Amber and Achara watch Total Recall starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sharon Stone for the very first time! How does this classic hold up in 2022? The film is directed by Paul Verhoeven and is based off of a short story by Philip K. Dick. What other movies should we check out?

The great thing about Sci fi movies from back in the 80s and 70s is that most of those "gross" alien like scenes were physically created compared to the hyper advanced cgi today. But even though they didn't make them using superior tech back then, its far more engaging and visceral compared to what they produce nowadays. Somehow our human brains don't seem to "accept" fake / computer generated material but we do react very emphatically to physical effects.

I am really glad that you remembered when the technician talked about a blue sky on Mars. That was one thing I noticed too, when I first watched it. ALSO, there was a hard cut, between when things were normal, and when things went crazy. The problems started at the reception desk. We never saw what actually went wrong, initially. It's open to interpretation, but the technician's statement was curious. What a coincidence. 🙂

YES!!! THIS IS AN EPIC SCI-FI ACTION ADVENTURE FILM! Before Schwarzenegger was cast, Matthew Broderick, Richard Dreyfuss, James Caan, Patrick Swayze, Christopher Reeve and Richard Gere were considered for the lead. The film was the only movie to win Best Visual Effects at the 1991 Academy Awards. The film is the last Hollywood movie to have in camera special effects shots, which consists of Miniatures, Matte paintings, blue screen and rear screen projection. The film was a box office success making $270 million dollars against a $90 million dollar budget, making is the most expensive independent film produced. David Cronenberg was going to direct the film, but had a falling out with Dino De Laurentiis and production was cancelled until the script was on picked up by Carolco.

Evidence that what's happening to him is fake: - The description of what is to happen on his Ego Trip is exactly correct. - The woman they select to put into his Ego Trip looks exactly like Melina. - The title of his Ego Trip is "Blue Skies on Mars", and the image on the operator console looks like the reactor cavern and heating elements he encounters later. - For a professional agent, his wife's shooting at short rage is awful, as is the performance of the first agents to try and pick him up after his visit to Rekall. - His length of survival unprotected in the Mars atmosphere is absurd. Evidence that what's happening to him is real: - He dreams of Melina before he ever went to Rekall. - There is some sense before he goes to Rekall that he's being watched. - (the biggest one) There are scenes in the movie that don't include him, such as Cohagen upbraiding Richter for screwing things up.

This movie has some of the best Arnold Schwarzenegger noises ever!🤣🤣 Also Achara my have actually changed my mind on how this movie really ends. For a long time I believed that it really was a dream, both from how it ends with the bright light at the end and then how ridiculously over the top the violence is. But then Achara (the eagle eye that she is) points out how everyone around Arnold is very sus around him before he even goes to Recall.

"Blue Sky On Mars" was the fictional program/story for his ego trip that then became true in a few days on the actual Mars - you'd say that would be improbable. However, Cohaagen had prepared things on Earth for Hauser as the Quaid persona to play out so he would be chased to Mars, believed by Melina and Kuato, leading him to Kuato. The question is was Recall a part of his plan and given the "Blue Sky On Mars" program for Quaid to get - just not as early as what occurred. Cohaagen wanted this all to occur after a little more time for him to set things up, but you see him "recalculate" the plan when informed that Quaid was on the run. Kuato was psychic and the extent of his abilities were not known. Cohaagen's previous attempts were thwarted, so he decided not to inform anyone else yet and then only when they needed to know to limit the chances that Kuato would psychically find out any part of the scheme. When things started happening earlier than planned, you got agents really trying to kiil him because they were not informed; and also Richter was a little out-of-control. Then again it could all be impanted memories. He only thinks he dreamed of Melina and Mars before going to Recall.

Is what is happening to Quaid just a fantasy taking place in his head while he is strapped in a chair at Rekall? I was long resistant to the idea myself. But over the years, I've become persuaded that this is almost certainly the case. Even so, the film is sufficiently ambiguous that people can argue back-and-forth about it and never resolve the question absolutely.

Since there are many scenes in the film where Quaid is not even present, the events must be real. If everything were only a memory implant, nothing should take place of which he can have no knowledge. But we see again and again e.g. conversations between Richter and Cohaagen etc.

The only logical explanation for the viewer being able to see more than Quaid is that the events actually took place.

It's great to see two reviewers who "get it". "What makes reality real" was one of Philip K Dick's recurring themes, along with "what makes human human", and "what makes you you", as seen in "Blade Runner", "Screamers", and "Impostor". "Paycheck" is interesting as it was based on a very early work by Dick, before he settled on his recurring themes, and should also be worth a look too.

There was another subject you touched upon during the discussion, and regarding that I would like to recommend the 2009 film "Moon", as well. Other movies based on his novels, aside from "Blade Runner" ("Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" as you already know), are "Minority Report", "Screamers" (directed by Christian Duguay, with Peter Weller -Robocop-) or "The Adjustment Bureau" (with Matt Damon and Emily Blunt). "The Matrix" is actually based on (ripped-off) the comic series "The Invisibles" (by Grant Morrison). This is cool to see younger generations of folks enjoying what I did when I was significantly younger. Interesting to think of how close to future concepts. The taxi driver, for example, is something I could see happening. During Covid's most intense times, people learned how psychologically difficult it was to receive healthcare from masked, faceless careproviders. When people made some masks clear, or put a picture of themselves on their garments, people felt significantly more at ease when dealing with nurses and doctors. So it is likely that in additional to the automated, driverless cars we currently are developing it is likely we will have a humanoid robot character aided by AI computer programs replacing the driver in our taxis and Uber like services. Anyway, loved your guys review and reaction. Curious to see what other movies you haven't seen which I'd likely take for granted that you must have: American Psycho, Pan's Labyrinth, Full Metal Jacket, Apocalypse Now, Fargo, Spaceballs, the Mad Max movies, Saw films, Dusk til Dawn, Tombstone, etc. Looking forward to it!

The automated taxi cab driver was voice acted by Robert Picardo. Picardo also played the emergency doctor hologram in Star Trek: Voyager throughout the entire series run - the same character also has a cameo in Star Trek 8: First Contact.

Also the concept of future healthcare givers being automated AI driven robots is completely believable - given much of the fear surrounding COVID was that continuous exposure would lead to a complete collapse of the healthcare system through exposing all of the doctors/nurses/janitorial staff to the virus and compromising them it stands to reason that in the event of a future pandemic a resource of artificial caregivers would be vital to maintaining a stable service. Also it opens the possibilities for the elderly to have caregivers that can offer both limited companionship and medical help in the event of an emergency, not to mention helping those with dementia to remain comfortable in their own home rather than needing to be left in a group home for the elderly.

Glass can block much of the radiation. In the movie "Oppenheimer", one scientist witnessing the first atomic bomb explosion simply sits in his car, indicating to his fellows that the front window will give him enough protection. Also glass can be treated to be even more effective. The bigger problem seems to be that if the glass is compromised in any way, the pressure difference with the outside can be deadly. This can be seen as the corporations setting up the place cutting costs.

The early "cheap" domes did not provide adequate protection against the hazards to humans, and thus you got mutants. That was at the "old town" facilities. The new facilities have newer (and more expensive) protection that takes care of everything(think atomic/radiation facility translucent panes - not only one layer of regular glass). The more unrealistic aspect is that security forces have weapons that can rather easily penatrate the materials used between the habitation space and the atmosphere of Mars. The current strategy for a facility on Mars is to build it in a lava tube with the Mars ground providing some of the protection(they did have a lot of stuff in tunnels). You have to admit they got a lot of things correct considering it was made in the late 1980's - with only the Viking landers and before Pathfinder(1997) and the other probes including orbiters that have mapped Mars surface and sub-surface. Also, in a fast-paced action movie you can have a few things purposely unrealistic such as the interactive video call from Mars to Earth without any noticable lag/time-delay("speed of light" transmission - not quantum communication). Leave that for "The Martian" or "2001: A Space Oddessy" kind of movie to portray.

Th Scene when he pulled the tracker out of his nose was achieved with a fake head moulded from a life cast of Arnold's face. it was either an animatronic or animated i forgot.

Achara it's funny because Arnie did a movie in 2000 where he was a clone called the Sixth Day. You should check it out.

You know? This is the first react video I ever watched with interesting post-comments... and I follow many react youtubers. You have made a good selection with this guest. Please, invite Amber more to watch others sci-fi movies, because she make really interesting comments. Maybe you can both watch Contact (1997), Mission to Mars (2000), Red Planet (2000), Wall-E (2008), Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), Gravity (2013), Galaxy Quest (1999), Ad Astra (2019), Apollo 13 (1995), The Thing (1982), and let her give their opinion from science point of view.
