Exactly, the rate of EV fires are far less than petrol car fires which are the most numerous in the world. If you look at the relative percentage of fires it's about 10-20x less than a conventional petrol car to catch fire. So if you've only seen 3 petrol cars on fire in your life of 68 years, you can bet most people will never see an EV on fire in real life in our lives. It's just hyped up in the media because they are new and unfortunately, when they do go on fire, it's far worse than a petrol car on fire. Personally, I've never seen any car on fire in real life for my entire life yet either but I'm only half your age.

I guess one way to stop Chinese EV's in foreign countries is to pass laws holding the EV manufacturers libel for any fire damage caused by their products. If a building burns down the manufacturer must pay for all cost associated with the fire. They must also have a warning to potential buyers of the possibility of spontaneous combustion fires from the car. Insurance companies should price their insurance rates according to that risk.

The reason that EV fires make headlines, is because they are extremely dangerous, a normal car fire is also a very dangerous incident, however fire brigade can douse a car fire quickly, once doused and the fuel removed, the car is effectively inert and no longer a danger. EV's however.. are impossible to 'douse', release vast toxic clouds of smoke, can create explosions and 'jets' of flame at extreme temperatures... and the battery packs can re-ignite days, weeks or even months later. Making the transport and disposal of the EV hazardous long after the initial incident. Insuring these things will eventually become impossible.

Teslas do catch fire, however it takes an accident or an unofficial charger that the computer doesn’t work with. They rarely spontaneously combust. Chinese EVs cheap out on the engineering and computing that prevents this.

I mean, I get the sentiment that BYD or other Chinese Manufacturers are making piss poor quality cars that catch fires now, but through this, they are actually collecting very useful data (at the expense of human lives and inconvenience) about batteries that other countries with stricter laws and regulations can dare to collect. With the rate of how many EVs catching fires in China, they might be the number 1 country that has enough data to use for developing solutions for putting EV fires out. Again, incredibly stupid, and inefficient, not to mention dangerous, but these events will eventually help China, if they can learn something from them.

Based on the number of car fires in the US and scaling for the larger number of cars in China there are likely to have about 500 a day. Of these, according to the video, 8 are EVs. The problem is not too many EV fires, less would be good, but fire fighters need to be trained to deal with them. Dry Chemical and foam are not useful in putting out a battery fire. The way to extinguish the battery is to cool down the cells inside it below ignition temperature. This does not happen by spraying the sealed battery with water. It is like spraying water on the outside of burning barrel. All you do is make steam. There are devices that fire fighters push under the car. They have a spike that punctures the battery so water can be injected in with the cells and cool them down. There are also blankets that can be placed over the car to deprive the fire of oxygen.

Some cars have a hole, which will open in the fire (fire will destroy that thinner part sooner) and firefighter puts the house in it, filling the inside of the battery pack with water. I see you talked about the spike for batteries without that option. In general, the point of cooling down is to stop the thermal runaway, when burning cell is heating up surrounding cells above critical temp.

Batteries do not power the car. They simply store the energy that powers the car. Batteries are an additional layer of technology and cost in EVs. And they are an additional layer of resources that must be mined, like lithium, cobalt and nickel. These cars are not "green" at all. They are much worse for the environment than gasoline-powered cars.
