Nehekhara is not a person, but another name for the Land of the Dead. There are 4 faction leaders : Arkhan the Black (The Lich King, servant of Nagash, God of Death), Settra the Imperishable (The Mighty Ruler of Khemri, the capital), High Queen Khalida (The Lady you saw, she fights for her godess) and Grand Hierophant Khatep (Leader of the Mortuary Cult and exiled from Nehekhara, but still loyal to it). Others more versed could explain in more details but here are the basics :)
@Drocksas

On the whole a good summary, but a couple minor corrections: Nagash is not really the "God of Death," just a stupid-powerful (and the first if I remember right) Necromancer and self-appointed Lord of Undeath. Granted, that may have changed with Age of Sigmar, but I don't really care about that portion, so I ignore it. Settra is the "Imperishable." Minor mistake, but considering just how many friggin' titles he's got, you KNOW he's put people to death for getting even one of them wrong. This one's not really a correction, but more of an addition: Khalida fights for Asaph, the serpent Goddess, yeah, but she also fights because she REALLY hates vampires. I believe her sister is the first true Vampire after Arkhan gave her a flawed elixir of life or something.

@@Drocksas Pardon for Nagash haha, I mix The Old World and AoS sometimes and it's true he was not the god of death, but the first necromancer, source of all that is undead in the world. Sorry for Settra's title I have no excuse XD And yes for Khalida, her sister is Neferata, the very first vampire. I don't know if Arkhan has any involving with the elixir but Neferata messed with the books of Nagash and her creation transformed her into a vampire.
@Drocksas
@Drocksas 2 жыл бұрын
@@cradlis3456 As I recall (keep in mind I'm using Cody Bonds' Noob's Guide to Arkhan for reference, so my sources are semi-dubious), Neferata tortured Arkhan for a good length of time before he spilled the recipe for whatever made Nagash immortal, but with a flaw that, when cooked up by Neferata, resulted in the vampiric twist.

The only thing that changes is which character is placed in the cutscene, really.

The Tomb Kings have a few major players in the lore: Settra and Nagash. Settra was the first great king who conquered and ruled over all of Nehekhara, but he was mortal and wanted to rule forever. In his quest for immortality, he founded the Mortuary Cult where the Liche Priests would work to find the secret of immortality. But they weren't quick enough and Settra died before he could become immortal so he was entombed and his body preserved so that he might one day rise to rule again. This started a tradition of each king doing the same once they die. It wasn't until the time of the Third Dynasty that the secret of immortality would be discovered by none other than Nagash. As was tradition, the first born son of the ruling king was given to the Mortuary Cult and the second son would inherit the throne, this way the Cult is guaranteed at least one Liche Priest in a king's lifetime. Nagash became the High Priest of the Mortuary Cult but he wanted to rule. On the day of his father's burial he pretended to sacrifice some Dark Elf slaves that had been given as tribute, instead he had them entombed in his father's pyramid where he would keep them and he'd keep them alive as long as they taught him dark magic. Combining this with his knowledge from the Mortuary Cult he became a master of life and death. He created the Elixir of Life but never shared the recipe and he commanded legions of undead as he usurped the throne from his own brother. Among his most loyal followers was Arkhan the Black (who is the Liche King mentioned in these cinematics and who you can play as). After ruling for 200 years and bankrupting the country to fund his Black pyramid, Nagash is overthrown and Arkhan captured. Arkhan is then forced to work with his captors to try to recreate the Elixir. But something went wrong (the lore differs here and things have been changed) and ultimately Khalida's cousin Neferata became the first of the Vampires. Nagash returned and once he conquered Nehekhara again, he went about performing a ritual to spread the curse of undeath so that all may serve him. But as he was about to finish, the Skaven freed a captive king, Alcadizzar, who stabbed Nagash with a warpstone blade. The wild magic caused the dead kings of old to rise once more, but as living corpses. Now the kings all squabble over who gets to rule, Khalida works to kill any vampire she comes across (especially her cousin), and Arkhan works to bring about the return of his master, Nagash.

@Definitely Not Definitive - Games There's a lot more I didn't include involving other characters for the sake of keeping the comment as brief as I could. But one such example was Vlad Von Carstein who was a member of Neferata's court back when he went by the name Vashanesh when the Tomb Kings were still living. When Nagash was resurrected the first time, he gave Vashanesh a ring that would allow him to recover from any injury so long as he wore it, but it also bound his entire vampiric Bloodline to Nagash's will. So Vashanesh allowed himself to be killed in battle, thus freeing the vampires from Nagash. Vashanesh then managed to recover due to the power of the magic ring and he fled to the far north to the Imperial Province of Sylvannia. He changed his name to Vlad and married the duke's daughter Isabella, eventually taking over the province and ruling there until he tried taking over the Empire and being killed in the attempt after his ring was stolen

saying that Nagash "bankrupting the country" is putting it lightly, he integrated the slaves that died building his pyramid in the foundation to strengthen it's connection to the winds of magic and turned his wife (which was his brothers wife before Nagash killed him) into his obedient zombie like servant. Nagash is the most evil being in the setting, even the chaos gods have some small positive aspects to them, Nagash doesn't.
@SerLoinSteak
@SerLoinSteak 2 жыл бұрын
@Jan Worth noting that the Queen of Nehekhara was a representation of the sacred covenant between the ruling family and the gods. Killing his brother's wife would've invited the wrath of the gods upon him. Instead he did whatever unspeakable deed to make her into what can only be described as a living banshee, not quite dead, but definitely not alive. And by taking her on as his wife, the gods were unable to directly harm Nagash no matter how hard the priests prayed

If you want to know more lore from the Tomb kings you can watch Noobs guide to Settra, Arkhan and Azhag. But I might as well make a tiny huge lore dump in the comments. The books of Nagash are written by the greatest necromancer and later god of death Nagash. He was the one that made all tomb kings undead, it is also from his books that vampires come from. The last Nehekaran queen, Neferata.studied the books and created an elixir of life that became the vampire's origin. The Black pyramid is Nagash’s base of power, mostly inactive now that he has caught a mild case of temporary death. And whenever it acts up the Tomb Kings get slightly perturbed since most of them actually rebelled against Negash.

So there was this Arch Nehekharan Necromancer named Nagash, He was the first one to practice necromancy and created the vampires, despite not ascending to godhood, he's revered as the god of the dead by all the vampire factions. He also cursed all the other Nehekharans with immortality. So all the Tomb King factions despise him and would do anything to enact their revenge. Except for one: Arkhan the Black, one of Nagash's servants during their reign as humans, Now an Arch Liche, Arkhan remained loyal and wishes to see the return of Nagash to the world. During the game Arkhan and the other Tomb Kings race to find the books of Nagash in order to gain access to the black pyramid, believed to hold immense power, Arkhan would use it to revive his dark lord, the others using it to restore the glory of their kingdoms for their own goals.

Khalida (others have already mentioned the correction on names elsewhere) is definitely a cool character in the Tomb Kings lore. I'd absolutely recommend looking into the Tomb Kings characters; not just Khalida, but especially Settra and Arkhan have a bunch of lore that spans the world with its consequences. As for the cutscenes, yeah, it's a common gripe with DLC factions that they didn't get much love when it comes to story stuff. And that, I suppose comes from Total War being more focused on the gameplay side of things than on the cinematic/story side of things. Unfortunate, but that is kind of the nature of the beast.

@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames Yeah, most of the playerbase agrees with you on that one! And as an aside, video games can be incredibly immersive and cinematic; some are even closer to interactive movies than your traditional game. It's just that Total War specifically focuses more on the gameplay than on describing much in the way of lore/character story. It's meant to be more of a self-insert thing where *you're* leading the armies of your chosen faction, so lore kind of takes a step back for that experience

So how the Vortex Campaign works is that you have to try to get five special phases/objects that exist throughout your campaign. You either try to obtain these special resources or do things that involve getting those phases/objects. Unfortunately, much of Warhammer 2's Vortex Campaign is about this and the Tomb Kings are a victim of this gameplay system. Essentially, you play as a select few characters within your race and compete with each other by obtaining these five books of Nagash to win the campaign and earn a bonus that improves your ability to conquer the world. There is some storyline but they're mostly texts in-game - presuming the player didn't close them out to either end the game or go on a world conquest. Creative Assembly does try to give some campaigns a good story to follow but you'll only find them in the later DLCs like the Wood Elf Twin Sisters or High Elf Batman and his duel with the Mad Max Goblin Lord.

Most of the tomb kings like Settra, Khalida, and Khatep oppose Nagash because, in life, Nagash was tyrant who murdered his brother to claim the throne, ruled Nehekara in a reign of terror, and after he was overthrown, raised an undead army to reclaim power resulting in a war that essentially destroyed Nehekara. The Liche King Arkhan the Black is the exception since he was Nagash’s right hand man and remains obsessively loyal to him even in death.

Time for a brief summery (very bare bones); Nehekara was once a major ancient Egypt style civilisation. It collapsed when the first born son of the current King Nagash was denied the throne cause tradition dictates the first son goes to the Mortiary Cult. There he learnt the ways of undeath and through some captured Dark Elves learns dark magic and creates what we know as Necromancy. A lot of events occur but he ultimately leads the nation to war and ruin. Later after escaping returns to poison and kill the very land itself before being stopped thanks to the Skaven and finally killed for the first time. He would later revive and fight Sigmar (the God of the Empire when he was just a Mortal man) and die to him where he would remain till the end of the world. Nagash is not a God (yet) and is in fact hated by all Tomb Kings. They consider him basically the equivalent of the anti christ and hate him to no end. He's Warhammers Dark Lord. Think your Voldermort, Sauron, Palpatine ect. He wrote the books with secrets of Necromancy but left out key points only he knew so no one could use them fully against him. From these translations though the first Vampires were made through a faulty Elixer of Immortality. The thing Arkhan and Nagash took. But Nagash only gave himself the truely best version. He doesn't even trust Arkhan completely. As such he has true immortality and even with his body destroyed his soul doesn't move on. Waiting to revive or be returned to form. Nagash is one of the grandest stories with Malekith the Witch King of the Dark Elves I find. Nagash may not be a God as of yet but is a borderline Demi God and has such potential even the Chaos Gods fear him as his end goal would lead them to starving. During the game you play as one of 4 characters. High Queen Khalida was the one you saw. She isn't a goddess but is functionally the avatar and prophet of Asph the Goddess of serpents in Nehekara. Her story is heavily tied to the Vampires. Her cousin is Neferata the first and many would say greatest Vampire who were created after Nagash's first defeat but before Nehekara fell centuries ago. High King Settra the Imperishable (and dozens more titles) is the main one. He was the guy in the trailer. He was the greatest King the nation ever knew and had ambitions for global domination and an ego to match. But where he expanded Nehekara greatly he would eventually die. Even he couldn't beat death. So before he died he established the Mortuary Cult to find a way to revive himself as a golden pure and mighty immortal ruler. This would lead to Nagash's inability to take the throne and ultimate betrayal. Grand Hierophant Khatep is the current head of the Mortuary Cult. Despite looking Undead he's very much alive being a Lich. He is highly rotted and mummified but hasn't truely died. He was banished by Settra after his resurrection for the state they were in. He was sent out to find a solution to Nagash's treachory and barred from returning under punishment of death. Arkhan is the Lich King. He is the lieutenant and right hand of Nagash. Originally a low noble in Nehekara he joined Nagash in the early days and is his oldest and most loyal servant. He wishes for nothing more than to revive his Master, Nagash and be by his side again. Unsure if this is his own will or Nagash's mighty influence on him. There's a very brief summery on them. I believe Book of Choyer has a video on Nagash. I'd recommend doing a lore video on him as he's my favourite character and one who has impacted a lot of the lore to a shocking degree.

The cinematics did vary minorly audio & visual wise but I would say that is because the task is essentially repetitive. You are after all need to find 5 out of 8 books to unlock obelisk to gain access to the black pyramid. I actually think the minimalistic approach was better. Total War does tend to be an "Ok I have done this. Now I need to do this." One can argue that the cinematic was efficient to put you back upon task. But I do agree with Bethanys point that the names of these books sound very fascinating. That is kind of the point the setting likes to tantalise you with information that make you go..."Now that is something cool I want to know about it" With Skaven it felt more varied because the tasks were varied. Like I recommended with the Skaven. The Book of Choyer has videos about the tomb kings. There is also alot of media out there. Cliche I know but you are just at the tip of iceberg or pyramid in keeping with the setting.

The cutscenes for the Tomb Kings really don't tell you anything about the story. Basically, there are four main Tomb King factions. Settra the Imperishable, High Queen Khalida, Arkhan the Black, and Khatep the Liche Priest. Settra is the major king of Nehekhara and ruled in eras before the rise of the Tomb Kings. He was awakened like all others by Nagash the Lich King before his defeat and gained his sapience after his fall. Having risen from the Golden age of Nehekhara, Settra deems himself the true ruler and has to clean up the mess of all his descendants. Essentially, it'd be as if Alexander the Great woke up in modern times with superpowers and decided every nation should kneel to him because of his impact on world history. Settra basically wants to just rule the world because he thinks no one else is fit for it. He is also considered one of if not THE MOST BADASS characters in all of Warhammer. You should definitely check out his lore. High Queen Khalida lived around the same time as Nagash and fought Queen Neferata in a ritual duel for the honor of their people. Neferata took Nagash's texts and became the first Vampire - this was Nagash's intended goal through the study of Necromancy. He wanted to become an "ultimate" undead and then use a skeleton army of all the dead in Nehekhara but failed before achieving the proper transformation. Khalida was about to become a vampire but cried out to the Nehekharan gods who used the undead energy inside her to bring her back as one of the first free-willed Tomb Kings. She is loyal to her gods and goddesses and wants to bring Nehekhara back in line with the order of the gods. She also wants to eradicate all vampires and destroy every remnant of Nagash. Arkhan the Black is Nagash's second in command. He wants to awaken the Black Pyramid so that Nagash could return and create a sweeping wave of undeath, bringing about the End Times. Arkhan believes that if Nagash conquers death and raises an army, he could take control of Nehekhara as he should, but also defeat Chaos. Chaos hates the undead because they do not feel anger or bleed which annoys Khorne, they do not rot or endure plagues which annoys Nurgle, they have no passion or emotion which annoys Slaanesh, and they have no past or future which annoys Tzeentch. Basically, the Undead have the best chance of defeating Chaos, but they also want to subjugate all the living as well. Arkhan's goal is to rule over Nehekhara and then travel north to the Vampire Count territories as they descended from Nehekharan priests. It's one of the coolest lore points of Warhammer Fantasy - saying that Eastern European Slavic vampires are descendants or even survivors of Ancient Egyptian priests. Surprisingly, that's actually somewhat historically accurate, considering the wars and intermingling of blood with Turkey and some Eastern European nations. Khatep is an odd one. He was also alive during Nagash's insurrection and was the first to defy him, being supremely loyal to the state of Nehekhara. This is different from Khalida who favors the Asp Goddess most of all and different from Settra who believes himself to be a living god - which is basically true tbh. He woke Settra and helped against the offensive to seal Nagash, but Settra was not pleased. He believed the Mortuary Cult and the Liche Priests to be liars since they claimed to awaken him with golden skin one day, but obviously, this was not the case. Not only that, but Nagash was a member of this group and tried to steal Settra's promised throne long after he died. So, since Khatep was the leader of this group, Settra banished him from Nehekhara and told him to never return until he could right his wrongs. Khatep is also the most powerful spellcaster in Nehekhara and travels to the west to battle the Lizardmen. He roams the world in search of ancient knowledge of the Lizardmen and Elves - the Dark Elves being the ones who revealed the beginnings of Necromancy to Nagash - in the hopes he could redeem himself. So, when the opportunity arises to secure the Black Pyramid, he jumps on it immediately. The problem with the 3 "good" Tomb Kings is that they're all also very selfish and greedy. Sure, they're on the "same side" but they also want to be the ones who get the last say. Khalida does not care for Settra's ambitions nor does she want to help Khatep, while Khatep NEEDS this moment to redeem himself and his comrades. Settra...he's just fucking Settra. Settra does what Settra wants. Seriously, you need to get the lore on Settra. He's one of the coolest characters in Warhammer Fantasy since he sits pretty much in the middle of the power hierarchy. He's strong enough to level kingdoms by himself, but he's not strong enough to one-shot gods. He's both the underdog and the power fantasy all at once. He's Tyrion Lannister if he was a sentient White Walker. He's Doctor Doom with a Moon Knight aesthetic. He's Count Dooku with a General Grievous body. My favorite character in all of Warhammer.

Unfortunately only the factions that were available on release of the game have more in depth cinematics for their campaigns only because the main campaign for the games kind of become an after thought for both the players and the devs mostly because the more open sandbox campaign mortal/immortal empires get a lot more attention and multiplayer.

Hi there, a bit late with the comment but I think you both should check out Warhammer Vermintide 2. It is a hack and slash game that sees a human Witch Hunter Captain, human mercenary, human pyromancer, a dwarf ranger and a waystalker wood elf join together in an uneasy but sort of comedic alliance to drive back the forces of chaos in the end times. It also includes rats. Lots of rats.

Someone who'd know better than me, but doesn't the black Pyramid give one the power to resurrect all who've ever died across the whole of the earth and control basically an infinite and endless army? To conquer all.

Settra and Nagash are 100% assholes. They are also the only factions within Warhammer besides the Skaven to win. Actually win. Even moreso than the Emperor of Mankind in 40K, Settra set out with a very clear goal, and the only goal he did not secure was subsuming Nagash into himself to become his final title, Lord of All Dead. However. Every other goal he set before him he made. Sometimes by sheer force of will. He unified the land, he swept all opposition before him, he subsumed the upstart Vampire Queen from taking his throne in revenge and even forced her back into his and then Nagash's employ at the end of the world by leaving her no place to run to as Archaeon crushed the world under the power of Chaos, just as he told her he would. While Settra has yet to make an appearance in Age of Sigmar, there has been a LOT of calls to bring him in against Nagash as a "rebel" force of undead construct and beast units with the powers of the undying Sun as his motif. Time will tell if this happens. His eternal enemy, Nagash, has literally become the embodiment of Death and Undeath and all who die in the world AoS become the property of Nagash save for the Slann. Even Sigmar's vast new stellar empire must give part of their souls to Nagash every time they are slain in battle.

Tomb Kings lore wise are easily one of the coolest races and theyre history is quite pivotal to the Warhammer world and they are one of my favorite factions to play in WH Total War but theyre cutscenes are a little underwhelming. Id suggest watching a few of them from Book of Choyer or Loremaster of Sotek.

If I may suggest, watch noobs guide to warhammer series by cody bonds, the videos tell the lore of different leaders in a funny way, that is also easy to digest, right in your alley in my opinion.

If you want some more lore heavy videos on TW Warhammer but you also want to laugh, may I heartily suggest the NOOBS GUIDE to WARHAMMER by Cody Bonds here on KZbin. They’re hysterical but pretty informative.

The Tomb Kings are one of my fav factions but their story in the game is pretty boring, (their lore is amazing!) You should watch the total war warhammer 3 tutorial campaign cutscenese! They really outdo themselves in that one!
