I hope you guys enjoy this review, it's my first one using a video editor to stitch multiple clips together into a coherent (mostly) review.
Hopefully, when I have the time, I can pick up a better video recording device, as opposed to using my phone all the time.
Any suggestions would be welcome, of course.
Leave some comments in the comments section, if you're feeling brave.
Thanks for watching!
(P.S. The intro music was written on the MPC LIve, MC-808, Moog Voyager XL, and Korg EMX-1.)

It is the only low end mixer that allows separate channels to be independently recorded into a computer. This function is currently only on much more expensive desks. Most USB mixers only send the whole mix. Thats the reason I bought it and I think it's very good.

@@TheGingerDan Thanks Dan. I have to say while I am very happy with my 12FX they have not found it in themselves to answer any of my rather basic forum questions posted around the same time I made this comment. I love to support British (Possibly not really any more) companies but find this really annoying... I cant wait until there is a similar product simultaneously usable audio interface inputs and outputs.... The Zoom l 12 looks very interesting and they can be bothered to answer questions. Just a little too much dough for me at the mo.

Get Spherical I ended up buying this mixer for the easy mix minus and separate channel recording. It was a bit difficult to finally figure out. The instructions are decent but not detailed enough. I ended up calling tech support and I’m almost certain I knew more than the guy on the phone. He told me it wasn’t possible to record my audio on one track and my pc Skype on another. That’s literally why I got this board. Luckily he was wrong.

Sorry for the super duper late reply, sometimes KZbin doesn't show me replies until much much later. I'm glad it was a much better device for your needs. Another commenter on here mentioned that it would've been better if the salesperson had recommended a better mixer for my needs, and I can't help but agree. My two biggest issues with it are A) No TRS outputs for sound. (Yamaha mixers of the same size have both XLR and TRS outputs, I would've appreciated it. And B) It has a persistent squeal that I can't get rid of. (Possibly a fault in this specific unit.) I think I would've liked it a lot more if I'd used it in a DAW setup for PC, as most positive comments about it talk about how good it is with a computer. Personally, I don't use it with a PC, I use it with my dawless setup.

I purchased this to help me put together demos -- I'm kind of old school, but trying to be more of a technologist -- the USB connection was part of the big draw to this one -- I can leave this connected to my laptop, and can leave a drum machine, bass, and guitar plugged in.

The 100hz button is a Low Frequency cutoff (or more frequently called a highpass filter). It cuts off the signal coming in below 100hz. You'd use it to keep your sound from being muddy. If you had say a kick drum and a bass guitar you could enable the 100hz cut to stop the kick drum from muddy'ing up the bass sound. Or it can be used if you're getting low frequency hum from electrical interference or something and want to cut it off. With Synths you'd probably not want it on typically. Seems like the board just isn't ideal for your application and you'd probably prefer a line mixer or something.

The only problem is that you buy an item that is not design for your use. This mixer is designed to podcast and live audience. It does not have 1/4 inch output because those are dedicated to a dual mix monitoring. You have 2 headphone mixes and you do not need it..... This is a really great product.... It is just not designed for your needs.

Too bad the sales person didn't take a little time to steer you towards a better fit. This is a good mixer, just not for your needs. This is designed for a basic solo artist needing a small footprint mixer. Keep us posted as to what you end up with.

I think the salesperson did the best they could. I wanted something small and easy to move around, built in effects, etc. It's not a bad mixer, just small for my needs and a little weird not having TRS outs, but a decent mixer. I've since added a Chinese mixer to the mix, (no pun intended). I've posted a review for it on my channel, if you're curious to know how that turned out. It basically cost me $80, and the results are really surprising.

I bought this mostly as a mixer for my stereo keyboards and it works very well for that. You can use the first four channels as two stereo channels and then the next three as stereo inputs. I agree that the RCA jacks are a bit of a nuisance, but it's easy to get an adaptor cable. Then, the last channel is an FX return for my FX loop. This is my major complaint with the unit, which is that the Aux out for the FX loop is only mono, and it really ought to be stereo. But otherwise it works well, and the individual FX knobs on each channel work very well. Using an FX return disables the internal effects, so I don't use them. I don't mind the TRS outs for the main output, since my powered studio monitors have TRS inputs, and this actually gives me better sound. In this setup, I have 5 usable stereo channels, which very few inexpensive compact mixers have. You have to match your mixer to your use case. If the inputs and layout aren't what you're looking for, than you might be better off with something else. But the effects, USB capabilities, sound quality and overall layout of this unit are all excellent and well up to class standards.

Did you read the manual that Soundcraft took the trouble to print and supply with the mixer? The 100hz button is a high pass filter (it removes low frequencies below 100hz to reduce booming/popping). It really isn't on to say you don't know what it does "because I'm an amateur". Despite its low cost, this is a high quality miniature mixer, designed for those who do not need a multitude of features or large numbers of inputs/outputs. That's why it has XLR, not jack outputs. You can make or buy simple adaptors to enable you to use it with equipment that only has TRS or mono jacks.
@KristianWontroba

It's a good overview of the device which I own myself own. For that, a thumb up from me. Maybe it's not a good fit for you, but that's on you for not doing the due diligence prior to buying it. Don't shit on the gear. It's doing exactly what it was designed to do. We've all bought something that didn't work out, let's suck it up as a lesson learned instead of projecting blame on a perfectly good mixer. You'll hurt its feelings don't you know! LOL So, regarding the 4 "XLR" (also 1/4" inputs BTW), they can be used as 2 stereo inputs by using channel 1 and 2, for left and right from one device, then using channel 3 and 4 for left and right out of another. Then you pan channels 1 and 3 hard left and channels 2 and 4 hard right for an accurate stereo image from those 2 devices. A little trick I had to do back in the early 90s when having a Tascam 4-track cassette mixer/record offered only 4 mono channels and was more expensive back then, even before adjusting for inflation! Yes, we still had to use pay phones if we wanted to call someone while traveling (unless you were one of those Wall Street ballers). Bleak times. ;) So also, regarding the "phono in", i.e. the RCA stereo ins on channels 9 and 10, find yourself an inexpensive adapter/adapter cable. That makes 5 full stereo channels at least. Anytime mixers give channel specs, this is always referring to the number of mono channels, not stereo channels. It's not a stereo tuner after all, it's a mixer. Normally one has 30-45 days to return something. Sorry if I missed it, but why couldn't you return it within such time. Certainly, you would have sorted that it wasn't for you with 30 days? If not, cut your loss and sell it on eBay, then get what you want at some point? And, yes. I'm complaining about your complaining. LOL :)

7:57 11/12 is just 11/12 A stereo inpujt with level and even panning. Sure, you can route your FX return there. It's perfectly suited for that, but you can also return it on 1/2 if you need to. Again, not a problem. You can route any stereo signal into 11/12. (A return channel just is an input).

I am looking for a device to use as a preamp for a Crown XLI1500 power amp that I will receive next week. Home audio preamps are ridiculously expensive, and many are not a good match for that power amp. So, all I want is a device to use for playback of music in a home audio system. I have read that the two mic preamps in this mixer are high quality, and that the 3 band EQ is also very good. I am just looking for something to allow me to tweak the sound of the power amp without spending on an overpriced home audio preamp. Is a mixer like this a good solution?

Seems this was just the wrong choice for you, which is too bad. The 100hz button is a high pass filter, it cuts off anything bellow 100 Hz. This may be in the same price ballpark as a lot of other mixers with similar number of input, but most of them don't have USB connectivity, or if they do, its just stereo/2 channel; this has 4 I/O USB channels!! This is a great mixer for solo, or small ensemble recording/mixing where 4 mics plus a couple stereo channels is all that.s needed. Lots of stereo inputs aren't its forte, and that definitely isn't what this little guy was designed to do. Also, its super easy just to make (or buy) some xlr to trs cables for your outs.

This is normal, a guitar (I'm assuming you mean a normal guitar that still has an output to record from, and not entirely acoustic?), anyhow, a guitar is a mono device. There's one cable to represent one audio channel. Record it into the computer, then, with whichever software you're doing, set it to mono, and it should make the left and right channel join so as to play the same sound on both the left and right channel.

Interesting, the Soundcraft Notepad 12FX runs the same price as the Yamaha 10XU (actually slightly more expensive), last I looked. It also has many more TRS in, as well as L/R TRS outs. As I said in the video, the Notepad 12FX just isn't suitable for me. Perhaps it's unfair of me to compare the layout of other brands, but I'm still learning about this stuff as I go. For what it's worth, the Soundcraft Notepad 12FX sounds fantastic. (Edited for clarity.)
@CaidicusProductions

I have figured out what it is that makes me dislike the Soundcraft design. One of the lines is dedicated to phono. On the Yamaha 10XU there's TRS above, and phono below. The Yamaha also has two L/R phono inputs on two lines, with TRS above that. And then the outputs are both XLR and TRS. It just feels like the Yamaha has a lot more in the way of connectivity combinations than the Soundcraft.

In fairness and as an alternative view, I much prefer having XLR outs. For live use XLR to XLR is much easier and sturdier when connecting to powered speakers for a live gigi situation. Here in the UK it is much easier and quicker to find an XLR to XLR cable than XLR to Jack 3/4 inch. But i do agree that having the option of both is very useful.

The effect is not at all good. When we use delay and reverb at the same time, the delay overrides reverb. In essence, the reverb is also delayed along with the delay. The reverb should be independent of the delay. No one seems to be talking about this. I hope Soundcarft will have the solution for it in the next version of its frameware.

There's a button on it that says (with a picture, not words) "When button pressed in, Stereo Headphones out, When button position unpressed, Mono Output". It's a two stage button, clicking in and clicking out, basically. So, I think what it means is, when it's in, the sound will come out of the headphone jack and when it's out, the sound will come out of the aux jack, only in mono. (ideal for a bass or guitar amp). Sounds pretty ideal for your situation.

Just plug it in. No power switch. I think a lot of people who use things like this have them plugged into a power switch that they just turn off and all their gear shuts down. A lot of pedals don't have power switched, either.

You’re complaining about the available number of inputs is totally common on most mixers that you’re going to look at that this price level. Maybe you don’t want RCA inputs, but this is usually based on mono source. I don’t even own this mixer, but this is really not a valid complaint.

It's valid in comparison to Yamaha mixers which support both XLR and trs outputs. Perhaps I wasn't clear enough in my video.

@@CaidicusProductions It’s a Hybrid or Combo XLR/TRS input. Newer Yamaha mixer models also have this. Maybe what you’re trying to point out is the individual or separate XLR and TRS input in a channel, like the old mixer models. You may have missed the details of this and the newer Yamaha or whatever brand of mixers, which are actually similar

You probably don't liked main outputs being XLR and not stereo jack. Personally, I preferred XLR instead of the stereo jack or the 1/4" because it louder or has the full range sound not like stereo jack or quarter. As I watched other reviews on this mixer, one thing I disliked is that there's no off/on power which in the long run will get shock and gone.
@Settii
@Settii 5 ай бұрын
It would be interesting if this were the case but in actuality XLR and TRS are different formats of the exact same signal configuration. There is no scientific evidence that has ever suggested that XLR produces louder or more full range sound that quarter inch TRS jacks. If someone doesn't like XLR outputs they can simply use a pair of XLR to TRS cables. Problem solved. It won't effect the sound.

Nice video and nice review! Recently i bought this mixer too and I'm totally amateur too... when i plug it into the pc everything goes as planned but i have some trouble with the effects. if i press the reverb effect, for example, i can't listen any reverb in my voice. is it me or it just doesn't work? i've checked the master effect volume, the channel effect volume and the aux master effect volume too.
@CaidicusProductions
@CaidicusProductions 5 жыл бұрын
Not sure what's causing that, but all I can think of is that you might be using the inputs on 11/12. If you plug something into those L/R stereo jack inputs, above the effects section, you might have issues with your effects. The other thing to note is, if you turn all effects on, you lose control of each effect and the mixer just does a "one size fits all" KTV style effect. Try plugging in only one thing to your mixer, on the left most inputs, then try the effects. Check to see if the blue light is blinking when you turn on the delay, etc. If it still doesn't work, you probably have a faulty unit. Good luck, mate.

Not the best idea to review something if you know nothing about it. If you are an amateur and have no idea what these knobs mean and you are too lazy for reading manual - just leave, don't push yourself. Horrible overview. It tells us more about your expertise level than about this mixer.

You are entitled to your opinion, just as I'm entitled to make videos. I had a look at your channel to see what you produce, and not a single one. Perhaps you could show me the right way to do it instead of just informing others on what they're doing wrong.

@@CaidicusProductions Exactly - I'm not trying to fool someone making videos without high level of expertise, that is why my channel is empty. @@MaximErased So, your point is only experts should review products? Amateurs like me can't share their thoughts about the products they buy? I mean, the title of the video is "Totally Amateur Review". You'd think that would be a pretty clear indication of my not trying to "fool someone" into believing I'm some sort of expert. I think you've just chosen to be offended by something and I'm your target today. Whatever is going on in your life to make you act this way, I hope things get better and you can find happier times.

@@CaidicusProductions I agree I was rude, Caid. Not the best of my qualities and I apologize for my manners. But I've been looking for a review of this mixer because I'm thinking about buying it. So I have read entire manual to simply understand what it is capable of, possibilities of routing. Let's be honest - you barely covered features of this mixer, you do not know about hum/HP filter, AUX output type and how it works, you do not even know that in audio world any MONO source of a signal is considered as INPUT. You have shown some very basic and obvious things. I am trying to say that it is not level of "review", as review it was not much helpful, that's it. And of course you have a right to make videos. As you can see I am not the only one who disliked it BUT I have arguments, just accept them and think about how to improve your reviews. Best regards, hope you will reconsider your way of making reviews.

@@MaximErased no worries brother, I'll keep learning as I go along. One thing I didn't mention in the review is that the sound is top notch. Once I learned how to work around the inputs, I have been using it without bias, without any distaste. The fact is, it has a great low soundfloor and the effects are perfect. It's a hard mixer to beat for the money.

@@CaidicusProductions Try not to be offended, he was being very polite and only trying to help. You have a great channel with lots of useful information, but in this particular video you offer a lot of misguided insights and uninformed opinions. You did preface the video with "Totally Amateur" in the title but people looking for information on this device will come here and listen to what you say regardless because you have a professional channel with good content, notwithstanding the disclaimer in the title. In the midst of researching the product alongside a half-a-dozen other videos yours is one of the more informative. The issue is that if you are perpetuating misinformation because of lack of knowledge or experience this would be bad for your viewers, and ultimately compromises the reputation that you have worked so hard to build with all your other quality content. It is better to do the work and perform the research and always put out your best...because you have a voice that thousands of people will continue to hear. 49K views as of this reply post...
