About the "Bad Endings,no matter what" and everyday settings: It is common in japanese mythology, that you are 1. A random victim, everyone could stumble into a situation like this and 2. It is very difficult to get out of them. In a lot of Japanese Horror Mythos it comes down to luck, there is maybe a very specific order to do things in to come out unharmed - but basically impossible without prior knowledge and even when you know what to do, difficult to pull off. Western Horror usually seems to have more purpose as to why someone is targeted, like past wrong doings or something like that. That is one of the reasons why Japanese Horror is scary to us, everyday situations and a force that cant be explained or dealt with.

Japanese horror is a lot more about the horrific things that happen out of the blue, with no way to control it. In a way, it feels like a personification of freak accidents and natural disasters. You didn't get killed by an evil ghost because you did anything, but just because it was the wrong place at the wrong time. In the same way that finding out your family died in an earthquake or flood isn't because of any Western concept of "sin", but just the same kind of wrong place, wrong time misfortune.

While the animations are so bad as to break immersion in their earlier works, I think The Closing Shift hits the nail on the head with the animation. It feels like they've really found their style. The surreal animations really add to the fever-dream-like feel of the games, and the stupidly fast animations make good jumpscares that don't feel cheesed. Something about the hyper-realistic faces on low-poly models with possessed doll-style animation just really clicks for me. If they continue to improve the animations, I genuinely hope they never get too realistic. Right now, their games sit in the Uncanny Valley, which is the perfect place for them to be. I don't want them to leave it by making the animations _too_ good. The only other thing that needs improvement is how they handle endings. In a weird way, a lot of their stories feel like they'd be better without _any_ conclusion at all. Whether the baddie "gets" the player or leaves them, neither is as terrifying as if it was unknown whether we were really safe or not.

true story here. my mum had a boyfriend after my father died. he was very possessive and would go to great lengths to isolate my mother. after she left him some time in 2018/2019, he became obsessed with her even more so. noteworthy to mention that they lived in the same apartment complex, his door straight out of my mum's door. so yeah, he stalked her, got her fired by threatening her employeer and stuff like that. almost broke our family. End of the story was that he took way too much aspirin and unalived himself by blade. he was an alcoholic as well, and in his clear moments he was so afraid that i would hurt him in response to what he did to my mum, because it was manipulative and horrible, to the point that even moving wouldn't have helped. so yeah, he was sober when he died. wrote a cryptic, messy suicide note saying "thanks for letting me live a little while longer, but i gotta end it on my own terms" and that was it. found him decomposing in his apartment a couple of days later.

The character having to close shop in the ending of the first game might be more realistic than you give it credit for. The character (seems to be) renting a city apartment by themselves (expensive), and owns a car that they haven’t been taking care of (likely for financial reasons, as they are working a minimum wage job). Money appears to be very tight, and they likely cannot afford to lose that job without risking losing their apartment. Maybe I’m giving the game too much credit, but I feel the game was subtly justifying why the character stays to close up shop after finding out they could be in imminent danger-they’re financially trapped in that job.
@inplane99702 жыл бұрын
Considering how nobody wants to perform closing shifts for many reasons, the game depicts exactly what you described. Most of the time, finding another job isn't an option when many positions are already filled up and people don't have the networking skills to get better opportunities.
@ChaosRyan32 жыл бұрын
Adding to this, the fear of danger during night shifts is real, but something that isn't taken seriously on a professional level, swept under the rug as paranoia. So she can't bring this up to management and be taken seriously, and she wouldn't be able to explain to another employer that she left the position out of fear and have them understand. Therefore whether she is contracted for the night shifts specifically in a desperate financial state, where she is fooling herself into believing that it is just paranoia; or whether she is picking up the shifts specifically because she needs the extra money, accepting the risk to her safety because she has no other choice, it really is effective execution.
@Scarshadow6662 жыл бұрын

@@anomaly9156 Japan’s fictional media isn’t real life, only developmentally impaired people would take that stuff so seriously that they see things through that filter. If they haven’t had a chance to develop social skills with their family, they’ll still have school, if not school, then they’ll still have to work at some point, wont they? People still have fantasies, but that’s gaming, manga and media’s for, the culture in Japan is to be restrained and maintain self order, not to break it and start diminishing other people’s quality of life. Japan has a presumed guilty system and on top of that, they often put people under duress to admit guilt to something just to keep up the success rate stats. They also let off powerful companies, people and their friends and family all the time. As for some of the people who had enough evidence to be safely assumed as guilty, you should look up the extremely bad cases, it looks like Canada took over and sentenced them.

To me, the closing shift is about the horror of simply being a woman (or any vulnerable minority). I'm a trans woman. As a man, I never really worried. I could go to the sketchiest areas and felt like I could do whatever the fuck I wanted whenever the fuck I wanted. I try to keep that spirit as much as possible as my true self, but it's hard. I've lost my whole family. I've received multiple death threats with my address just for posting videos of me doing hobbies on my small Twitter. Worst of all, I was attacked by a man and ended up with a broken nose and 10 stitches. All in just 2 years. I thought I was going to die. He was yelling slurs at me and telling me he was going to kill me. All because he was interested in me and when I told him I was trans he felt confused and that made him angry. He just flipped out and was saying he's not a f***** and he's gonna kill me. It changed me. I carry a gun now. It's always within reach within 1 second. I've practiced my draw. I look over my shoulder every few seconds. I have horrible things running through my mind, hoping that I make it home unharmed again. The closing shift really resonated with me. To me, it represented the horror of simply living as a vulnerable minority. It was terrifying and made me cry, in a good way. Beautiful game.

You're probably wondering "why didn't a Blue Phantom ever invade?" Well, that's because they instinctively fear Father Masks, which fortunately all of the characters look like they're wearing.

I've played a few of these and appreciated the aesthetic and was usually into it for an hour or so but yeah, they often hit a wall with an absurd puzzle or finish off with a lame ending. Tons of potential though, hope they do wind up perfecting their formula. Hope you make a video like this covering Puppet Combo and some of the related Torture Star label games. They've been on fire lately. Or unrelated but probably the best low poly horror I've found this year, Nightmare of Decay.

I like puppet combo but chilla’s art games scare me in ways most other games can’t. Even the supernatural ones are grounded in the mundane, everyday life of people. And with most of their games- they have something meaningful to say. They tell real stories, about real people, who are trapped in their circumstances in one way or another. It’s a reminder of how scary the world already is.. and maybe as players- it’s a reminder for us to do better than those (NPCs) who fail the tragic protagonists of these games.

Wow. Idk if it was meant to be, but this first game is a WONDERFUL modern female horror (from my PoV!). Everything you're afraid of as a woman at work at night. One mistaken interaction spiraling into madness. Absolutely masterful. Super spooky and really got under my skin.

I love these games, I have the convenience store game and it is just so tense, I hope they make more and even bigger games. Like make a scary game that is very long and shows some of the everyday things you do in Japan or thing that are annoying, it just adds to the experience but, I want to see/play more.
@krybyh Жыл бұрын
i'm pretty sure the game made it very clear, that the stalker would r-word the protagonist in all three endings. i would even say that it's unlikely he murdered her. since he seemed to "love" her. i'm putting that in qoutes because he's clearly just obsessed with a stranger. maybe he projects someone else onto the protagonist, maybe it's something else. but i'm very sure he r-worded her in all three endings.

I love paranormal shit in video games, but u gotta love the horror that comes with a situation that could perfectly take place in the real World. It brings a special vibe Ps: the number 4 is pronounced like death in Japanese btw. That's why it is showed in the tv while the manager is dead
@placefantasy18212 жыл бұрын
The caregiver is so hecking cool and it really gave me Wii grudge vibes. I have been chasing that level of horror for YEARS and it feels like it reaches close to that same level for sure. The girl stayed to end her shift, not because it's horror, but because she's Japanese. It would potentially be a serious infraction, the work culture can be rough, especially for a woman.

To those wondering about the number 4 on the tv screen in the shed, the number four sounds like the word "Death" in multiple Asian languages, including dialects of Japanese. It's like 13 in English, except without the ambiguity of just generic bad luck.

@the99999th2 жыл бұрын
altough chilla's art put their own spin on things, their work was heavily inspired by Puppet Combo, some of their games are almost identical, the only difference is that Puppet Combo goes for slasher killers while Chilla's art uses japanese ghosts as protagonists, maybe you could also present Puppet Combo on this channels, as his games are also very unique

In the first game the main character made the worst mistake ever. Always double tap. Pick up the brick again, finish the job. In the second one I don't think the old man was a ghost. I think this is implying that as they visit the wifes grave she is now haunting him again.

I was wondering why you were selling the devs as a high end secret triple a game devs in the intro. Literally their first couple of games were just copies of other games like Aka Manto (primarily puppetcombo, but also other small horror games) but yeah, they have improved a decent amount since then but have a lot to improve overall, which is honestly a great thing.

Chilla’s Art got so much potential to make good horror games. It’s a shame they refuse to fix 2 of their major flaws: the janky animation and publishing way too many unpolished games instead of taking their time.

cmonnn you cant say "the models and animations arent their specialty" with that tone, the old timey ps2like unpolished graphics and flat faces are what makes the characters unnerving i feel like its more of an artistic choice than anything. its about the atmosphere not how pretty the models are. if they were carefully sculpted like in an AAA game it would lose the scare factor
