I think Ajay made his best point right at the beginning of the episode. Daima as a narrative has absolutely zero stakes because we already know how it's going to end, so there should be more focus placed on the journey itself presenting something new and exciting, which is something that (according to Ajay) this episode succeeds at above all the others. I'm more on the side of Mark's argument where, I thought it was a good episode but it didn't move me like it clearly did Ajay. Calling it a waste of time, on the other hand, is unwarranted.

15:37 what did this series ever promise that wasn't this? If people went in expecting anything other than a limited adventure series with the goal of taking the series back to it's roots then that's just them hyping themselves up and getting disappointed. Did people really expect like SSJ4 or something in this series? The idea it'd be anything other than what it is is absurd, and anyone who expected that just wasn't paying attention or was wilfully deluding themselves in hope.

I wouldn't have had it as a very early episode since the one character beat it does progress is having Panzy and Bulma work together. It also has Bulma learn what the piece she couldn't fix on the ship was. Ideally, I think this episode should have happened immediately after they left Namek to travel to the second dragonball. This is the point where the plane started taking on a bunch of extra passengers and would have been a reasonable explanation for why they crashed. Making the crash there would have it be earlier in the exploration of the second demon world and would have also offered a chance to explain that the demon worlds are concentric. It would also give a chance to explain why this planet (and Namek) was a stand-alone orb. The third demon world was basically a giant plane, which explains why it felt same-ish wherever the party went. This is a giant ocean with planets floating above them, allowing for each stopping place to be a unique experience. That is a cool concept (and flows naturally from the explanation of where the plane's stone comes from).

The episode was fun and looked great but I agree that it sort of stopped the momentum in its tracks. People act like the first half of DB is a lot of adventures but besides Toei filler the only adventure focused arcs were Pilaf and Red Ribbon, and then just Namek for the Z half. And Daima is its own thing, but its also almost over so ignoring the larger story just feels weird at this point.

I don't think shitting on the earlier world building helps his argument selling this episode world building. This episode just felt like the earlier episodes with less story progression and better animation.
@johnathanscott418710 күн бұрын
Funny enough, I actually agreed with Ajay here. I think everyone that blindly yells about worldbuilding in early Daima is kind of missing the forest for the trees. Worldbuilding isn't just showing that things exist in your world, but how they interact in the narrative/world. Demon world 3 felt like Goku and friends flying over a world independent of them.
@barisaxman210 күн бұрын
@johnathanscott4187 I don't personally agree with that assessment of early Daima. Sure we move from location to location, but we learn from their interactions with the 3rd world that it is a bit of a slum/dive with the dingy bars they visit. They interact with the town where the villagers have been enslaved. They visit the little shop with the magical bugs. Unless you are specifically talking about a more magical fantasy type of world building, then sure. All we really learn from the episode is that giants exist here and we are told even bigger giants exist too.
@johnathanscott418710 күн бұрын
@@barisaxman2 The criticism with the giants is the main point. World building is fun when things are called back on. A throwaway line, observation, law/rule, etc should all be leading back to a central point or idea. One that should be referenced and called back upon later. Although Daima had a lot of interactions in the 3rd demon world, none of it seemed to go anywhere? The cities are bankrupt and in decay, not of concern. There’s a life force tax, Goku beats up the demon cops and that’s it. Random shop with magic and ships, we visit once and never again. Together, this stuff makes world building feel lackluster over all. Like it’s missing the sauce that should tie everything together and make the world alive and dynamic. At least with the giants, the episode solely focused on them, so there was some gravitas to the concept.

Now id compare that to this episode of daima which is also its own condensed episode that pushes the plot line. which unlike most previous episodes of daima felt more like an episode that was cut up into multiple smaller episodes. Also as Ajay said we get a world that is mysterious and introduces a race that most likely will show up later. I went in not just expecting an adventure like OG DB which still is my fav to this day, but I was hyped for it. But it's really mediocre at best. Barely anyones watching it or reacting to it. Some cool and funny moments but that's about it. The writing is really disappointing to me. Maybe part of the problem is TOO MANY characters onscreen that dillutes dialogue because you have to share a limited time and that's never a good thing. OG DB was exceptional because it was just Goku and 2 other characters at most sometimes less now you have what 8 characters together? In a 15 min episode or so. Yeah writing is gonna suffer for it. Instead of SSJ4 we got another SSJ3 and what looks like another ending with a fusion YAAAAAY so original. If you need transformations to get peoples attention you have failed as a writer. I want more filler episodes not just fights but they have to be written well. Toyotaro might also not be that person unfortunately. The only thing he's good for is edgy transformations that make little sense. At least Toriyama is able to write an adventure doubt Toyotaro can even sniff that.

I enjoyed this episode but lean more towards it being good yet middle of the road. The biggest issue is last episode saw the most major plot advancement of all three dragon balls now being collected with Gommah and Degesu becoming fully aware of Arinsu's plotting under their noses. Yet this episode ignores that and only has them try to cut off our heroes from getting to the first demon world in a very brief scene. Otherwise it's just shenanigans on the Mega planet, which while fun IMO don't see how this is better adventuring or world building than the earlier episodes? Specifically talking about King Kadahn and his followers as Ajay asked "what their point is" and i think its obviously that they're going to try and help our heroes defeat Gommah and his forces to overthrow his tyrannical rule as was their established goal, so they're absolutely going to become relevant to the plot again which I highly doubt the Mega people are.

Also I have zero hype for the ending knowing it's gonna be another fusion. And I fundamentallly dislike fusion. What were they thinking showing that scene smdh. That was a major spoiler. Sucks for me though. I would prefer if Piccolo Orange popped up and defeated thr enemy or Panzy went ultra princess or Bulma went Ultra Saggy Tits or something and got insane powerups that arent earned or made sense (not like DB hasn't done that lol).
@PalPlays10 күн бұрын
For a 20 episode series, I dislike how cutting this episode out changes nothing. The episode wasn't funny. It was also incredibly strange to go from seeing Vegeta go from turning SSJ3 to shaking in his boots looking at a giant child. The only thing I'll give the episode is that it was gorgeous. The atmospheric shots were delicious and the animation was stellar. Just weird to put an OVA here of all places.
@ryuhayabusa33028 күн бұрын
I'm really saddened that I don't enjoy Daima like I hoped I would. I can already predict that they'll end it with another fusion ugh. Anyone else feel disappointed ? OG DB is my favorite. I was happy about going back to an adventure even if majority don't care. Goku going UI in Super broke the internet but Daima barely gets any views sadly. The humor in Daima is so hit and miss (the Minotaur one was exceptional but then the poop jokes were so bad). The action scenes are always cool but then again DB is the GOAT in anime fights in that regard. I'm gonna say something many are going to hate me for, but I dont mean any disrespect. I am very grateful for Akira Toriyama. He is the reason anime is the way we love it today. A revolutionary man of his time, the godfather of anime. But with Super and now Daima... Both would be bottom ranked in the franchise. Both have cool moments funny moments but also a lot of bad moments. The writing is so outdated. I think Dragon Ball needs new blood. I'm not sure Toyotaro is that man going off his past. DB needs a modern writer. Someone that can write funny moments, write cool fight scenes, transformations that are earned, more filler moments that are written so well you like them as much as the big action scenes. Maybe even write wholesome romantic episodes of Chichi spending time with Goku. Take Spiderman for example he's the main character you know he will never die he's always there but decades later you have the animated ones and they're so well witten. Toriyama is writing DB with that same old mentality but without that magic. Hopefully im wrong about Toyotaro but I just don't have a great feeling about him.

He knew, he even commented about it once that he prefer different style od DB than most of its fans. Guys, there is a reason why NOTHING worked for him after DB. His genius was mixed with endless corrections from his editors. That's why it even worked. There's cool article in kanzenshuu about how early DB was almost cancelled cause only thing Akira wanted to write was characters goofing around. That's why after World Turnament we get RR arc, cause J-O-K-E-S. Honestly, I'm curious what Toei will cook without him now. I hope it won't be another 'memberberries' like with Freeza, SSJ1 (but blue) with Goku & Vegeta, Cell (but dumb), twin androids (but with capes) or SSJ2 (but grey) Gohan. Oh, there was Broly (but nice) and Turles but from future. So far we have Buu (but green) but Z material is at it's end so meaby, meaby some sparks of creativiti will born. @@piotrkarp9562 interesting take. …I’ve been thinking for a while now that Toriyama might have been something of a George Lucas type low-key. Some people have so much talent and great ideas, but just don’t know how to spin the ideas into something cohesive or pick out the right ones by themselves. In both cases I think they didn’t entirely understand what made their own creations work, because they both had benefitted from an editorial process that they no longer had access to. Their own success ultimately isolated them from the conditions they worked best in, and they became “geniuses” who were supposed to magically provide a new direction every time their respective franchises faltered-especially in Toriyama’s case. It was never fair, and it’s really not surprising that it never quite worked.

I was so sleepy in the middle of this episode 😴 in my opinion this is the worst episode I have ever seen in dragon ball (except gt bc nothing is worse than gt)

It was ultimately a nothing episode with very cool animation. I'm sorry Ajay, I know you enjoyed it a lot, and it's charming enough to make a lot of people enjoy some of its moments aswell, but for a series that yes, we already had zero stakes going into because we know it's a prequel to Battle of Gods and Super, to make us care *even less* about it after having gone already through the first half is, to me, fucking insane. Barely 20+ episodes in total and we're still getting episode 4 ~ 7 levels of "nothing is really happening in the grand scheme of things" at this point is absurd. They clearly did not know how the hell to fill time for the series as a whole. Not a well thought out series whatsoever.

Ajay critics the first episodes for being nothing towards the story line and then critics tagami 3 fight for not really adding to the story then likes an episode that does nothing for the story and has a nothing-story related fight just because of the animation lol Hypocrisy at its finest.
@AnimeAjay11 күн бұрын
Well that's just not even remotely representative of what I said. I enjoyed the Tamagami 3 fight, I just wished it was longer so the battle itself could feel like it had a meaningful ebb and flow to it aka real battle narrative. The overall plot of the episode is packed full of stuff and I have never once said that was my issue there. I said I liked this episode because it was an adventure episode that actually felt like an adventure and had no pretences of advancing the story. While it would have been great for this to tie in to the overarching story more meaningfully, we've seen time and time again that Daima rarely makes anything feel meaningful in the first place. To cast aside all pretence and just deliver a solid 25 minutes of fun adventure with top-tier visuals to boot is a better experience for me than mediocrity that just happens to move things along. There's no hypocrisy there - that's a perfectly sound take to have. Don't invent and label things just because you don't agree.

@ mate, you have argued in the past how fights that have no meaning to advance plots are lack luster and not good. You have also argued that side quest plot lines that don’t advance the plot are equally not good. None of the first set of episodes made any promise of advancing anything, it’s the same thing over and over again. Goku and the gang are on their way to collect more dragon balls and they encounter some set back (e.g., transportation, thieves, etc). It’s perfectly fine to like this episodes, I enjoyed it a lot. However, to pretend that those episodes promised something different than this one is hypocritical since no episode besides the big set up to fights (tamagamis) promise anything but just moving the gang from point a to point b. This episode does that too and only that. At what point do any of the previous episodes that you think are slow explicitly promise anything besides an adventure lol if it’s not an adventure you like that’s fine because it’s a subjective thing but to pretend this is any different besides subjective preferences is wild.

@@saldana787 That is categorically untrue, though. Inarguably so. Everything from episode 3 through to episode 12 has been about advancing the plot within the Demon World. Retrieving the ship is to advance the plot, retrieving the stolen Dragon Ball is to advance the plot. All these set pieces exist to tell a story and unveil the world through the lens of the heroes. This is why Tyson and Mark enjoy those episodes (as do I, to be clear!). Those are all in service of gaining the Dragon Balls and retrieving Dende. Episode 13 is different in that the events that occur there have absolutely nothing to do with the main characters beyond just buying time until they can leave. Its predominant goal is about showcasing a world completely disconnected from everything else, and that's why Mark and Tyson did not enjoy it. It is literally an inconsequential bottle episode. "Filler" as some people have uncharitably put it. For me, that was refreshing. It owes nothing to the plot, has no interest in that, and instead wants to showcase its world and atmosphere through a series of fun and engaging set pieces. If those set pieces don't work for you and you find the lack of meaningful progression frustrating, then I get that, but just wasn't the case for me. All that's wild is that you somehow are incapable of seeing the differences here. The episode literally would not have the reception it has were it not intrinsically different lol.

@@AnimeAjay "Those are all in service of gaining the Dragon Balls and retrieving Dende." this episode is the exact same thing. They need to get the ship going to do what exactly? Again, I've enjoyed all of Daima, this past episode included. But literally every episode is in service to gaining more dragon balls or recuing Dende. If it wasn't, they would just have a beach episode and call it quits or change the overall reason for the story telling. But they didn't. The gang still wants to fix the ship to get the last dargon ball and rescue Dende.

@@AnimeAjay you're coping dude, this was a bottle episode with no "adventure" to speak of. They were stuck in a singular place, something happened, they left.

Huh, another pod saying the plot is once again not going much of anywhere? Interesting... especially considering WEEKS ago I kept saying Daima has a plot progression problem because its SLOW and I got so much pushback. And yet here we are, another episode where once again, the progression comes to a halt...

Naaah, Ajay takes the dub here, The adventure aspect of daima is very interesting, and yes while they could have integrated a better plot point, the adventure aspect of it was really nice, imagine training with a giant... its just nice to know the demon realm isnt empty and there are thriving communities on it...... Ajay w,.... or at the very least i agree with Mark...
