Yes there are many great roman emperors. Emperor Augustus was the first and expanded a lot of land. Constantine secured victory for the romans and the Christians. Julian did the same but for roman paganism Augustus is probably the best overall but for e.g. Your greatness meter depends on the policy you like of the emperors. I prefer Julian as he tried to restore roman Paganism and the empire to it's former glory. But Christians might like Constantine as he was a saint and made Christainity flourished

As a streamlined roman history guy (Basically super dumb history study person) I prefer emperors who did so much in their small time. Anyways, as said. Christians might not like Marcus Aurelius, it's not confirmed. But there were increasing Christians punishments in his time. Also Augustus also delivered peace, along most of the roman border. But still never the less expanded until the fated battle of tettosburg

One of the things I love about Roman history is how surreal it is. The Empire with all of its bizarre culture is so disconnected from modern Europe and humanity that its hard to imagine it ever existed at all, especially for as long as it did, and as influential as it was. The fact that these figures really did exist, and did so much as they did, and were supported by tens of thousands of men who fought with shortswords and shields across an entire continent, and all so far ago in the past, is absolutely bizarre and surreal.

@nickcaesar58336 жыл бұрын
Tory it would have continued to go through the same silly cycles of republic nonsense and random dictators. Augustus was the only one with the conditions to become Emporer. I don't think another Julius Caesar would have happened. The cycle would have probably ended with a invasion of the gauls with the Senate not in a position to fight due to them only caring about themselves. Probably around 100 AD. Even though there were a few crazy emperors I think having that system was the only way the empire could survive over 1,000 years if you add in Constantinople its even more evidence.
@grisharotov97353 жыл бұрын
It would either have been split up between generals with loyal troops(basically carving out their own domains), collapse from the inside due to the incompetence and (uncontrolled)corruption of the oligarchs in The Senate or as stated in the previous comment a barbarian invasion would finish it of in its weakened state. What both Caesar and Augustus understood is that the "Republic" already was a de facto "Empire" in all but name, since it really was the administrative machine that truly ran the State(regardless what it was called), but for it to run as smooth as possible it was better if there was one official leader, a "First Citizen" as Augustus himself preferred to call himself. It was a necessary change to keep it together and bring stability, and even with a few bad emperors the fact that the Roman Empire lasted for as long as it did proves it...and it also proves that the majority of the emperors where actually good rulers and statesmen.

@zaakk110 жыл бұрын
1337billybob But kid , Octavian is bright, Julius Caesar said this: I see it as a potential I've ever seen anywhere else, it's brighter than me. Agrippa is the best friend of Octavian, you think Antony is a general of his battles? Do you think that Lepidus is the General in battles? Octavius was the campaign with Caesar. The truth is that Octavius is the best.
@1337billybob10 жыл бұрын
Vinni Galhardo In future refrain from starting your statement with a dismissive phrase, like 'but kid' otherwise I feel like you are actively undermining the discussion. Julius Caesar did greater things than Octavius to reach power, and was more magnanimous, though that magnanimity left him open to assassination. Octavius would have lost if it wasn't for Agrippa, Octavius had a cowardly reputation (perhaps due to his ill health) but Agrippa was the one to lead his armies and win. Octavius was a great politician and won the hearts of the people while turning them against Anthony.
@zaakk110 жыл бұрын
Sorry for '' the kid '' is a way for me to talk, is not to humiliate you. Okay if not for the Agrppa, would have been another, the question is what Agrippa is the best friend of Octavian, it is the closest person, if he thought good for leading the army did right. More coward he was not, you're using words that Antony had no grounds at all FOUGHT with Octavius Caesar in Gaul, Caesar would think you put all your trust in a coward? You look at the achievements of Octavian. Antony was a more powerful blind man by his ambition and his arrogance and ended up in the deep end, and Octavian faced Rome Antony and Egypt because of Cleopatra.

I still hate the fact that they called Caesar "SEE-ZER". It is KAI-SAR for anybody who stumbles upon this comment.

Yes vulgar latin
@drabbit45943 жыл бұрын
Just to clarify, since it apparently annoyed you and you felt the need to "correct" it The pronunciation used is the correct English pronunciation, it is not "Kai-sar" in English In reconstructed classical Latin, it's pronounced "Yulius Kaiser" - but the game is using the English names, not the classical Latin names Otherwise Mark Antony would be "Marcus Antonius" - but once again, the English variant of his name was used, because this version of the game is in English Regardless "Julius Kaiser" is flat out incorrect, it's either "Yulius (or Iulius) Kaiser" or "Julius Seezar" - you're either pronouncing it in reconstructed classical Latin or English, you pick one you don't mix them So for anybody who stumbles across this comment, OP is largely incorrect - the pronunciation used in the game is the correct English pronunciation

Why did they make Augustus look like he hails from the barbarian tribes to the north? Augustus had blood relation to the Julii family, his hair was probably brown along with his eyes, like his great grandson Caligula's. When I first saw Augustus in this game I was just waiting for him to burst into Nazi salute screaming heil Caesar! He looks ridiculous.
@Antriger6 жыл бұрын
Yah that is pretty stupid, but he was actually often portrayed as having blonde hair as it was seen to be a fair trait. - Still stupid though. He was also always portrayed young. Look at the Primaporta Statue ;) As for Galigula, he wasn't actually Augustus' great grandson by blood so you cannot draw the conclusion that they would look alike :)
@jl90626 жыл бұрын
Wrong. Suetonius states that he had curled hair, inclining to a yellow color. Therefore, he was blond.

I'm not one for realism, but the thing that most made this game fun was the idea to make it modible in the steam workshop

Why did they Change from "Rome must have a emperor" to "Rome must have a master" in the game?
@Antriger6 жыл бұрын
Because the term "emperor" stems from "Imperator" meaning, one who enacts Imperium, and imperium is where you have power, hence Imperium Romanum. At this day and age Imperator was an honerary title given by soldiers to their leaders. Augustus' real title was Princeps Civitatis, or First citizen of Rome. This is because, the Roman people Augustus really wanted to pretent that they still were a republic (and in some ways they were until emperor Tiberius). This part of the empire's history we call "the princepate" because it is a more flat imperial structure. The next period, which comes after the Third Century crisis, as called "the dominate" where you get the classical idea of an emperor in his purpur robes and a true autocrat. The word princeps has actually given way for the word prince, which has two meanings. A prince is either a son of a monarch or a ruler. Hence the King of Spain is also the prince of Spain. By this logic the prince of USA would be Donald Trump for example. The idea that Rome needed a leader to sort things out originated in Cicero's work, where he mentions the idea of a Rector, which pretty much was what Augustus became The role of the princeps, the "master" was to keep the Mos Majorum alive, the "ancient customs" of Rome, by controlling the three seperations of power, these being; the economic power, the legislative power, and the executive power. The Empire never had a constitution so the "master role" simply had to appear out of a political reality. Because of this, and because of the other facts made, Augustus could not call him anything particular. He had to hold the reigns without looking like he did so. - Hence why it is more proper to call him "Master of Rome" instead of "Emperor of Rome." The modern word Emperor comes from the french version of this. Why they used it I cannot say. France and Italy had a thing with taking old latin words and make them words for nobility. Dux (Duke) means leader. Comte (Count) is the emperors "comrades". Roy "Rex" (King), Baro (Baron) - no one knows that one. Paladin comes from Palatine and prince from princeps. A fun fact. The reason why Mussolini was called il'duce, is because this in italian means leader.

eckabacken9 then you might have played with your eyes closed, i first bought the game in patch 13 but i know how filled with bugs it was. you could not have played a single campaign without finding bugs and specialy not sea battle as that have first been fixed in patch 15
@Erikaaaaaaaaaaaaa10 жыл бұрын
Daniel_Meicker it pre-ordered it and played the day it was released and still haven't found a single bug
@Theeternalziggy10 жыл бұрын
well either your game came out with patch 15 or you must be blind, first of all naval battles have never been working as they should before patch 15, ships got stuck sometimes after a ram and so on. ai's didn't care about siege ladders they just torched the gate (and if you say that never happened to you then you're lying as the ai WAS broken and did not do what they should) even sometimes the ai would just sit outside your castle and just watch while the timer ticked down, this even happened in patch 13. there is NO way you couldn't have had a single bug no way
@Erikaaaaaaaaaaaaa10 жыл бұрын
