You wanted my compost tea recipe? You got it. Today I continue my 30 videos in 30 days challenge from Justin Rhodes by answering a KZbin critic and showing you HOW CRAZY I CAN COMPOST!
(Get my book Compost Everything: The Good Guide to Extreme Composting here: amzn.to/29nTcsl)
Since the compost tea changes every time, and is more of an anaerobic compost slop than anything else, it really doesn't matter what you put in it. This is extreme composting. Korean natural farming and JADAM organic farming use similar methods - including using urine as fertilizer. It works and will make your gardens very happy.

David, I think I did everything just like you showed us in the video. I laced up my shoes and tied them properly. I put all of that stuff you recommended into the container and added some water. I don't drink beer so I gave my neighbor a six-pack to prepare himself to do the deed but after he finished off the beer I had to help him over to whiz into the mixture. He was very nice about it and offered to help me with my gardening anytime. Do you have any suggestions as to which brew is best. For the garden, that is. I'm still confused about the shoes. You didn't specifically tell us to leave them on, but then, you didn't show us how to take them off either. I haven't removed mine for a week now and I find them pretty cumbersome in bed. Do I really have to leave them on my feet for the composting to take place? Couldn't I just place them near the compost container? I could leave my socks with them. They are pretty ripe by now. I asked my neighbor about it but he said he doesn't know anything about composting. He suggested I get some more large containers so that I would always have plenty of tea for my garden. He's going to help me out as much as he can.

So many different recipes so I won't go into mine. However, I will say, add some mint( any strain) . You can grow it yourself, its prolific and your not going to kill it by cutting it down. Wait for it to flower for that extra something. Cut it down, cut it up and throw it in your compost. It can supplement your "green" addage and it will help in any odor that you might have.

This is so similar to how I make my compost tea. I've been looking up different recipies for ideas on how to tweak my normal recipie, but all I could find was the version where people put "compost", molasses, and air bubblers in buckets. This video was awesome and gave me great ideas on what to add. Also, the plant that you added just before moringa, was that whats also knows as a Lead Tree? I have some of those in the yard, ever since I was a child we've called them "stinky bean trees"

Compost tea may smell and look the part, but vegetation requires a LOT of time to break down and release nutrients into the tea, particularly nitrogen. A couple of weeks or even months isn't long enough. Similar to compost, most of the nutrients are still locked up if you can recognize plant material in the tea, such as leaf structure, stems, grass, etc. You're better off forgoing tea making and instead putting the ingredients directly on the ground near your plants (chop and drop). The resulting mulch also helps to keep weeds down and your soil moist.

That’s exactly that I did today. Every thing that came from my kitchen or my garden got added. I even tore up an Amazon carton, straw, cow dung manure, wood chips and twigs too. It fermented perfect and all my plants got watered. All I did was added water and let it sit covered. Next time will add Epsom salts as you advised.

Just started this based on JADAM and your input. My brew will be ready in 8 more days. Can't wait to see the results. I brewed my in five gallon buckets. To keep smell under control I add Charcoal and Rock dust to the brew. So I kill two birds with one stone, I get brew and BioChar at the same time. It seems to work very well. One operation and two products. I am looking for larger barrel so I have or two brewers instead several 5 gallon buckets. Like you I really like the free aspect of this method. Been watching you for years as I am a Florida sand gardener. Many thanks

I've been making actively aerated vermicompost tea for over a year now and love it. I took the slurry at the bottom of the bucket from a batch of aavct, mixed some black kow in and let it sit in a closed 20ish gallon Rubbermaid bin for months. It was nice and thick without much odor. I decided to up my game and throw my lot in with taking the same bin and making a batch of your aenerobic tea. I had a pile of decaying squash vines grown in a melon pit and filled the bucket with that, some other plant material, and some, ahem, liquid nitrogen and water. I let that ferment for over a week sealed up in the bin and the stench is overpowering. I used a stick to pull out the vines and a storm of houseflies descended upon the rotting vines as if form thin air. You can smell it almost anywhere on my 10th acre lot in suburbia (sorry neighbors). I'm hoping a good afternoon thunderstorm followed by a good baking and drying in the Florida sun will take care of the smell, but I have a feeling I'll be digging a big melon pit to toss the vines and most likely the tea in as well.As they say in permaculture, it's not a mistake, just a gathering of information, but it is not something I'll be doing again in suburbia. Maybe I'll try it again on the back forty of my future farm, but never again in the city. So for now, I'll stick with melon pits and aavct. Thanks for all the good ideas and experimental gardening. I have truly learned so much.~Erin

Erin - it does smell amazing - but wow do the plants love it. One thing that helps is keeping it covered. As it gets older the extreme smell dissipates somewhat. I think it out when I water the corn and it's not too bad. Of course, I like cigars and limburger, so I may not be the most reliable guide on what's bearable and what isn't.

"but I'm reformed!" hilarious! Say, I have a few questions: 1.Would you consider compost tea and manure tea the same thing? 2.Have you considered foliar application of compost tea / a comparative test between foliar application and just on the roots? 3.How does this technique compare (volitilization of nitrogen, beneficial organisms added to soil, work input, time till "brew maturity", salinity, etc) with the brewing from already composted material style or the actively aerated style? 4.Do you suppose innoculating the brew with soil from the rhizosphere of a healthy individual of the species you will soon plant produce a super elixir to get the little guys a head start on establishing a robust root-soil system, thereby better nutrient availability and disease resistance? Or do you think the aquatic and anaerobic environment would kill off the soil ecology you put in?

I put some in a watering can and dilute it down then let it sit 24 hours. I just add more water to original can and maybe feed it more ingredients. Is this ok? Does it ever go bad? I did order your book but need to visit your website 😎🌻👩🏼‍🌾

I'm SO glad I saw this video .. it's exactly how I make my compost tea (and I'm not even Korean). I had been wondering whether to chop it all up first with some kind of mixer before watering my plants. I've been leaving the chunks in ... they break down over time.

you can blend it for quicker extraction, then strain it if you dont want chunks, throw those chunks back in compost or straight onto soil.
