Good review Tyler. Thanks! I'm in the market for an upgraded set (though my four year old Samsung works fine) But as an OTA Dxer I need a sensitive tuner so think I'll pass... I do have the Mediasonic Homeworx tuner and find my Samsung is a hair less sensitive than that tuner, but it's very very close. (I use the Homeworx tuner with my separate outdoor VHF antenna.) Also, The low prices of smart TVs are due in large part to the data collection fees the manufactures make from providing viewer data to outside entities.

I got one of the 50" models during Prime Day 2018. It wasn't too bad, but sometimes the menu would get really laggy and occasionally the picture would get distorted into a green patten. It finally "blew up" last November, suspiciously right before Cyber Monday. I now have two LG 4KTVs about the same size - one of them I've had for two years now - and they've worked a lot better.

@AntennaMan3 жыл бұрын
Keep in mind that this TV does not have a 3.0 tuner built into it. Most do not and there's not really a reason to purchase a 3.0 tuner right now. We are still in the very very early stages of this thing taken off. The current signals won't be shutting down for at least 10-15 years.
@hilaryweiner8933 жыл бұрын
@@AntennaMan This is why I am waiting :-). BTW, I found out by trial and error that my reception issue was because of 5G interference. The LTE filter I had did not screen the low 600 MHz frequencies that were reallocated to cell providers in 2020. I purchased a Silicon Dust filter that goes down to 608 MHz, and problem solved.

I have a TCL 55 in Roku TV that does all those things with the tuner it has a place for you to put a USB flash drive so that you can actually back up pause and fast forward live tv as well plus it has a great Turner on it just as good as my tablo. I can use my voice to change the channels on the tuner as well example "hey Roku put on channel 8.1". The TV has a great picture good sound and with the Roku speakers it's excellent and fast responses on changing channels and apps. Paired with the new Roku voice rechargeable remote it's unbeatable.

During the Amazon computer outage, my new FireTV, a smaller version of the one you reviewed, took 2 minutes to turn on then said not connected to internet then went to the channel guide and showed the channels with each line saying "Programming information unavailable". The OTA channels still worked. None of the apps worked. Apparently everything that comes in over the internet to a Fire TV comes through the Amazon servers. BTW, I had no clue what was going on until I saw what was happening on the news. I thought it was my router. Something to keep in mind for the future. If your Fire devices say no internet, and everything else works. Blame Amazon.

Talk about being a day late and a dollar short. I ordered the 32" model on black Friday. Waiting for delivery today. (I would have used your link had I known) I have a fire stick for my LG that is hooked up to a Fire Recast. I plan to try using this new one with that DVR. This will be replacing a 15 years old Toshiba in my bedroom that is smaller as my eyes are getting dimmer. I'll let you know how it works out with the 2 tuner Recast later.

I received the FireTV this afternoon and it is really nice. But, getting to work the way I want it to was a nightmare. I finally got it to work after a very helpful Amazon Customer Service rep walked me through a maze of settings. So far I can only re-scan the Recast from my FireTV and program the recordings from my Fire Stick. Go figure. At least I can watch recordings from the Recast on either. BTW, the sensitivity of the new TV is a bit better than the old Toshiba with the DVD player. Not unexpected since that is 15 years old.

Tyler, suggestion... There is ZERO information out there about the performance of internal tuners by brand/model/OS, and the quality of the onscreen guide for Ota listings. I just retired an older Toshiba with no guide, but could at least see what's on next while on the channel. Spent hours on forums/reddit and didn't find much of any info. Ended up with a Sony X85j which is great (yay 3.0), but the guide is slow to populate. What I'm saying is... Go buy a couple dozen TVs and test them out! :) Really though, if you have a way to focus on the tuner side of multiple sets, it'd be a huge help.

I had an Insignia Fire TV and while I was watching TV with my antenna, I noticed on the insignia one that every 10, 20, 30 minutes while I’m watching TV with my antenna channels, the screen kept flickering even on the stronger signals and I would blame that on the detachable power cable because on one side, you plug it into the TV in the other side, you plug it into the wall on the Toshiba fire TV. The power cable is attached where are you simply just plug it into the wall and I will power on without having to plug the other side in to the television.

Many thanks for all you do, Tyler. Seems there are 2 main shortcomings of this solution: 1) it can't record and has no up-front user interface to manage my recordings, and 2) the OTA TV signal decoder isn't the best. That's an instant no-go for me. My old Tivo Roamio decodes OTA well, records well, and has a fine UI for live TV, my recordings, and streaming - but HULU is dropping my Tivo model. Is there a solution in 2022 that does all 3, OTA, DVR, and streaming apps superbly, which will last?

De hecho, los sintonizadores externos para ATSC 3.0 siguen siendo un tanto caros (no están obligando a las televisoras de EEUU a integrar aún una señal de ATSC 3.0, ya que el costo del equipo es aún muy caro para ellas).

I reset my two Roku tvs and chose "no network" during initial setup. They're the closest thing you can get to a not-smart tv. It's not a bad tv that way. I use a Firestick connected to an HDMI port for streaming. There is a remote "carrier" which the Firestick's remote fits into, and has enough programmable buttons to control the Roku tv for basic antenna usage. I got tired of Roku pushing out non-optional software updates that weren't tested. They break tvs and don't care. They blame it on the tv maker. The tv maker blames it on Roku (which sounds more realistic since it's Roku pushing it out without customer choice or ability to rollback.). The whole concept of "customer" is messed up with Roku too. You're the "impression" they sell to content providers (who are the customers). Roku's "customer service" is _abysmal_ . It's just "impression management." You're not the customer. Your the product being sold.). I'd like to try a Anroid/chromecast tv (whatever it's called now). TCL's making them (TCL used to be synonymous with BRoku). I don't like Google much (same problem of "customer."). But, last time I looked into it, you could disable updates (and install a prior version if an update broke you). BRoku is the Alec Baldwin of software development. You never know when a bullet has your name on it. The only opt out is to setup without internet, and use the TV as a "dumb tv." Then Broku can't touch you.).

I've personally dislike the Roku and fire TV interfaces they are just poorly thought out and way to slow and buggy for my taste and money. I went with a Nvidia shield pro and wow what a great setup. Fast and efficient with excellent Slingtv and OTA integration as well as being able to add a hard drive to turn it into a OTA DVR.

Interesting I'll look into that Nvidia shield pro. Not cheap is it?

@@villumschroeder1255 No it's 199 but it was worth every penny. It doesn't come with a OTA tuner but it does support USB tuners and hard drives for DVR use.

Hey Ace, Did you buy it online or at a retailer? I'd really like to see a demonstration and compare it side-by-side with the Roku models before I fork over $200...

The problem with these new TVs is they’re more being made for the Internet than what TVs were originally designed for, receiving free over the air TV broadcasts with an antenna. That means they’ve lesson the quality of TV tuners while people get addicted to Pay TV whether it’s Cable Satellite or streaming. Is that their goal, to make people prisoners of Pay TV?

Interesting,all "Toshiba," UHD tv' s are cheap. Even in Europe. I got one,but i have a lot of " problems," because don' t have patience to read manual instruction how to use tv. But it' s perfect,and have HTV and STV ( satellite,) witch i use only. My HTV tuner is super,catches all the tv stations that it should. "My antenna man," when i asked him can i get more channels laught,and sad you catch more than others,so no go.

I had horrible experiences with Samsung TV's and the TCL I bought has been buggy and not that great. I think the Amazon TV will be my next TV, it looks great to me. I prefer Roku over Fire TV but I could adjust easily.

Don't blame the TV. Blame the greedy cooperations that use every opportunity to make more green

As long as you hook it up to an HD antenna then it's good to go! 🙆♀️
