I love a good Omnigamer-top 50, have to say this is by far the most eclectic list I've come across in over a decade. I'm impressed! Thematic games, Heavy Euros, luck-heavy games, war games, dexterity, co-ops, abstracts, duelers, Pax, you've got it all. Also kudos on the succinct overviews with game pictures, well done all around.

Thanks so much, Tyler! That is very nice of you to say. It is refreshing to encounter someone who understands board games and realizes not every game on this list is a Euro. 😀I'm definitely an omnigamer, as I play with so many different types of gamers, from kids to friends to heavy gamers, and I appreciate a good design regardless of style. That said, my wheelhouse is medium to heavy strategy games, which is reflected in the list. Once I go to Top 100, I think the variety will really start to show. What are some of your favorite games? Any that didn't make my list? Thanks so much for checking out the video!

Came from BGG because I hardly ever see This War of Mine as high on these lists! It's definitely heavy if you're not in the mind space for it, but my partner and I have had such great philosophical experiences and conversations around the game. I wish Concordia was a deck builder instead of what it actually is. Having a limited hand size would greatly reduce the AP that this game otherwise induces in people. Also great job on fitting a top 50 into 20 minutes. I put it on 2x and cruised through it!
@TotallyTabled2 жыл бұрын
Interesting. Since the cards are mostly better versions of the regular actions, I haven't found AP to be a problem. But I guess I could see it. Thanks for watching!
@helxis2 жыл бұрын
@@TotallyTabled Concordia is notorious for its AP. Hand a given AP player a stack of 20 cards and then say "now efficiently plan out the absolute best order to execute these in, and reassess that order every turn". It's a lot. For Concordia to work at all, you need players that are willing to just play and not think too much.
@TotallyTabled2 жыл бұрын
@@helxis That makes sense. I must not have played it with AP players, and I mostly play Concordia 2 player anyway, so it is not something I've experienced in others or myself. I wonder how much the game would change if you gave everyone a hand of 4 or 5 cards. Interesting idea.

"Space Aces: TNG (The New Guidebook)" is a solo RPG. To me it was designed in such a clever way that you basically can play a wide variety of adventures. Brass: Birmingham I have not played -- I've only played original Brass and Brass: Lancashire. Nations is great, but in streamlining TTA I felt it lost quite a bit of the epic plate-spinning civ anxiety that I crave. I just love the way TTA fits together, from the drafting to the action points to the events. But Nations definitely has its place and time and I'd happily play it anytime. Escape Plan is fun. Maybe top 100, but I haven't made that list yet! Thanks!

@TotallyTabled Жыл бұрын
I have played Frostpunk but it was after making this video. In fact, I have made full playthroughs of all three games on my channel. You should check them out. They are some of the best videos I've made, in my opinion. 😁I feel like the three games compliment each other, rather than any one of them replacing the others. Robinson Crusoe is still my favorite overall. You are right that Frostpunk borrows heavily from RC and expands from it. RC is the more streamlined and flexible system, able to tell a greater variety of stories in a quicker playtime without having to resort to paragraphs of text. This War of Mine is full story and experience, super dark and immersive and epic. It absolutely nails a very specific experience basically unlike any other game I've played. Frostpunk is in the middle with a focus on city building and morale management, resource management, etc. A great strategy game with a healthy and entertaining dose of story. I love it and it will be high on my top games of all time list when I make it again this year. Sorry for the ramble, but I could talk about those three games all day! It vaguely refers to a style of strategy game where players more indirectly compete over a management puzzle, rather than directly fight with each other. Euros often use victory points, resource management, and various action point systems to create efficiency puzzles. "Weight" is an abstract measure of the mental load required to play a game well - so complexity of rules, strategic depth, range of options on turn, game length, etc. Medium and heavy weight games require some prior gaming experience to enjoy, as well as the desire to invest the mental load to play. But, again, these are not concrete terms. Thanks for watching!

@@TotallyTabled I think you explained what a Euro game is really well!

Thanks, James. I tend to have my own personal definition for these things which are probably not technically accurate or official. Most games defy neat classification these days, which is nice to see. But it means we probably need more accurate language. Thanks for watching!

Your list seems very euro heavy and focuses on newer games. I imagine that you don’t have any sort of historical perspective to draw from. For example, one of my favorites is Cosmic Encounters. Another is Lords of Waterdeep. That’s not to say that some new games wouldn’t make my list, like Space Station Phoenix and Galaxy Hunters. I guess we all have our biases though. In case you haven’t figured it out, I love anything with a sci fi theme, which excludes most euros for me.

I always thought GWT to be out of our comfort zone but your series of playthroughs convinced me otherwise! Just started playing the digital version of TTA & it's great as well :)
@TotallyTabled2 жыл бұрын
GWT is rough at first, but once it clicks it really flows. Your choices each turn are really limited, so it is easier to pick actions. And you can start by focusing on a few actions, like getting coyboys and new cows, and you can do quite well. It is also on Board Game Arena. Thanks for watching!

My definition of worker placement is probably not as broad as yours, so I count about 15 WP in the top 50, with many of those being hybrids. It is definitely a favorite of mine. Thanks for watching.

Scythe is a great design that I enjoy. Hybrid games aren't really in my wheelhouse, which is why it isn't in my personal top 50. It would probably be top 100 for me, but I totally understand why it is so popular. Thanks for watching!

@TotallyTabled well, most people, at least my friend/family circle, prefer games that are quick to play and easy to learn. They tend to go with classic games like Uno, Sorry, or a deck of cards. I am trying to introduce more games to them but often if I mention that the game has a long rule book or takes longer than an hour, then they are often turned off by the idea since people have different tastes and time constraints. Plus game nights are rare because they're hard to organize and everyone is competitive so campaign and co-op games are out of the question. I really want to get into Nemisis because like you said, it is a secret identity/social deduction game that is akin to the Alien Franchise but due to the price tag and the fact it takes over an hour to play, it will be a hard sell to my family.

I've been playing board games since I played the first edition of Dungeon back in the 70's. Never been a fan of Euro games and not a fan of worker placement games. Not a big competitive person either. Out of my 100 or so games Mage Knight is still number one. No game I've played has come close to the variety and replayability of it,and yes I don't only play it solo. Lol. Star Trek Frontiers would be next but that might be a bit of a cheat so I'd pick Star Trek Fleet Captains. I like that you can play the game without ever getting into combat. Interesting game. Return To Dark Tower would be next especially with the expansion. I played the original and this one is world's better while still being true to the original. Gloomhaven is there although I prefer the main game to the streamlined Jaws. Sword And Sorcery I really love. Love that you level up as you play and it's a really epic game with some expansions. Speaking of that I still love and play Descent 2nd edition. I have a lot of the expansions so that really makes it as big as Gloomhaven in some ways. Really love playing with 4 people. Lord Of The Rings Journeys in Middle Earth is great as well. Possibly the best app driven game ,I just like the card mechanic better than Mansions Of Madness. As a party game Star Trek Panic is a lot of fun. Gets really tough with more people and a 6 player game can get pretty crazy. And for a dexterity game I actually really like Ice Cool. My niece really enjoys it and knocking penguins around with 4 people is pretty challenging. I like Arkham Horror LCG but as with most Arkham games the fun dies out at times and gets replaced with frustration. Not nearly as bad as Arkham Horror 2nd edition though. Like Shut Up and Sit Down said,that game feels more like work while beating your head against a wall at the same time.

Why Troyes and not Black Angel?
@TotallyTabled Жыл бұрын
Troyes is one of the times when I prefer the streamlined and focused version. It fits together in a nice, tight package. Black Angel feels a bit sprawling and bloated. I like it and I want to explore it solo, as I've mostly played 2-players if memory serves. But Troyes really sings for me. Thanks for watching.

How do you play a board game solo ?
@TotallyTabled Жыл бұрын
I've got 60 solo playthroughs that will answer that question. Many, if not most, new board games have both solo and multiplayer modes, due to the growing popularity of solo gaming. These are the games I tend to feature on the channel, but I have played through a few solo only games as well. Thanks for watching!

I came here to get ideas because I want to get into table top gaming. But I left pretty confused. Terms like 'worker placement game' or 'Euro feel' don't mean anything to me. Is there a video explaining this all? Also the throwing of chips and parts was throwing me off. At some points it seemed like it was part of the game but you probably did it to make the video more interesting? All in all this video was not as helpful as I hoped it would be.
@TotallyTabled Жыл бұрын
Welcome to the channel. I'll try to help, if I can. Unfortunately, my favorite games are not going to be the best games for someone starting out. I suggest you watch my Top 10 Simple Solo Games list here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hqaoZHeLqrh5l8k. I would also suggest watching my full playthroughs of any game that looks interesting. These videos will give you much more information. My recommendations would be: Lost Expedition, Cascadia, Cartographers, Canvas, Marvel United, Creature Comforts, Tiny Towns, Cafe, Warps Edge, Maquis, Rove, Resist, Final Girl, and The Bloody Inn. These playthroughs will really show a lot of different mechanisms and give you an idea of the feel of modern board games. Hopefully something will look interesting. Good luck and I am happy to answer any questions you might have!
