Sri Lanka is a wonderful place with wonderful people. I was embarrassed about our condition but the guy who helped you made me feel proud again that I'm a Sri Lankan. We don't deserve this crisis. Once the most beloved country in South Asia called the 'pearl in the Indian Ocean'. One of the very few remaining Buddhist nations. Always praised for safety, beauty and hospitality. I hope we'll be able to remain as the wonderful people we've always been, overcome this situation together and rise like a phoenix.

To be fair to the driver, I don’t think he was trying to scam you. Drivers usually offer an exclusive service for foreign visitors and they can act as tour guides when needed. For this kind of service you will pay naturally, recession or no recession. It’s just so unfortunate that Sri Lanka is in this desperate state so drivers need this service job now more than ever. I hope you gave the driver a little extra because he might have been expecting to earn from the service and you suddenly backed out. They need every dollar they can get their hands on and are trying to earn an honest living. Sri Lankans are in a very vulnerable situation right now and they need help. Kudos to the two guys at the restaurant. You embody the true resilient Sri Lankans.

i am amazed by how friendly Sri Lanka's people are even in this harsh situation. thank you Torres for bringing that aspect of sri lanka to us(in a risky night out).
To really understand what that guy did to you, you need to know the context: That Sri Lankan rode a motorcycle. So I assume he is not a wealthy person. And there's an acute fuel shortage in the country. So people tend to save the little fuel they already have by cutting off all unnecessary trips. Still he offered you a ride because he has such a great heart.
Brings tears to my eyes. Even in the hardship, they willingly helping you knowing you a stranger in their land. Wish you Sri Lankan people can get trough this.

I absolutely loved this! As a Sri Lankan, I thank you for doing this and literally portraying the harsh reality. Its not really our fault that the country ended up being this way, and the people you met seem to be lovely. I'm glad they were nice to you:) oh btw Kottu is not Pasta or Carbonara, it's made up of something called godamba rotti. But lol, it a way both are made up of flour, so guess u could call it sri lankan Pasta. If you visit again, let us know:) we'll give u pointers to where u should go. Pretty shocked that movenpick didn't give u hot water! Go to either cinnamon grand, Kingsbury or cinnamon lakeside next time the food is heavenly and so is the stay

I was in Sri Lanka when I was a kid. Time flied. It’s been already 50 years. My Dad has a lot of unforgettable sweet memories there. He is now 87 but still miss Sri Lanka very much. He told me the living stand was low. People there were polite and helpful. One time his car was broken down in country side. Many villagers came to him for help without asking for a penny. That’s unbelievable for a Chinese gentleman. If winter comes, will spring be far away. All the best to you folks. I’ll pray for you.

As a Sri Lankan, I'm glad to have seen that you got the full experience of Sri Lankan hospitality and that you trusted your instinct to venture out during the night, even with the entire un-stable situation. It is sad that many tourists have missed out on this chance to explore our beautiful country which was once filled with tourists, due to the unfortunate crisis that is making every-day life here a hardship. None the less, thank you so much for showing this side of us to the world, especially as a time like this. We hope you visit Sri Lanka again (hopefully once things settle down) and enjoy the same, if not better experience in the future:)

They were always eager to chat, share informations about their country, and in general they were always as nice as one can be.. there was this one guy in particular that worked as a truck driver and would deliver packages to our place.. i'd always offer him something to drink, and (this may sound stereotypical but it actually happened) would always try and teach me the various differences that made Sri Lankan tea better. I wish them the best, especially because i know that many of them either still had family there, or were planning to go back soon.
