One reason you are becoming a headbanger, and a fan of any other genre you never listened too before, is the fact you are actually listening to the lyrics. Many of the songs that are dismissed as just screaming, if you listen to the lyrics, or look them up if you need to, you find profound messages, it is just a different method of delivery

At it’s core the song is about the loss of a loved one and the struggle that follows. In grief it almost feels like you died as well and you stop living. For example “when she died, I should have cried and spared myself some pain” I never dealt with the loss and this is unresolved. “I will unlock my door and pass the cemetery gates” It’s time to find acceptance and live again.

This song (and a lot of metal songs) are deep and have so much meaning to them. There's such a misconception from those who don't listen to it that it's just screaming "devil music". Nothing could be further from the truth. Those who take the time to actually delve into it end up appreciating and loving it.. as it should be.. Rock on! \m/

Sure, but I'm not gonna listen to full on screamo like some bands I've heard. Because I can't understand those guys. LOVE metallica and this song and walk are the only pantera songs I've listened to. But if the singer doesn't get more guttural than this, then I'm fine.
@stephanieclark9849

@@NYC_Goody Full on screamo isn't metal in my opinion. It's a sub genre of it I guess since there's like a thousand categories now. I like the balance between the clean lyrics and some screams (slipknot for example) but I would never sit around and listen to some dude growling throughout an entire song, every song, or just screaming because he can. There's gotta be balance.

There's a pretty interesting backstory to this song. It's based on an actual friend's suicide and this song is their way of coping with that loss. There is so much raw emotion in this song, and the keening at the end is chilling.

This was their masterpiece. Musically, it's complex but still accessible enough for you to groove to it; it's vocally amazing; lyrically, it's very personal and vulnerable without being sappy. The song's almost 6 minutes long but it flies by because it doesn't drag at any point. It's perfect. Phil Anselmo (singer) was kinda like metal's Eminem, before there was an Eminem. He came into the spotlight with a lot of personal baggage and pain and worked it out over the years through his art. Artists like that grow up in public which is why their fans are so loyal -- you don't just love their music, you love them because you've gotten to know them through the albums and through the years.

What he was referring to in that line is committing suicide himself to go be with her. The song is about a close friend who committed suicide but they decided to change the song a little to portray the death being a girlfriend because the thought singing about their actual friend would have come across as cheesy. It’s a phenomenal song with so much emotion and meaning and beautiful instrumentals. One of the greatest songs of all time no question!

Since you don't think it's very heavy, maybe try "Slaughtered" next. :D Hail Kings! Cemetery Gates is about grief and moving past it. Back story, Phil lost two friends to suicide when he was younger. It was tough on him. He wanted to write a song about it, but he thought it would be disrespectful to write a song about his dead friends, and he also thought no one would want to hear it. He decided to write a song about loss focused on a guy who lost a girl who was his whole world because it would be more relatable and applicable to the general audience and therefore more universally cathartic for folks. It's about having the strength to continue living after a monumental loss (ie- unlock your doors and pass the cemetery gates, even though the loss left you incomplete, a man cut in half in this world).

This band changed my life. I wish you guys would have listened to the album version, as the music video cuts out over a minute of a really great intro with Phil singing (in a much lighter tone) a full verse and Dimebag doing wonderful things on guitar. If you ever react to This Love, the music video also cuts out parts that are on the album version, and if you do Floods, dont use the first video that comes up because there is a dumb skip in the middle of the guitar solo. Use the one from the actual Pantera page :)

Poor Amber looks scared before it started. RIP Dimebag and Vinny. They were brothers, guitar and drums respectfully. Dimebag was murdered on stage in the band he was in after Pantera, it was a Pantera fan that was pissed they broke up. Such a great band

Rob I just want you to know that I was put on to your channel when your boy Rome put you on to AC/DC thunderstruck. I knew you were a goner after that the rockers had you lol. When you brought Amber in that just sealed the deal for me to subscribe.

Pantera does have some laid back moments like this song... 'Hollow'... 'This love' ... 'Suicide note Pt. 1'... 'Floods'... But they are the best at letting Dimebag Darrell's guitar rip! 🤘🤘🔥(God, we Pantera fans miss him desperately! And now his brother Vinnie Paul on drums is gone too...R.I.P.😷) Headbanging Pantera songs - 'Mouth for War' ... 'Psycho holiday' ... 'Becoming' ... 'Cowboys from hell' ... 'Revolution is my name'...🎸🤘🔥🔥🔥

Our band played 100's of times at the Al Rosa Villa in Columbus OH in the late 70's to early 90's. I have never been back there after Dimebag was killed on stage. RIP Daryl!

Love that song. They hailed from Arlington TX, and the Abbott brothers are buried side by side. A fence and gate has been installed to keep fans from defacing the grave covers.

as an amateur musician i will try to explain this "dont pause solos" phrase. it's like you have a house, and then solo makes you travel around some random places they want to make you travel (you will imagine them, as if reading a book in which you imagine the people) around and then go back to home. in musical terms it normaly starts and ends in some concrete notes, based in theory, armonized stuff, scales etc etc. so is important to listen a solo from the beggining, as it normaly says in which place you are. like a table game with a house square and then a road and back to home square. they telling u which game is in the beggining

Got to see them open for Skid Row!😳 When they finished, most of the arena left! Either because we were wore out or because we knew no one could top them😈👍 R.I.P. the Abbott brothers💔

A lot of people are actually surprised that this counts as one of Pantera's softer ballads. Just proves that Phil as incredible vocal range. Unbelievably talented band.
