One thing I've found extremely important in Shogun 2 is to zoom in all the way A LOT. This really showed it here, but most people stay in a more "tactical view" top-down. When you zoom in you can really see the terrain bump. Sometimes I use matchlocks and I never understood why very few men were hit. When I zoomed in, I realized they were shooting into a hill.

Well the key is to avoid direct hits. You can easily drain all their ammo without even sacrificing a single unit if you do it right. The Koku exchange then is in your favour.

I was playing a siege battle against a guy earlier who basically spammed the Red Bear unit, along with 2 units of spear kachi and 1 katana kachi as well as his general. I spread my units out his fort to begin with but when I moved my archers within range I noticed his units weren't firing back because I had unintentionally placed my archers below a hill. I lost about 6 archers but killed 180 of his men before he quit!
@nilloc9311 жыл бұрын
yes, for FOTS i would recommend bringing naginata attendants (rise of the samurai DLC) or Yari samurai like the author suggested. A thing to note with FOTS is their Shogitai (no dachi) are the BEST MELEE INFANTRY IN THE GAME, if you see them don't try and melee them, hit them with cavalry and bow units. Also FOTS units do not usually have armor so ranged weapons are devastating if you use them right. Terrain is also the FOTS weakness, small hillls and the sort will ruin them.

@speakdino1012 жыл бұрын
The whole point of the hill is that the screen won't take a lot of fire, which means they won't route and will tie up the matchlocks. On flat land, you might have to completely rework the strategy.

pretty good video man! extremely helpful at this point i am thinking the best way for a matchlock camper to win. put all of the matchlock units and rockets on a mountain along with some yari units?
@MonsieurTimuel12 жыл бұрын
The reason bow ashigaru seem to have more ammo than monks is because monks shoot faster, thus depleting ammo quicker, they should all have the same amount of arrows

When you ran in with your yari samurai screen and engaged the 3 matchlock-monk units, did you charge them properly, or did you run your samurai in the monks' general direction(s) and they happened to collide?
@TheNighthawk0013 жыл бұрын
-The other mistake you made was not protecting your archers with your yari samurai. this could have been done had you not send all your spears to take one structure. For the rest I think you played very well. Other approaches were of course possible like swinging your cav behind his lines using the trees as cover (you don't really need to march through the forrest, you just need to keep trees behind your cav and his matchlocks). Maybe a multipronged attack would have worked?

Dude what do you think about Bow Samurai vs. Bow Ashigaru? I know most players fav Bow Warrior Monks or Daikyu samurai (who i find quite deadly). I use one Bow Ashigaru + one Bow Samurai - incase they get rushed I find the bow sam stand up ok to other melee units

Anticav? I usually use cav against fire rockets. I let them shoot and then just dogde their missiles. I dont know if it got patched after the video was out, but i allways found fire rockets landing in my infantry was way more deadly then in cav, since i just microed them out so they dealt little to no damage, whyle with a fire rocket vs inf you could get 200+ kills with ease.

When I read the title of the video I was thinking how your opponent would play? I was thinking he would either bring archers to defend against yours but that would make his army weaker or he would be very aggressive but being very aggressive with only matchlock units seems quite difficult. I liked your idea of launching the attack when he was on the move. Very smart. I think you played well but I did notice 2 mistakes: -3 yari samurai for taking 1 structure. You should have send 1 or 2 (+ cav)
@RahulDevanarayanan12 жыл бұрын

@fishsandwichpatrol I think some people hack the game i really do. Ive beaten good players when they had 5 lv 9 matchlock vets, but the other day in a 2v2 the guy had ONE vanillia matchlock ASHIGARU, and as soon as he opened fire, my partner's army routed. the thing is no casualties were created at all, he was in a forest, and the matchlock guy's general died like 10 minutes before he opened fire. Same thing happened on my side. It makes no sence what so ever! We killed 70% of there army!!!!
@rsetha0113 жыл бұрын

I still play vinilla and have no problem killing expansion players, the bows out range them and can out skirmish and if its a map that has woods i can hide my samari and lay the down the hurt then they least expect it; those things destroy moral if there able to get more then 2-3 volleys off before you can get on them, if you can negate that it becomes easy

@Limrasson9 жыл бұрын
So, the best way to coutner matchlocks is to to use the terrain and skirmish with bow ashigaru set on loose formation. If they are veterans, then I guess morale, range accuracy and relaod skill are neat for them (or move speed if available). Perhaps use some mounted archers so you can flank a little or skirmish better if enemy army has a better composition? Then use some thorwaway units, some cavalary backed up by bulletproof samurai for isntance? Honestly I prefer quality over quantity, but whenever enemy has guns, it's my bane of existence.

Just read through the comments, and I couldn't help but laugh at all the people you've upset. It was painfully obvious that your opponent was married to that copse of trees there (camping). You were the only one being proactive in skirmishing, capping and screening a charge (not camping). Can't believe there's even a debate about this.

I remember a hotseat I played where me & my friend slaughtered over 8000 enemies with only 1500 guys of our own. Are you seriously using kill ratios as a measure of skill? The title speaks for itself- defeating matchlock campers. Good players don't camp' neither do most good Shogun2 players keep more than 2 Matchlock warrior monks in their army. Most clans have home rules for them too.
