Toshiba PT-862D Reel To Reel Player

I got mine as a gift like 20 years ago, it worked fine for many years (except the source/tape switches made worse and worse contact). I think once the power switch stopped making contact, then one of the erase head wires broke which took me head scratching for a while, then it started slowing down, one of the idler wheels' grease was gummed up. Just the next time I wanted to use it, it didn't move at all - the other idler wheel was frozen solid. Re-lubricated that too and now it basically works fine enough as long as you jiggle the source/tape switches until it plays. I'm rather happy with it except its tensioning mechanism has the tendency to oscillate on 15cm and 12cm reels.

I'm trying to understand what you were trying to fix?? You never stated the exact issue or symptoms your deck is having... I watched the video. The VU meters worked when you turned it On and the reels seem to be turning fine when you initially pressed the Play selector. What were you trying to do, cleaning and lubrication? You obviously adjusted or did something incorrect when re-assembling the motor pulley and made matters worse by messing around back there. The PT-862D is a nice simple 3-head deck and internally looks well designed compared to other "space shuttles" I've seen the insides of.

I’m not sure what yours was doing that needed fixing but mine (same model) seems to have a frozen capstan motor. I noticed you removed the motor and then replaced it. Did the motor spin okay or was that the problem?

Every time I attempted a fix, it always just seemed to get worse. After hours and hours, I had to put it down. Hopefully as my skills improve I can revisit this player. Thanks for commenting!

@@wherecoulditgo4677 No problem, I get that too sometimes lol. Someone else most likely was in it before you got it and there's no telling what they could have done. The best thing to do is to go and try to find and download the service manual and go from there
