In my Date playthrough my alliance with Oda lasted a long tine (not sure how many turns) to few turns after realm divide. But I suspect it was so because we had different enemies and did not share borders.

Had to come back and watch this video after seeing one of your more recent Total War: Warhammer vids, and I gotta say, I MISS when unit AI was this good. The way Cavalry actually move back and forth through fleeing units to actually finish them off is a far-cry from how sluggish the units are in Warhammer TW. Maybe I'm just imagining things, but I feel like the units in the older TW just performed better than they do in modern TW games.

The enemy AI was so much better in the earliest games. Rome, Med, and Shogun. The battle AI was straight up human like. If you’re not good at the game, the battle AI will play better than you.

I agree with the graphics thing. In my opinion Shogun 2 is the best looking total war in terms of graphics and for me it runs best, I can play on max settings or pretty much whereas Atilla I can barely do high and the graphics are worse. It's frustrating

Dr Wonkenstein Yeah, for some reason, this game always looked awesome to me. I don't know about Attila but when i loaded Rome II, i kept thinking why the hell did they go so overboard when it is hugely taxing and i can't see anything that much above Shogun II.

Dr Wonkenstein This game is just far better in general. They totally nailed the overall style and aesthetic, even to the point where the homogeny of units didn't matter all that much. It's also the best use of the current engine. Rome II has come a long way for sure, but I still always end up auto-resolving the bulk of battles. It just isn't as fun or as well-paced, despite what has the potential to be a more interesting setting.

But you can still do better planning for realm divide. If you play it out right then you can prepare your defenses for the storm and trigger RD (or simply just take kyoto before it happens) when you're ready for it and actualy prevail. Buuut if you trigger it befoe that well yeah you're kind of screwed :P

Raymond Benjamins It happens either after you take Kyoto and become shogun or when your Clan reputation reaches levels that the shogunate consider you a threat. What will happen is that most clans (if not all of them) will line up and declare war on you, even your long time allies may turn after a while (though you can slow that down by building massively +relation with them, through marriage and such). It can seem really backbraking dealing with it, but it's also one aspect of the game I love. It keeps being challengeing to the very end. It doesnt cut you any slack and it will kickj your ass. But in the end, when you beat the game, damn does it feel good. Playing 40+ games in Civ5 I haven't given even half the satisfaction I felt when I beat the Shogun 2 campaign for the first time.

You defintely dont want to put generals in towns for any length of time in this game, they can get the "womanizer" line of traits, it decreases campaign movement range. Also, yari wall for yari ashigaru is OP.

Two thumbs up. After two campaigns one from the east and one from the west I appreciate how hard this game is. That first battle. After loosing two generals to one Yari cavalry myself. Your Daimyo got away with it by the skin of his balls. Riveting battle. One other thing I really like is the notes and sayings on the load screen from Sun Tzu and death poems and other philosophers of the time. Thanks for doing this four years ago and keep doing what you love.

Hey Legend, just a tip from my experience, early on and when you are fighting predominantly tari ashigaru, your generals bodyguard is pretty amazing if you dismount them and just use them as a sword unit.

If ever there was a Shogun 2 faction that is just perfect for you Legend, it's the Takeda. Awesome cavalry and Takeda Shingen has the Fear (Dread) trait automatically. Looking forward to you stacking up the charge bonus retainers and skills and kerb-stomping every mo-fo on the map with the most awesome Horse Sandwiches (tm). :)

Praetorian1995 I know this is 3 years ago but Shogun 2 has been the pinnacle of aesthetic, feel and gameplay for me. My #1 Total war above even medieval 2, and there hasnt been a total war since (nor does there look to be with that arcadey warhammer poisoned three kingdoms china game coming out). I think this will be the last real total war for the old school total war fanbase

wanadeena It's more difficult. The AI is smarter. There is a lot less content in Shogun 2. No crusades. No mercenaries. Limited build slots. No population. Less general traits and stats. Small campaign map. Naval battles suck.

wanadeena I just picked it up this weekend and at the start, it is really hard to get into. But the thing I noticed on my easy campaign (just trying out, I'll pick a harder difficulty later), that there were a lot of settlements undefended. Just the garrison unit of of samurai retainers. But as I said, at the start you probably will have a hard time figuring stuff out and finding out what to recruit and when to attack.

technically spear would win the katakana. You simply can't cut through that body armor with Katakana, the spear is used to do more blunt damage and have way better reach.

I know this is quite late in time and such, commentating on something rather old like this but I was wondering if you could briefly explain how the combat mechanics are different in shogun 2 as opposed to the other TW's? Good job. You are very strategic with the combat. I have one comment though but not about you Legend, in the beginning of the video with the Samurai duel. I would consider having my samurai shot in the back after winning a duel to be dishonorable and childish. That's just my opinion on that scene.

The Ikko Ikki monks didn't abide by Bushido because Bushido was followed by the samurai caste who were considered first class Citizens during the time. Ikko Ikki members were peasants and farmers who had their lives run by Samurai and their lords, they were abused, theirloved ones raped and were constantly being exploited. Many starved because the rice quota was too high and they couldn't supply enough so the samurai took it all and left them to die hungry. Ikko Ikki believed in Equality of all people from what i remember If i were them I would shoot samurai in the back too.

Is it OK to take money for military accss agreements like this guy does? I'm trying the Takeda at this level without doing that and I have to be iuncredibly carefull with money and take things much slower - until I get stomped of course. Mind you I'm not that good, and I hope to get better, but taking tens of thousands from mil access and turning that money into armies and buildings prematurely seems to me to be a bit like you might as well just turn the difficulty down instead.

What? The whole point of him doing that is to mitigate the difficulty level itself. Your logic is nonsensical. If he wanted to play a lower level where he got more money per turn he would have but that would have been boring because the battle difficulty goes down. Part of legendary difficulty is playing the system against itself. Why do so many people not understand that utilising the mechanics of a game so it benefits you as a player is what the mechanics are there for in the first place? Ridiculous

ya im not a big fan of attila for starters the ai razes way to much and the corruption in the late is really overdone, in rome 2 there were ways to deal with but in attila there is only like one tech and it only reduces it about 3-5% for example ill capture a city like rome and i will lose money makes no sense until they fix those problems im happy playing shogun 2 and rome 2
