Really glad to see a Shogun 2 video. I know Warhammer brings in more views and has way more active players, but a couple of these older historical titles are gems, CA at their best, and worth playing occasionally to add some variety. People really like seeing you challenged (it’s not about seeing you lose, I don’t think) and it’s the close, hard-fought battles that seem to attract the most interest. Thanks what This game can offer: beautiful, challenging battles in a polished package. I love how large of an impact things like terrain and positioning have in S2, Warhammer 2 just isn’t the same. Short of cheesing sieges, a widely superior army in Warhammer wins. If you play your cards right in Shogun 2, you can absolutely smash bigger, better armies. I love that. Using trees, hills, ambushes, and bold charges on generals can allow you to overcome huuuuuge discrepancies in unit quality. And it all just looks so damn good.

@@Carbonific Actually "Tekeida" is correct. It is spelt たけだ Ta-ke-da but there is a slight intonation between the ke and da which makes it kei. Generally his pronunciation is correct though. Japanese words are almost always pronounced the exact way they are spelled so idk why people struggle to pronounce them correctly so much lol

That first battle was exciting. The choke-point-kill-zone-pincer move at the bridge, the close call with the general, the swift 2nd bridge battle against the reinforcing army. Commanding armies is almost instinctive for you now, reacting instantly to everything on the battlefield with great precision. How many hours do I need to put into the game to achieve that? One thing I enjoy about these videos, is hearing your think-out-loud narration that'll provide valuable insight to your decisions. Please keep this up, truly enjoyable.

I don't think there's a singular amount of time to learn how to play Total War (or anything) because it varies from person to person and the quality of learning. Just keep playing on a difficulty that's slightly uncomfortable, but still fun enough to keep you engaged, and it'll come naturally as you're able to anticipate AI actions and learn situational responses.

Rice exchanges are great if you put them in rich provinces with a metsuke and a gold mine or fertile/very fertile soil for speacialised money making provinces. Also you should try using stand and fight on generals because it gives huge buffs in a large area around you and makes ashugaru destroy samurai

@Somethinghumble5 жыл бұрын
One unit of food surplus counts for one point of growth in each province. The rice exchange only increases the market growth by five in that one province while lowering the growth by one, so as soon as you have more than 5 provinces it's no longer efficient. Also having one market chain fully upgraded is a good idea in a town with a magistrate for the cash flow before realm divide.
@Kairac1125 жыл бұрын
I disagree. I'd rather keep my populace happy with Sake Dens and up the income. I up my farms to max, but I prioritize fertile and very vertile soils, sometimes average, while keeping meagre at a low-priority upgrade. I do that in times of peace, mostly, when I really have nothing else to do. Markets are good, but try to go for provinces with school or gold mines, you should build markets only in provinces that already make you a lot of money for even more money. Alternate between markets, sake dens and monasteries. I up my provinces for 2 building slots at least, while keeping the 'borders' of a region firmly under control with a vanguard province and a fully enforced castle following that. Owari and settsu are two of my favourite provinces in this game. They have bridges to connect them with the rest of the land, at least 1 buffer province close to it and generally important historical wise.
@deriznohappehquite5 жыл бұрын
@@Lilybun It depends on the number of towns you have. Food provides growth to every town. Rice Exchanges, Merchant Guilds, etc. consumes food, but provides a lot of growth to one town. The benefit of Rice Exchange, etc. is that it concentrates your economy into a smaller number of cities, where you'll be able to more easily defend it and manage it with Metsuke. Personally, I like to have a few extremely well defended economic and military centers in strategic locations, then keep the rest of my territories at a low level. I find that building a few castles around the map also lets you partially demobilize when you're not at war, and thus more quickly get your farms up to level 4. You can also tax more efficiently.

Higher tier market buildings consuming food seems like such a bad idea. It seems like when you reach a critical point in province amount, higher tier markets just become uneconomical. The total town growth due to food across all provinces is just so much greater. I might be wrong, though.

I know I'm late but for the bridge battle, Yari Samurai are actually stupidly, ridiculously good at holding bridges. You could have posted your one Yari Sam unit on the bridge, and they probably would have been able to single handedly hold them right there. The enemy archers would be too stupid to find the best angle in the melee cluster, and even if you ultimately get that Yari unit wiped, they can easily rack up over 500 kills. In the meantime you can take most of your infantry across the river to charge their rear.
@ggleplussuxx4787 Жыл бұрын
Yari samurai lose to yari ashigaru in spear wall, even with base stats, yari sam are for charging, pinning and holding, they're outclassed by ashigaru vs AI. Yari ashugaru are a superior static defense unit, most cost efficient, and can be used offensively too if you build right (lategame ashigaru easily reach 15+ attack, 4 armor, 10+ morale). I won legendary uesugi with nothing but yari ashigaru spam with couple light cavs in each stack.
@elboyo8343 Жыл бұрын
@@ggleplussuxx4787 I mean I know from personal experience that yari samurai beat ashigaru on a bridge battle because even if you put them on spear wall, the formation gets broken on a bridge. It doesn't matter that in a line battle ashigaru kick ass, on a bridge all they'll be is a meat shield.
@elboyo8343 Жыл бұрын
@@ggleplussuxx4787 the samurai are far superior in areas where spear wall can be activated but not sufficiently made use of, like on a bridge or small pathway. In those instances putting samurai on spear wall is better than ashigaru because the samurai can defend themselves when the formation breaks, which it will.

I definitely prefer your Warhammer stuff, but these historical ones are a fun change of pace in small doses. Warhammer is great but there are some major balance issues which you overcome with cheese. This has you making actual tactical decisions and your formations play a much bigger role because a giant spell can't just blow them to pieces. It just feels tighter and more refined. But I wouldn't give up fireballs and T-Rexes for it.

The whole idea with the rice exchanges is to improve industry wealth which is the source of taxation as well as town wealth. When you tax cycle every turn it shits all over your town wealth and you get no growth and end up very quickly with no town wealth in every settlement because the high taxes deplete the town wealth. So food giving growth does nothing. What it does do is let you upgrade settlements to fortresses and castles, but there's no point doing that in every settlement because there aren't enough buildings which can provide a significant economic benefit and it's a waste of koku to build military buildings in every settlement. Besides that, you're not going to want every settlement to be so extremely defensible. If you want to go no upgrade to rice exchange everywhere, hit minimal taxes from turn 1 and ride that libertarian dream to growthville. It takes fucking ages but eventually your growth will rise so much it will exceed that which you can make per turn from tax cycling. Seems like somebody sent the spirit of Milton Friedman or Murray Rothbard to CA's studios when they were making this!

@Kairac1125 жыл бұрын
Personally, I like the more simplistic and direct approach of Shogun 2 and although some might argue that there's not enough unit diversity, there's no bullshit, either. Each unit has a specific use, like the Naginata Samurai, which I personally consider a mandatory siege unit despite being categorized as a melee unit. Diplomacy is as shit as it's in all Total War games, but I've managed to manipulate the world to the taste of my immersion (for example, I almost never attack Ashikaga before realm divide - I let them declare on me, giving me a reason to take Kyoto.) Many of the things you feel are missing you could probably add with mods. Naval combat is up to your tastes, again, I personally find it alright. Maybe I'm just a hopeless weeb, but this is my favourite total war game. Edit: The provinces are quite few, as well. 65 or 68 in sengoku jidai (shogun 2 campaign) and a bit more in Fall of the Samurai with the Ainu island and a few other provinces added. This means that most, if not all provinces, have a value which you should consider before conquering. The type of soil is the most important with fertile and very fertile soils taking priority as well as the resources you find scattered across Japan's provinces. For example, I played as the Oda and after taking Suruga, securing my homeland, I immediatly begun an invasion of Kyushu, the southernmost part of Japan and fought the Otomo, who had christianized the entire island at this point. I like the battle realism mode, but I play on the hard setting. Very hard modifies your units' morale and stuff.

Try the Strongholds of the Samurai mod and make a deal with yourself that you have to manually fight sieges. The castles are so much more realistic and interesting (based on historical examples, the mod creator does a ridiculously good job). It can be a bit buggy with unit path finding, but it improves with each update.

I don't understand the obsession with "fixing" food at this stage. There's enough of a surplus to support at least two more high level castles, and the tech for producing more, if needed is in place. What's the big deal? At this stage, the local growth from the rice exchanges is about even to the global growth caused by food, and local growth is better anyways, since you can deploy metske to tax your wealthiest provinces anyways. Also, with tax cheesing, your town wealth is gonna go down to 0 anyways, due to the -25 from discontent every other turn.
