Great video about an underrated game. 3k could be THE the game in the TW series, really worth playing as it is polished, engaging and simply modern enough to enjoy in 2020, meaningful decisions in tech research, great choice of historical period and truly amazing campaign mechanics (politics, espionage - really make a difference). On the other hand they messed up multiplayer big time by deemphasizing records mode at the release, and while superheroes could have worked in wsrhammer due to vast diversity of OP units, lack of tactical relevance and balance on the battlefield and limited choice of settlement types pushed most engaged multi players away. Its a shame that multiplayer lobby is constantly empty despite how great the game is. The fact that there are no streamers covering it is probably the most painful evidence and the vicious circle continues. Still, it should be anyone’s #1 choice for multiplayer campaign.

If you are familiar with the Three Kingdoms period and pay attention to the promotional materials, you'll immediately realize that CA focuses on the Romance first and foremost. Let's look at the announcement trailer, for example. it shows off Romance-exclusive events such as the Oath of the Peach Garden, the duel between the Oath Brothers and Lü Bu, and the opening quote of the Romance.

Personally the Mandate of Heaven deserves a way higher rating for me. It adds so much more history and early game uniqueness to a campaign. Especially for 10 dollars, it delivers in my opinion. 8/10

Good review. This game is a masterpiece. There’s one thing I disagreed with you on though: The building system is definitely not one dimensional and isn’t about colour matching. If you thought this then you have only scratched the surface of the building system depth. I challenge you to take another look at it. Hint: the colours synergies together, combining the Wu Xing principles at a higher level. Green and red work well for food production and military. The tier 1 income commandaries should have all three income types with the food trader being the missing component to industry and commerce focused commandaries. These need high population and ‘all income’ bonuses. Even the popular player made guides on Steam and KZbin missed the remarkable depth here. In an earlier version of the game, population only buffed peasantry income, but when it was changed to ‘all income’ with a later patch most guides became obsolete.

1:14:40 I disagree with your here. Shock Cavalry and Melee Cavalry, despite both being horse units, have different roles once they are unleashed on the enemy. The main damage output of a Shock Cavalry is delivered by the initial charge. After the charge was delivered, the Shock Cavalry will do poorly in melee combat. They are best utilized as hit-and-run unit. This is also emphasized by their ranged block chance, which is 0% on the vast majority of this unit type. If they don't do a lot of damage with their charge, then they will be in a huge disadvantage against any infantry unit. While the Melee Cavalry has less initial charge damage, they do a lot better in melee combat once the charge stops. Their high ranged block chance and ranged damage reduction of 50% also allows them to be more than just a charge unit. They can be bullet sponges for the enemy archers, and also fight against infantry for a long time due to their still decent raw damage output after the charge. This makes them more versatile than the Shock Cavalry, which is only here to charge down the enemy.

You are absolutely right on the differences, sure, but as I explained, charges are so effective in this game that cycle charging, or hit and run tactics as you say, are much better than pinning melee cavalry down, as well as the general metagame of how battles pan out. Since having unlocked cavalry is so important to resist other cavalry and threaten enemy infantry, having spare cavalry is pretty important so you can't afford to have them pinned down so long. The metagame is definitely shock cavalry oriented since battles are pretty fast and almost entirely decided by whoever can 'unlock' their cavalry and charge the infantry line. The negatives of shock cavalry, such as nonexistent range block chance can be circumvented by simple micro or by charging into archer lines themselves since most ranged units have very bad charge resistance. I feel the only uses melee cavalry is in the early game, when the early shock cavalry's charge (i.e. peasant raiders, lance cavalry, mounted lance militia) is not quite enough to immediately cause a rout. In the late game, there's no question about shock cavalry's superiority since cataphracts, imperial lancers have absurd charge bonus plus they are armoured and have decent melee stats. Even the reform-unlocked Jade Dragons that is available to everyone, has shields to block ranged fire.

Militia and other non-dragon / non- imperial / non-cataphract shock cavalry are outclassed by your basic Melee Cavalry, especially in the early game when the majority of the units has low moral. I found myself often losing huge parts of my cheap shock cavalry when I tried to rout the enemy archers. They get battered by the arrows before you even reach them, and then, as you already stated, their charge is not enough to rout them. They are forced to fight in the archers in melee combat, or you pull them out right after charging. Both are not very great options early on, because your own cavalry will most likely rout at this point. It works just fine with macroing though, but its very attention-consuming. xD You should also take into account that the units will become fatigued eventually, which almost completely diminishes their charge damage. Melee Cav on the other hand has higher morale and can fight the basic milita units for a long time before routing. They are not so much dependent on their charge. And yes, Elite Shock Cavs are superior in the late game. Charging into an enemy elite unit with your insane charge bonus is just so satiesfying to see with the good collision properties.

The one thing I just couldn't stand in this game is the unit cards lineup in battles. I seriously need them to be just one line instead of two lol, it completely messes with my battlefield awareness with how I'm used to arranging cards and to where they are on the battle map. The scope of the games are vastly different since AoE is a base-building RTS, whilst Total War games are turn-based grand strategy with real-time battles, but if your friend enjoys more methodical, slower-paced games like Civilization series e.t.c. it could be an appealing bridge between both genres.

This was the decesive battle for me between Warhammer 2 and Three Kingdoms. Thank you very much for the info and your work on this review. There are so many mods on the workshop,any recomendations? I havent played a TW game since Rome 2 in 2015 where i poured hundreads of hours.

Make Them Unique (MTU) is currently the definitive mod for overhaul, especially if you appreciate the lore and want some of the missing characters represented. Wu Kingdaissance is another massive mod that adds new characters, they are incompatible together however, though I prefer the former's art style as it reflects the original game better. There's also the typical Western-made overhaul mods like Radious and SFO. Besides these, most of the mods on the Steam workshop are pretty much quality of life and cosmetic mods, so they are pretty interchangeable and you can just pick and choose between them.

Aren't the Zhang brothers playable in the Mandate of Heaven DLC as well as the Han loyalists? Seems weird to give such a high rating for the yellow turban remnants DLC and then a relatively lower rating to a DLC that has three additional yellow turban factions on top of a new start date, new Han loyalist factions, and altered playstyle changes for the major factions such as Liu Bei, despite them sharing an identical price. I also feel like 8 Princes deserves higher; the frequent events and mechanics (i.e. affinity) are something I wish were present in the base game. The factions introduced also had some interesting aspects to them, some of which were later added to factions in the base game (Liu Biao's mechanic for example seems to be lifted from a faction in Eight Princes). Great video, though.

The rating is based on the respective campaign, 190 is better than the 182 campaign for several reasons: Yellow Turban AI is very bad, if you play as Han loyalist the rebellion will be wiped out in 20-30 turns. Also the endgoal of Han Empire is essentially, to keep the Han empire alive, and that is redundant once YTR is defeated. There is also no continuation in the storyline to transition to a 190 political situation, so the Han never collapses into several warlord states, unless you start unrealistic wars yourself as a loyalist faction. Eight Princes on the other hand is just rushed and didn't receive much development time. Sure there are some 'unique' new mechanics, but the campaign is incredibly boring, has only a few unique characters (the 8 princes themselves), doesn't spice up the gameplay loop compared to the 190 campaign enough to warrant play as the 'main' campaign, and has no legendary pedigree compared to the stories of Cao Cao, Liu Bei, Dong Zhuo e.t.c. of the Three Kingdoms.

kinda funny you mention fire arrows right after immersion.. historically, they were almost never used for the most obvious reason, you can't have tens of thousands of soldiers lighting bolts, somehow aiming flaming bolts precisely and somehow not having them extinguished. It doesn't fly.

But not during Han dynasty, when Korea wasn;t really in contact that much with Han people. Also, Korea was quite divided at that time as well, so I think it's better to make a stand-alone game for ancient Korea. For vietnam, actually Jiao Zhi, as well as the Shanyue (which actually means 'mountain viet') are the factions that could represent Vietnam at that time, becos Viet people was living in Guangdong, Guangxi regions mostly at that time, and they did not have the idea of Vietnam yet, they still consider themselves as "yue" or "viet" which is 越 at that time.

Well Three kingdoms is a historical time period that has just been romanticized but was very real along with most of its heroes. I love all Romance of the three kingdoms stuff, and even samurai warriors which is the same period as china's just more historical. But dynasty warriors fell off and i would love to own this one as i love total war games but money makes sure that won't happen anytime soon. Warhammer is another i want to try, but for now i'll have toi settle for all the older titles that i missed that are all 75% off on steam atm. ;p Now that my computer is fixed, great vid btw. We have yet to really see a western release for three kingdoms content that is well done or flushes out the actual epicnes of it, i'm hoping that this is it.. the closest movie was Redcliffe.

Shogun and Shogun 2 are set around 1400 years after the end of the three kingdoms so they are not at all “same time period” unless you consider the Roman Empire the same as 16th century Portugal.

@@dabo5078 By the same time period i was talking about the things going on now the exact time period but a period of where similar things that were going on i.e. the warring states periods which both country's went through at separate times and is pretty much how everyone also refers to them. And the roman empire doesn't have anything to do with with 16th century portugael because its not a time period nor is a period of events that happen within a time period or several time periods. Its not even what they called themselves, its what we called them. Pretty sure most people get it though unless they have no knowledge of history or just glanced over it.

I just want to rant about how they did THREE Warhammer games in the span of a few years and didn't give us medieval 3. I know they did Troy, Britannia, and Three Kingdoms but come on, that's not what the fans were asking/wanting (its good to go other places and I am not complaining about any of these cause they were decent in my experience). No revisit to medieval series? I'd say you have a bigger fan base in Shogun/Rome/Medieval games than Warhammer. I'd love to see Shogun/Rome/Medieval all get a third installation.
