because its hard to measure mechanically does not mean that its an unimportant consideration when choosing a tool. To me the big issue with the large hammer lower speed of many electrics is not the power but rather the lack of control when trying to evenly tighten fasteners to say 100 lb ft.

Yes, spot on. With any new category of tools we like to be able to verify results, which is why you haven't seen 3/4" air yet. With this, we just havent run into anything else we can put it against for some useful data comparison. When/if we come up with something bigger for these types of tools and it has a friend to test next to, we'll be able to verify or update these numbers happily.

This with cut the time I spend on the side of the road in half and it only weighs half of my IR pneumatic gun. It seems more powerful than my older one, and it can be set to be really gentle. The drill is more appropriately sized for my use. I used to have a hammer drill, but I did not like that it was so big and it was not a great hammer drill. I rather have a smaller drill like this, and then get a corded hammer drill for the odd case I need that.

Milwaukee doesn't want to pull the bullshit that all these other companies do: which is keep spamming more battery standards to try to beat Milwaukee. Look at how much higher the voltage output is on all these other companies, yet they're only slightly better. Shops buy $10,000s of these tools because they know they can rely on the standards, which is why you usually don't see the other brands in bigger shops: they don't trust them to ruin a standard. What they need to do, like was said, was to have a dual battery setup.

Used to work at a diesel shop where they had some old chain gun style impacts that one of the 45 year diesel mechanics used to rebuild. He claimed back when these were made you couldn't even measure the torque they made accurately. I believe it. Would shatter 3 inch bolts off of giant komatsu cranes that were seized. Nothing could stop these machines.

It's amazing that this tool exceed the limits the dyno. Do you calculate torque from hydraulic pressure only? You exceeded the combined system of faceplate yielding, bolt stretch, and hydraulic support. And hydraulic support, at some point, is probably more related to radial hose stretching / ballooning. I love this channel. Your measurement system is great. I think somehow this tool is abusing the limits of the Dyno setup in nonlinear / multiple ways, which is pretty wild. I told my wife this is what I'm saving up for.

Idea for quantifying performance--calculate the "area under the curve". It's a math/ calculus thing....it would quantify the amount of "work" (i.e. physics terminology for Watts/ amount of energy exerted by the tool). It might help represent the subjective experience of using a tool when peak torque doesn't tell the whole story?

I could have used one of those when I had my car with aluminum wheels. I had those darned two piece lugnuts and they are awful when they are either on too tight or just stuck. They have a metal cap on them which is like sheet metal stamped to that shape. Why Chrysler still used those horrid things even in 1995 is a mystery. It wouldn't surprise me if difficulty removing them was the number one complain with their cars.

The issues we had at work with these 1" impact was 1: the battery is not very secure and has wobbled free. 2: when the tool get hot on a hot day it will go through batteries very quickly.

When you look at tools, you have to remember that it's wattage for power output, and watts are just volts(amps). If you double the volts, you need half the amps to reach the same wattage. This is why you can have 18/20 volt tools that perform identically to 36, 48, or 60 volt tools. As long as the battery cells can provide the amps, and the contacts/wire gauge is beefy enough to handle the amps, the 18 just asks for twice as many and had identical wattage to the 36. This is where Milwaukee is sinking their development budget. Instead of designing multiple platforms, they use the same type of controllers and electronics in all their tools, scale the MOSFETs up and down to hit the right wattage targets, and invest in the development of motors and mechanisms. Li-Ion batteries are capable of dumping 20 amps per cell safely nowadays, so as long as you are willing to pony up cash for the good cells, you can easily build a pack that can dump 100 amps in bursts. At 18 volts, that's over 1800 watts. That's the same power output as a 15 amp 120v plug in tool.

I use my pistol grip 1" gun with the 12Ah battery (secured there with a massive rubber band and zip tie to ensure it doesn't rattle the battery hookup to pieces), and generally I can remove and install the wheels on at LEAST 3 tandem axle trailers with standard 33mm lug nuts between charges. Now of course I torque all my wheels manually so I am not running down the lug nuts until they stop spinning, but I do mostly get all down to about 400-450ftlbs before my final 450ftlb torqueing. I have been kind of heavy use testing it for months with no real noticeable loss in performance.

I've got the extended anvil model and it's only been able to not remove 2 bolts so far, I heated them up though and they both came off. Home Depot for Some reason ( shortly after it came out) had the extended anvil model for only $599.00 while the standard model was $899.00 so that why I choose it . I don't do many wheels but for most things it will fit. I love it and am amazed what a 18volt battery tool can do, rarely need the pneumatic impacts anymore, it is pretty heavy though.

Back in my younger days I worked in a Power Plant and I remember every once in a while we would bring out “Big Bertha”…. a 3” pneumatic impact wrench that we would have to suspend from a hoist. I remember climbing down getting into position to operate the impact wrench and I accidentally hit the trigger with my foot and one of the handles impacted my shin so hard I got a hematoma on my shin.

Hey guys, this is a good looking tool (I don't use it) I'm a diesel mechanic and I would rather use my air drive impact for the big rig tires because if the battery dies or you accidentally forgot to charge it or bring another you got to wait o so long to get it changed but that won't work on the road especially because time is money

I've used a 2inch air impact gun. I wonder what kind of torque those things make.

I wonder how the 1 inch air impacts would stand up to this tool. They look to be a bit cheaper too

The real advantage of this is that you can just grab it out of the truck and start changing 18 wheel tires. As opposed to running and air hose and filling the compressor with air.

@Thrillhunter this is true. But for in a shop it may be easier to move around and worry about the batteries not having enough charge

You'd still need a generator in order to charge the battery
