So, what is English identity then? What’s the English unique identity?
@jsworpinАй бұрын
‘Every country has its own unique identity’. Does it? Most of this mythic idea of a shared historical identity that maps to a nation was created wholesale in the 19th century. It wasn’t true then and it isn’t true now. There are some common cultural traits or traditions like drinking tea, liking cricket, being very polite etc. None are universal, many aren’t even practiced by the majority, none are particularly profound or indeed particularly historical. They’re simply current fashions and have changed over time and will continue to do so. The other things that get trotted out like being welcoming, kind, hardworking are just generic human traits that apply to almost all of humanity.

This is where the sophistry and self-delusion of the last half-century has brought us. This Jenrick bloke is twisting himself into a pretzel because he cannot state the obvious: for good or ill, a thing called England exists because it is the land where the English live, as Sweden is the land where the Swedes live and Croatia the land where the Croats live. And, once there are insufficient English, it will be something other. In fact, if we're being honest (as Jenrick is not), we already know the "something other" England will be: "Britain is projected to have a Muslim majority before this century ends" - and, even if the name is retained, it will be no more than a real-estate designation. Tosspotting on about "values" is a way to avoid acknowledging that reality.

There’s a huge difference between English and British. English is an ethnicity. One can see from a person’s DNA that they are English. British means from the British islands / the U.K. My husband did a DNA test and he is ethnically Irish. Up until last century, there was nearly no change to the DNA of the British islands. In 1066, the Norman invasion consisted of about 8000 Normans to a population of about 2 million Saxons. That’s only a 0.5% change to the population. The first refugees to England were of course the Huguenots in the late 1500s. That was only 50, 000 people to a population of 3 million, resulting in a 1,5% change within several decades. Also to note, all these people were Christian. Britain had essentially never been diverse until the immigration of the last 50+ years. Most ethic British people, over 50 today, had never seen a black or brown person until they were teens (unless they travelled or lived in or near a particular area of London). This is how dramatic the change has been!

I think England should have regional devolution, just as Scotland and Wales have devolved leaders. The English regions should have devolved assemblies, or parliaments for London, the South East, South West, Cornwall, West Midlands, East Midlands, North East, North West, and Yorkshire. The English regions could have a 6 month rotation with the region First Ministers as English First Minister. Scotland, and Wales should also have devolved parliaments and assemblies, that are not part of the English devolved regions.

This so called journalist is deluded person who needs to wake up it is every human being right to be proud of their identity. I am not English but I am British, I should not be citizen of this country if I don’t value the original culture of this great country. Those whom came to this country can’t impose their identity on the natives of this nation. We should be honest. The conservative MP has every right to stand for his own right and the people he represents.

England's identity? What about the UK. Casual exchange of English and British again? England has no history or identity outside these islands. There has never been a monarch of English provenance in it's entire history the Tudors, a Welsh dynasty, were probably the greatest. French, Scots, Dutch, and German stand large among them. The English are a melding of many peoples over many centuries.

Im starting to realise that some of those from the upper classes of the South who have a more Norman history are "racist" towards even their Northern English counterparts who are more Viking influenced. Nevermind Windrush, Indian sub-continenet, Middle East etc. some see others outside their very narrow sensibilities as an "out group" and are unwilling to integrate. The reat of us are just fine. FYI im being massively general here.
