Instead of rotating the thumb down (at 2:45 of this video) by 5 degrees, how about rotating the pinky inward by that much? That way seems to anchor the elbow a bit firmer and point it upward too when bending. Would that hurt the shoulder given time?

It looks like the Shinji way just requires opening the armpit more.
