I just started playing WW monk just over 2 months ago and I'm 2400, like 240 3v3 games played total. They're strong, just not enough good monks SHOWING everyone else they're strong, so the people on your server think they're weak because they don't see many high ones. Most people are sheep and things don't get popular until someone shows the way first, no one has really done that yet. They're a very strong and versatile class.
