With so many DLCs out just a little over a year after release, things might get a little confusing for a newcomer to the series, so after getting many questions about which DLCs I would recommend, I decided to make this DLC purchase guide.

@Agustin Platz Do not buy the yellow turban dlc. Instead buy the Mandate of Heaven DLC as it already has the 3 "Better" Yellow Turbans called the Zhang brothers included in it. There are mods that allow you to get the unique units of the Yellow Turban DLC so skip it. There is also a mod that unlocks all the factions that unlocks a yellow turban faction in the south of china which could recruit He Yi and the gang if their territories get over taken.

Honestly, the main reason I buy the DLC is because of the FLC precisely. After reading and seeing all the changes and improvements they give for free, I feel they deserve my money. Also the DLCs are not expensive (well the blood one is for what you get) and I got 200 hours out of Troy for free so I still owe CA money even though I've bought all their games since Rome 1

Just to say, you made me buy Eight Princes as when I listened to you narrate the Eight Princes Civil War I thought 'Wow this is even juicier - if so much darker - than the Three Kingdoms!' And it has been argued that the Three Kingdoms period was, in historical terms a lot less important than the Eight Princes civil war the latter led to an implosion of the northern hegemony and a massive exodus of northern Han to the South. This exodus created the modern Chinese nation as we know it particularly with the mixing between southern and northern peoples to create what are now the modern Han.

nice overview. Sadly the video didn't age well as in after this video release I think they stopped adding DLCs to the game. But now on every steam sale the game is 66% off. So decided to buy all DLCs anyway. I think this game is an excellent supplement for people like me who are studying Chinese. Already learned quite a lot of vocabulary from this game. It's a shame that Shogun 2 total war doesn't have Japanese language support, otherwise could use that game for practicing Japanese as well

Since I stopped playing total wars some time around wh1, only this game had potential in my eyes, but I wasn't going to buy another tw for the full price.. I forgot about it for some time and now when I started watching marco polo again, it got me thinking.. what game can I play that includes china and first thing that got to my mind was Three kingdoms. I must say since I was a total war fan, then completely moved to pdx games, I don't often have a good judgement of upcoming games and dlcs, but I was right about this one. So, the Battle of Guandu (or the Divided North), Battle of Chibi (Crimson Cliffs? The Southern Alliance?), then definitely 220, which would coincide with the rise of the Three Kingdoms (officially), but also, more importantly, the greatest long-term rivalry in an era filled with strategists: Zhuge Liang vs Sima Yi, the Northern Expeditions. Because since the Nanman ARE in the game, well, Zhuge Liang is set to go and conquer them.

I like the suggestions of future chapter pack DLCs. It completes the flow of history. How about you petition a future update or DLC/FLC revolving around creating vassals ( giving a character in your court some land and create a new faction ) ? Something like a court mechanic. Also, something about assassination. The current spying mechanic offered many choices to spice up the gameplay. But I especially come for the assassination of the faction leader and then instantly assimilate that faction in the spy mechanic. That's like a Total War trademark. You have my thanks.

Mendate of Heaven is best dlc in my opinion. i really like the fervour mechanic, but you need to wait a patch without bugs to play your campaign as fast as possible, because by the next patch there will be bugs. A World betrayed, i bought it, but never played it yet. will play lu bu and sun ce as this dlc is only for those 2 campaigns imo. The Furious Wild, nice addition to the game imo. and major map update , i can't help but feel like this is how the map should have been since the start (mainly with the gates). 8 princes, wasn't interested in it, maybe i'll give it a try one day.

Man You have been waiting way too long to play World betrayed, both factions are fun as hell, their unique mechanics really give you purpose and utility; the only con if any is that once you start going both mechanics turn OP asf, especially Sun Ce. But yeah, play it. Nanmann gave me my favorite campaign yet, with Shi Xie 👌🏼

Personally the one thing I really miss in Three Kingdoms TW at this stage is the absence of naval battles. It is the missing link immersion wise for me. Naval engagements occured in rivers ( with less space for manoeuvre), but they could still be implemented as part of land battles like we have in Rome2 or FOTS on "coastal battle maps" (ships supporting and unloading troops ) and we could still have small scale naval battles or transport ships engagements, instead of the current auto-resolving river engagements.

Further to that, it would help make the new Gate passes more relevant as they currently block the land routes but not the river ( the AI just sails between gates) so it would be possible to block the river with a fleet and have interesting battles near the gates with land and naval forces together. Also there could be pirate or sailor characters like Gan Ning, Cai Mao with special abilities that help during the naval battles, it would be really fun and also it would make the Wu faction more realistic because their current bonuses (centered on cavalry, which is surprising) do not reflect the fact that they had the most competent sailors in China. In game it would allow them to control the Yangtze river better and conquer the commanderies on the river shores more easily (if they have better ships to support their armies as a bonus on top of their movement range bonus). But okay maybe I am dreaming :)

They are lazy, and the players didn't like naval battles since the terribles. Naval battles of Rome 2. Sotjey dropped it and probably we will never see naval battles again until they release empire total war 2 or a pike and shot game

If you are not too pressed about historical accuracy, I actually really recommend 182, because it scrambles the map a lot more and gives every campaign more different map situation. In one game, I even had Tao Qian rise as one of the 3 most powerful.. because he captured almost all of the yellow turban lands I am actually still waiting for more factions before I get 194, it's the only one I don't have.. cuz Lu Bu and Sun Ce aren't characters I really like

I'm a fan of 8P, I liked the campaign flow and its time period but like you mentioned about it was kind of like a FoTS type dlc but it was only like 10 dollars compared to fots(which is now a saga) that cost more so they could've made a much better dlc if they wanted to(I also think it should've came later)

I would suggest just the base game on sale for new players. The base game is probably the best value. Then once you start getting the hang of the game add perhaps the World Betrayed DLC first which is in neither editions and then go from there

Probably a map rework in the north, more gates to separate Han territory from potential nomadic factions. Seeing how the bandit network nodes already extends beyond the map makes me believe they will add a few territories in the north to represent, Xianbei and Xiongnu tribes

Biggest issue I've experienced with mandate of heaven is playing as dong zhou; i never captured the emperor. I was told to move to luoyang after the assassination of he jin. which i did and then nothing happened. No more missions

You will be able to play the three Zhang brothers factions but not He Yi, Huang Shao, Gong Du so not a complete experience but these two groups of yellow turbans do play quite differently with different reform trees even

It will continue onwards. You will see get some of the base game events but you would see the events from say the worlds betrayed start or the fates divided start as the map state just wouldn’t make sense for that type of integration. At its core the game is sandbox for all start dates

I was originally not very keen on buying into TK because I knew nothing about the history and lore, but now I'm watching the chinese series from 2010 and I'm having heck of a time. And really most of the main characters are there. I might give it a shot. Just contemplating whether I want the Yellow Turbans or Mandate of Heaven, because both don't fit into my budget. I def. wanna play as a YT faction and the mandate of heaven ones seem like more thematic.

I would recommend Mandate of Heaven since you get more than just the yellow turban especially since it’s probably your only dlc I am guessing since the yellow turban dlc has the advantage of having other start dates such as a 194 start that is interesting. Also to note all six generals from the yellow turban dlc can be acquired by the three Zhang brothers factions in Mandate of Heaven (each faction gets 2) so you get to experience them from just Mandate of Heaven (no unique faction mechanic of those factions but you at least get to try the generals)

The practice of having different starting years as DLC is very alien to me. Is it to compensate for the fact that only the early game can follow the "canon" story until everyone goes off-rail? I personally prefer 194 over 190 for some factions (Liu Bei, Lu Bu, Cao Cao), but other than that there aren't a lot of differences for most of the factions. Some factions are erased in the later starting dates (Dong Zhuo, Kong Rong), but I hardly consider that a selling point.

It’s a common practice for another three kingdoms franchise called Romance of the Three Kingdoms by Koei. I think CA was a bit lost after the eight princes misfired and just fell back on this idea. It’s not perfect and hopefully they can have a better strategy in the future

I'm still slightly confused by the chapter packs. So timelines will flow into each other as the year approaches in game? Like factions will pop up and move to try and meet their other start date locations?

yes for certain factions! for example, Shi Xie, Yuan Shao, and Kong Rong will head to their respective 190 starts through scripted events as the Mandate of Heaven nears 190, and bandit factions like Zheng Jiang and Zhang Yan will also pop up around then

It sounds like the dlc mostly adds new factions and start dates/start positions? Any new mechanics added are added to the base game then?

Jereboy the new mechanics have all been provided for free as patches alongside DLC launches so all the major changes to the game since launch, imperial court, bandit revamp, map changes have been added for all players for free. These DLC mainly add new playable factions and new starting dates

Michal Krasnodebski I stand by what I said. The DLC is not as bad as the review states. I don’t consider how many unique character art to be a measure of a DLC’s worth. In the grand scheme of Total War DLCs unique character art has never been a thing until mods took over and now apparently if you play with MTU or SAD the game is boring because dog generic generals. Eight Princes’s mechanics are solid with each of the eight princes playing quite differently from each other. You get interesting new starting positions like Sima Ying in Shu which is still not playable in any of the other DLCs. Sure some parts of the DLC were poor copy and paste jobs including literal words copied from the base game without editing to fit the Jin Dynasty period or how Sima Lun’s mechanics is just Cao Cao’s with a different scale (although he added some new spying features on top of the credibility mechanic) but overall the DLC was one of the least bug filled DLC for Total War Three Kingdoms. I never praised it as the best one as if you look at my rankings it’s AWB, Furious Wild, MoH, then Eight Princes. I am just stating it is a quality DLC and don’t let the reviews tell you otherwise

Hi! I love your guides. I had 3k without any DLC and I see that some archers have poison shot, but I don't know if is the default arrow or how I can activate it. I always play record mode, could be that?

poison arrows could be unlocked by a strategist skill on the bandit subculture so if you captured a potential bandit character in game then you can gain access to them. Some units have them as the default arrow like Yan Baihu's faction unique unit or yellow turban yaoguai hunters but I think you probably recruited a bandit strategist without noticing his or her skill tree had poison arrow.

@@MultiAndreas009 Hey Andy, I have an RTX2070 and an AMD Ryzen 5 3600. Game runs smoothly at 50-80FPS with Ultra settings.

@@SeriousTrivia you are really missing then some flavour. Vanilla is good, but with some mods the game is really great. My most favourite mods are Radious and MTU ;-)

I tend to play on vanilla because I also play to make guides and such so introducing mods changes the game dynamic

@@SeriousTrivia I understand you. Especially because overhauls like Radious change almost everything. But you could play a Modded Campaign for presentation purposes if you find the time. Take an overhaul like Radious, add a fans favourite like MTU and some other mods of your liking and you have a game more changed than patch 1.5 and 1.6 together (including all the nice new benefits).

think of an encouragement for the developers to continue to develop the game and add new content. The major changes are always free for all the players who doesn't want to pay for the new playable factions with the patch that comes with each DLC but say if they don't make any sales then the game would just die

How do you have chinese voice overs but english subtitles? I chose the language to chinese but the words became chinese as well. I want english words but chinese voice overs

the voice settings are in game rather than in the properties. So you can have your language on steam set to English then go in game and in the setting choice Chinese voiceovers

super interesting videos. i got a question around guan yu. so hes like known irl and ingame for the strongest warrior (or one of the strongest?), so will there be or is there a faction that will have a character thats similar to guan yu which makes sense historically. so for example did he have a son or a pupile who then after him became just as badass ? :D i fkin love guan yu thats why im asking :P

Oh so on par with the likes of Guan Yu in terms of raw historical dueling abilities, you have Ma Chao, Dian Wei, Xu Chu, Lu Bu, and Xu Huang.

The eight princes period is not that interesting. It is a bunch of incompetent morons backstabbing each other until they get run over by their own mercenaries. Having no one smart or competent involved is not interesting. That is just the chinese everything chinese is better coming out Also the chapter pack model fits Rome 2 a lot.That is when the old shogun 1- shogun 2 dlc system started morphing. There were a lot of culture packs there that added factions to highlight the diversity of the map. The Rome 2 chapter pack analogue were the separate campaigns like caser in gaul and the punic wars. They added stuff in the main game but had their own smaller period. The total war warhammer games had those in game 1 and they were not well received. They changed tack in game 2 to add more lords and starting positions on the main maps. I believe a goodly part of their backtracking after the 8 princes was seen through that lens. Most people play the main games and long term fans want the replay-ability of changes in the main game. The bigger problem with 8 princes though was it was ill timed. The main game was shallow with massive areas of empty map. If they did it now with the main game being much more fleshed out I could see it going better. The same way after civ 5 came out in bad shape and had a bunch of dlc civs. The fanbase was angry because they thought proper expansions were being replaced. Once they knew they weren't people were much more receptive to civ dlcs. I would want a chu-han and the rise of the t'ang dlc to shake up the map.

For the Eight Prince DLC, since the setting take place in 280 about a whole century ahead of the 3 kingdom era. Is the units difference from 3kingdom era? Or they just copy and paste the units from the base game to it?

They altered some units like there are now Dao retinues instead of sabers but it is largely the same roster

Game of thrones plays out like war of 8 princes. Grampa dies, evil bitch takes over, plays all houses/brothers against each other, one brother kills the other's entire family except for one member who becomes a leader of a future faction. There is a larger northern tribe invasion, southern tribe also invades led by a guy claiming to be related to the first emperor.

Troy is made by a separate team at CA and does not impact Three Kingdoms development at all. Troy is only a saga title so I don't actually imagine they will get much continued support into the future.

Personally I would have preferred it if they had made Sima Yi a character with a more unique gameplay mechanic. He is in my opinion just as significant to the history of the Three Kingdoms period as the big three (Cao Cao, Liu Bei and Sun Jian). People who are not well versed in the lore and history behind the game wouldn't know just how momentous Sima Yi was and how much he ties into the Eight Princes DLC. To them he would just be one of many portrait characters who seemingly is just a strategist version of Lu Bu. Now giving Sima Yi his own faction would be out of the question unless they are going to release another chapter pack that takes after A World Betrayed. What I think they could do with him is, say you recruit him into your faction, at some point in the late game he manages to oust your faction leader and becomes the new faction leader, with your faction banners changing and if you're a kingdom or Duchy, it gets renamed to Jin. Maybe switching your faction to Jin could come with it's own unique units and benefits to the transition worthwhile. The same could apply to whichever faction he is working for. This probably would be a bit too complicated to work properly but that's one idea the devs could do with him.

This is one of the best total wars (if not the best) CA has ever created. If you buy a dlc you can be sure they repay you with a lot of fun and tons of new content it's a shame and probably CAs worst crime to abandon this game. I don't get. If they continued working on the game like they did with Rome 2 or with the Warhammer games this game could've been even more amazing to us and in the same time a cash cow for CA because the wasn't even unpopular, it and it's dlcs sold very well. So I don't get it why they just abandoned it.
