Total War: Rome 2 - Champion Duel (Long Fighting Animations)

One of the longest and more intense 1 on 1 duel I have seen on this game with some pretty long animations.
The mod used for the hero units is monoolho's Hero Unit Packs (for custom battle).

I'm impressed. The swordplay is actually pretty realistic by video game standards. And it still manages to make it look intense and exciting.

I love how far this series has come in terms of animations. Hope it develops further in that regard. This is not yet QUITE like watching two actual people fight, but it's getting there. They even give the impression that they're tired towards the end, when they drop the combos and just start stabbing each other's shields repeatedly. Of course, it seems like cinematic fighting techniques take priority here over realism, but still- that can always be adressed in future titles. The overall quality of this 1 on 1 fight- given that this is a game that potentially involves thousands of soldiers like these two fighting on the battlefield- is amazing.

@@terrypennington2519 The problem with shogun is that everyone waits for their turn in combat, 2 fight and the others just stand and wait. But yeah, the fighting animations looked great.

@@rafox66 Yeah I honestly understand why they went in the direction of reducing the animations in favor of just swinging and basic stuff. It cuts down on processing power, makes the general flow of combat quicker, it's easier for the developers to make all the models work, and yep, as you pointed out, the models don't wait their turns to get locked in their 1 on 1 animations to fight. I've seen that happen constantly on Shogun 2, where 2 samurai are chasing a retreating samurai, and because he keeps turning around and running back, the animation would unlock, but then lock itself again, just for them to swing at eachother and block eachothers hit, and the cycle repeats.

I think with the new Blood and Gore DLC they added in the chance for an enemy to get decapitated. I think they might have also added in some dismemberment as well I think I remember seeing a video were an enemy got their arm cut off. Not completely sure though so don't quote me on that.

pretty well done, my only complaint is that there's quite a lot of parrying rather than actual blocking with the shield which is not accurate to the fighting styles of the time period, but overall looks great.

I'm really glad most of the critics here didn't have a say in making this game or the animations. Putting to one side that Creative Assembly have to try and respect the historical knowledge we have of the time in question (an arguement in itself as to whether they achieved that) when creating the game, they are (primarily) making a piece of entertainment. OF COURSE if it were completely accurate the fight would be over quicker than a bullet leaves a gun! However, it wouldn't be particularly exciting and would detract from the entertaining experience of a game that depicts epic historical battles. Remember guys, it's a game. For the most part its something to enjoy. I love ancient history and historical warfare but when I watch this I know I'm watching it for the fun. Not the historical military accuracy of one on one combat (which a can I point out would rarely happened back then anyway).

Thanks! It is a shame, but the game used to be entirely just fighting animations and a lot of people complained about it because it ruined formations and such. So CA had to patch the game so that the classic "random stabs" system from the first Rome would be implemented to prevent formations from dissolving. There still is a good chunk of fighting animations happening though, you just have to do a little bit more observing than before.

Actually these 1v1 battles aren't that common in the real game either. This was more like gladiator combat. Sometimes you see individual units get in minor scuffles but nothing so lengthy or intricate. The game stays true to history for the most part. Ancient battles were big pushing matches.

These are from a mods, Creative Assembly hasn't released any single man heroes and I don't think they ever will. They may not be showing up for you because technically this mod is outdated.
