Fascinating to see the journey towards bolero! Not only did they develop as artistes, but they changed ice dance completely. Fabulous!

Wow, even at such a young age, they were amazing! They improved a ton though a year later and were unquestionably the best in the world by 1981. But they improved even more from 82 to 84 and became legends. They always leave me in awe.

They look such babies here! It's interesting how much ice dance has changed, back then it was all about maintaining contact, I do believe they were not allowed to be apart for more than 3 seconds, much less emphasis on tricks and lifts than nowadays. My daughter won the Betty Calloway cup at Slough several years ago and had the honour of being presented with the cup by the great lady herself, a proud day indeed!

Heroes and Champions in the making, Torvill & Dean done the UK proud what a difference 4 years made when they won in Sarajevo 4 years later. Even in 2012 they've still got it on Dancing on Ice.

As far as I'm concerned, Torvill and Dean are the best pair EVER! They didn't need a lot of theatrics like the Soviets..natural talent through and through! Rather jealous they were from and represented Great Britain instead of the United States.

I love when skaters can marry all of the elements, though. When technicality and emotion meet, it's beautiful! :)

@carolynglaser6072 жыл бұрын
This goes to show you, the scores don't necessarily reflect the skill of the dancers, it's all political or something. This pair is the best dancing team that ever was, then and now, and should have taken first place.
@russianskatingfan11 жыл бұрын
Oh they became alot more theatrical as the years went on. Dont be fooled by this dance in their youth.

Mesmeric. 5.6's for artistic impression. Really? I suppose they were marked lower in the believe the following couples would do better.
@kamwrites9 жыл бұрын
Here the freedance had to reflect different changes in mood and music...which Bolero did not, it repeated the same theme. So did the rules change between 80 and 84, or did they win by sheer innovative genius?
@nigelianson28119 жыл бұрын
As regards the change of music, that was tradition and nothing in the rules stipulated different music.
@MsRumex3 жыл бұрын
usually champions were allowed to lead the sport and to do something that the rules did not exactly allowed. Moiseeeva and Minenrov even before Bolero did try some one theme FD but the judges did not like it then. However, few years down the road they did like a Bolero and so it went.
@peaceroberts11022 жыл бұрын
The rules stipulated a maximum number of music changes but not a minimum which is why they could do bolero.

And yet it's interesting: the Soviet and Russian pairs have won the competition and often in pairs and dance, but if lost, something I do not remember that someone wrote: "Russian was better, they deserve the gold." I wonder why it is used?
@skatingcritic113 жыл бұрын
Lovely skating, they were far superior to the Soviet couples at this event. I do wish Chris had done the cartwheel at the end instead of Jayne, it would have made for an eyebrow-raising ending.
@lambielkwanfan11 жыл бұрын
I agree Torvill and Dean are probably the best ever ice dance team but dont kid yourselves. At their peak from 82-84 Torvill & Dean were just as theatrical as the Soviets, and that is part of truly great ice dancing anyway. Of course they had superior technical abilities to most of the Soviet greats too, only Klimova & Ponomarenko could compare, and K&P took until their final amateur season or two to truly expand artistically, only once starting to lose to technically weak Duchensays.

The judging of ice dance at these Games was just awful. Wighton & Dowding and Torvill & Dean should have both beaten the Czech pair who was 4th. The Hungarians were totally robbed of the gold which went instead to a stumbling and boring Linichuk & Karpanasov. Moiseev & Minenkov should have beaten L&K in the FD phase atleast as well. Actually the judging of these Games in figure skating was horrible in all events, except maybe pairs which was a boring and mediocre event anyway.

who are the commies? omg.
@fredo107010 жыл бұрын
LOL, they look like 12 year olds. However, that routine was certainly better than the Commies. They electrified the audience, the Commies left the audience flat, even thought the audience was filled with Commies!
@npe17 жыл бұрын
The event was held in Lake Placid, New York, USA so the audience was hardly filled with what you refer to as 'Commies'.
@Mikinaak20233 жыл бұрын
Are you alright? What on earth are commies? Russians or commentators? Weird way of saying either.
