Totally worth It! NEW Paul Rubens 4th Generation Watercolors 36 Set Unboxing & Review

Today I am pleased to share the newest version of Paul Rubens watercolors. These are their 4th generation paints and we will compare them with their original pan version that I love.

The Paul Rubens 4th generation tube watercolors are currently available in 2 set sizes:

*They come out to less than $2.50 per 5ml tube with the 36 set being the most economical
Pros:
All strong and useful colors (no white)
Most colors are single pigment
They dry down in pans nicely and rewet well
All colors were fully mixed and consistent (no binder separation)
Gorgeous packaging
Very affordable
Finely milled with subtle granulation on the cobalt colors, french blue and Indian red. If you prefer not to have texture in your watercolor paints these are for you.
Nice dispersion (these contain ox-gall for flow according to my contact at Paul Rubens)
Cons:
Single replacement tubes are hard to get
Bottom line: I have no hesitation recommending this paint. It is clean and vibrant, flows well, and behaves as it should and all of the colors in the set are useful. If you can snag it for under $100 I think it is a tremendous value! Currently, the price is a steal!

Here is some history on n Prussian Blue, the paint maker Johann J. Diesbach mixed it in Berlin around 1706 (when it was capital of Prussia, before German unification in 1871) The pigment is believed to have been accidentally created when Diesbach used potash tainted with blood to create some red cochineal dye. (We 💙 Wikipedia). I took a course at Kremer Pigmente and we made Prussian Blue mixing the chemicals in a big glass beaker. So beautiful to paint when fresh!. Fascinating to see the liquid turn colours! I also learned that it is used as a medicine to cure some types of poisoning. Amazing, isn't it? As always, thanks for the video Lindsay. I never get tired of watching you swatch and chatter about paint.

@@nah5491 Yes, I went to their town (Aichstätten, in the South of Germany) to spend some time learning. Very remote and quaint village. I thought they'd be a huge factory but it is all very artisanal. Met Mr Kremer Sr. and Jr. They are both colour and pigment encyclopedias! The perfect place for a pigment nerd like me 🤓 🖌️

I really like the Paul Rubens watercolor pans (the pink tin) and also their fluorescent watercolors. I always wanted to try the tubes but they had disappeared from Amazon. Really excited to see these new ones now, and I will be sure to give them a try when they become available here. I would much prefer being able to buy individual colors though. Berlin Blue is another name for Prussian Blue. In Germany "Berlinerblau" is used interchangeably with "Preußischblau" (Prussian blue). If I recall correctly, Berlin Blue was the original name, as this pigment was first developed in Berlin. The name Prussian Blue was then given to it because the pigment has the same color as the old Prussian military uniforms.

I bought this set as my introductory tubes about three months ago based on this review and I love them! Except for the earth tones as noted in the review, but I was prepared for that. I recently tried the glitter paper - I think it's best used for illustration style painting or sumi - if you cover the entire paper with paint, yes you don't see much. But they were perfect for holiday cards to put a quick tree on!

I love perleyne maroon! It was my alizarin crimson substitute back when Dan Smith came out with it. I agree about the cobalts and cadmiums. They are wonderful! My favorite burnt Sienna is by Daler Rowney! It definitely is more reddish than some others I've tried and mixes beautifully with ultramarine! A lot of my paints are from the late 90s and 00s but still rewet beautifully!

I have two Paul Rubens pallets and mission gold tube set pure pigment that I haven't even painted with yet except to do swatches and a test painting . Do you suggest having a separate palette for each brand? I have a WN palette that I added paints in the middle section... Holbein, Daniel Smith, Sennelier. I'm a beginner... but it's been a long time since I painted... health issues... so I'm starting over! Started buying Da Vinci watercolor paint... I love convenience colors... no worries about trying to produce the same color again! I'm 70 and this has been a delightful experience these past 2 years. It depends on how much paint you have but for most artists I'd say no, put it all in one palette because they will all go together. Mine are separate because I do paint reviews.

I was painting last night with a friend and showed her a piece I did on the glitter paper where I didn't cover the whole area. I had forgotten about the glitter and was pleasantly surprised when I saw it sparkle in the light!

Hi Lindsay, I have a perylene marron from DALER-ROWNEY, PR 179, and I confirm it is more brownish. " dry blood" is a nice description, but it is still very vibrant, like an old red wine. One of my favorite color of all time ! Transparent and good for mixing. DALER-ROWNEY is a brand I appreciate a lot, but unfortunately it is not easyly available, at least in France... and their PB60 indanthrone blue is gorgeous, not dull at all !

The number 5 yellow…I love that color!!! Indian yellow I’m not sure. But it looks like emperor/imperial gold. Which I love. I rarely have the need for that color, but I have a beloved WnN tube in that shade and ❤. Beautiful color. If a pleut pretentious when used for clothing and garish for decor.

I totally agree with you about the cadmiums.. I kinda annoys me that everyone is against them. They are not the only toxic pigments and the danger is mostly for powder form. But even then it’s not nearly as dangerous as they are prostrating. I really really enjoy your content,thank you for all your hard work! I would love to see you review “mission gold white class” it is a bit expensive but it’s a wonderful option for people wanting to work with gouache from dry. And I think they definitely win the “hybrid” category. If you aren’t interested in the set…the white which happens to be sold separately in 100ml(3.4oz!) it is in a class of its own. If you check out a few videos on this product line you will see how it is intended to be used and I’ve tried it with all the other brands I own in the side by side format ….it’s amazing! It makes me want to start a KZbin channel just to get the word out lol.

I also like cadmiums. Not a problem in a pan or a tube. Plus, all pigments are dangerous in powder form, as they are not good to inhale. I find people use questionable materials without knowing (what's inside a cel phone? Does everyone read all the labels in all products?) And there's been an unnecessary fuzz about cadmiums or manganese. If handled with care, all colours are safe. Thanks for your mention of Mijello white class. I will check it out. Is it the one that comes in their palettes as mini tube?

Oh and I wanted to say the cadmium orange from white nights in the tube is literally almost fluorescent … actually that isn’t the right word … it’s like it has the light coming from within in I wish I had it as an oil paint!

I’ve found that I really enjoy their Mission Gold single pigment set, which is the most vibrant and economical tubes I’ve ever tried. I learned a lot today.....such as quin paints are staining, where paints are manufactured and how that might influence pigment choices, maybe these paints are related to BlokX, and that lemon yellow might be fugitive. I've paint painting watercolor for 9 years. Always learning new things.

Unfortunately, I have way too many sets of paints (I have the 48 pan set and the 24 full pan set from Paul Reuben). I just can't justify buying these tubes since I don't paint that much. I think about painting and I LOVE painting. But I wind up drawing and using the Derwent Inktense pencils more than anything else. I just love them so much! Maybe in the new year I'll get back into actual watercolor painting. That being said, I did put the 36 tube set in my wishlist. Like you said, they would be great to refill the 48 set. I hope you're feeling better!

I was able to get the 24 set of the 4th generation & great paints (made in Fl) and also use Da Vinci (artist grade) and Paul Reuben’s mixes great with them & not hard to re-wet as poured into pans! Ty for video showing there are good water colors out there (not just top 3) 🤗! When you pour them from the tube into pans (does leaving corners) without stirring will water collect under them? Ty.

The paints look good, and the set doesn't look bad overall (as much as I dislike sets). Perylene maroon can be quite variable, Daniel Smith has this dried-blood appearance, but some others are less brown.

I just received my Christmas present for myself I ordered the Mijello gold class Mission 24 set. I have really wanted to get some good single pigment paints for a while now. The price was great at $62 . Now after watching this I wonder if I should return then and get this set or the 24set of these paints. I know I got a lot more paint in the 15ml tubes but I doubt I'll use them up in this lifetime so that is not really an issue. I'm a little concerned about the flow - I knew that you and others had mentioned that in your review of the mission gold paints. I tend to do more wet on dry painting but that may be because my results weren't that great. I have upgraded my papers and tried different hot & cold press papers with some success. My real question is about oxgal (SP?). I've heard you say in several reviews that the non spread may be due to no oxgal, can oxgal be added to watercolor tube paint before you allow it to dry and would it help the paint flow? I would think it would be a very small quantity and there are very few colors that I use in wet washes - I have a few granulating colors that I really like to use for this now. Overall I think I will enjoy the mission golds but I would love your input. I do know that the decision is mine to make as you can;t possible know from this what type of painter I am and which would be best for me personally. I so appreciate all of your reviews and it's not often I spend this kind of money on paints. Thank You

I'd stick with the mission gold and buy some ox gall to put in your fresh water when you paint. amzn.to/3C5uFFd

Yes, you can add oxgall to your pan paint. Schmincke even has an ox gall pan (called O-Netz). Qor has synthetic ox gall in liquid form, with a dropper. You can add a couple of drops ox gall to the water cup and use in all the paints I would not put ox gall directly on the pan, as it will affect its performance later. If you have a cup with water and oxgall, you can pick up water from there and mix the colour in a palette without changing your pan. Good luck with the experimentation!

I'm starting to move away from granulating paints as you mentioned so these would be a great choice. I just wish you could get them individually easily.

These have more flow than mission gold. Transparent is similar. These feel a bit more western than misson gold. Both are great paints tho!

I am not going to buy this set if I get the funds for a paint purchase I will buy the new set from DaVinci! Denise Soden has curated a set of opaque watercolors! A new set of 12 wonderful opaque colors with 2 NEW COLORS that Denise has developed with DaVinci! This is very cool and they will have the half pan palette available today and tubes in the new year! Lindsay is the binder separation issue really important when it comes to the pains if you mix them up and give them a good stir will that not rectify the situation or is the separation actually affecting the quality of the paint? I was just wondering if you could explain to me.

It's not a big deal in older paint, it can happen but when a brand new paint has that issue I worry about the quality control and ingredients used as it should take some time for pigments to fall out if suspension. Especially if a tube becomes pressurized which may be because of spoilage. It could also be reussure from air mail. It's hard to tell and because of this I am hesitant to recommend a new paint with this issue.

Pv 42 is Quin pink in Daniel Smith line. I was so disappointed in the lukas line of paints. I purchased 12 tubes and ALL of them were chalky, so much so that they rubbed off the watercolor paper. I am glad to hear Jerry's refunded you, they did not refund me, and I sent the paints back. PB 28 is the color that white nights and turners use for thier cobalt turquoise/turners turquoise. It isn't the pigment, it is Lukas paint, they changed manufacturers a couple years ago and now suck! I was so upset ay Jerry's I try not to buy anything from them anymore!

@@thefrugalcrafter January 2021, I ordered them. I poured a pan of each and let them dry, like I do every paint. I swatched them on the same swatch cards I use for every other paint. I have never seen a student grade paint let alone a professional one that was as chalky as these. I contacted customer service and requested a return, I thought there was something wrong with the paint. They had me return them, stating they would test them and call me back. They did, stating the paint behaved perfectly and they gave it to an artist to use. He suggested that I should not buy the whole line before trying the paint. I had tried several colors of the old line, they were beautiful. Anyway, I never got the store credit.

Hey Lindsey, I'm wondering if their glitter paper isn't actually glitter but alum sizing? Paul Reubens is a Chinese brand if I remember correctly and I also do Chinese brush painting and the rice paper that is sized is sized with alum and has a glittery look to it. Almost like there are little clear pieces of glass sprinkled all over it that catch the light and shine so beautifully, but not loudly like actual pieces of glitter would create. Oh! And the glittery look of sized rive paper isn't done on purpose, that is just the way the paper looks when it has been sized with alum!

Wish I could get these & once you mentioned “paint separation” found many tubes of other student grade had just that issue & most looked & felt like chalk (even on 100% cotton paper) so one day I will try the 36 set!

I love the RUBENS glittery paper, but I’ve only seen the 20 sheet packages. That looks like a lot more! The orange pack is cold press and the lavender pack is the cold press.

My 24 set came in today & was only $60 with coupon! Must say am very pleased with them & have the pigment information on them & know got 4th generation as had the eye symbol not lil man with a hat! A bit afraid of putting them in pans as last kind turned so hard took me two days of soaking whole pallet in water & then had to use a spoon end to break up “rocks” & would the 4th generation of PR’s be ok if put in pallet as feel waste a lot using straight from the tube? Tysm for these great tutorials as mix colors and must know what’s been mixed in or just only one!

QUESTION: Good morning Lindsay! If you had to choose between the "Mission Gold" Pure Pigment and "Paul Rueben" Pure Pigment, which one would you choose? Thank you for your input.

Probably mission gold because the tubes are 3 larger if you are going for value. Quality wise you can't go wrong with either. The new Paul rubens flow more than mission gold and I do prefer that. Honestly you cant go wrong either way.

I had some issues with some previuos Paul Rubens that I received - the paint had separated in the tube...a little disappointing. But overall i love Paul Rubens products.

Do you have any recommendations to refill the pretty excellent pallete? I love the earth tones in that pallete And i agree i dont like orangey-red burnt sienna's. Any recommendations would be appreciated!

Will you please put togeather a "normal" 12 color palette....but use the BRAND you like best for each color. I E..... DS for ultramarine blue and WN pro for lemon yellow etc.

Honestly once you get to pro level all the brands are good. I have mixed brands in my portable painter but for every color I have there are at least 5 brands that are just as good.

I mistakenly ordered the Paul Ruben opaque watercolors. Too late to return them. Is there anything I can do ( add mediums) to make it more transparent and so it will stay in the pans?

Where did you see that PR179 is discontinued? I haven’t seen anything about that, in fact it’s what a lot of manufacturers have used to replace PR206. Perylene maroon PR179 can be manufactured anywhere from a yellowish red to a maroon or bordeaux. - WN used a similar redder tone as their replacement for PR206 in Permanent Alizarin Crimson. My other perylene maroons are much browner. Anyway, I got my set yesterday, at about 2$ a tube it’s a very good deal for some really nice paints! Cant wait to get them poured and dried.

I absolutely needed a swatching video after a day of technology frustrations! Now I'm nice and calm. 😊 Apparently Prussia's capital changed to Berlin in 1701 so maybe that's where the interchangeable name of the paint originates? 🤔 I love the greens and dark purples. 😊 Thanks for the tip about what's good to mix with viridian as it's currently a throughly neglected colour in my haul! 🤣 The crab painting is gorgeous. I love the colour scheme. 😊 I hope your voice held up and you're feeling OK. ❤️

On the tubes it say Weather resistance and then has a number of ***s. Do you know what the stars mean? I assume the more stars the better? That's my only complaint, not being able to find answers like this from the company itself.

They mean lightfastness, or how Pronto to fading they are. Usually the higher the stars the better. Brown is always good so I look at the rating there. If brown is 1 star than 2 star is the highest but if brown is 3 starts than 3 stars is best.
