I consider myself a sprinter and at 15 years of age and at 5 foot 6 inches, I can run the 100m in 13 flat and 200m in 26.5, decent for my size and level I compete and train at. That being said about the 400m, I am also a decent distance runner being able to run the 800m in 2:35. The longer the distance doesn't always mean being more difficult. Although I'm not an insane runner like other people or Usain at his age and especially his massive height but still quite competitive, training for 400m is an absolute killer and I don't even know my PB in it as I never do it as it is out of my capabilities and I don't train for it. Bolt however chose well to focus on 100m and 200m, more people enjoy it both as spectators and running it as amateurs as it is easier and catches more attention. 100m is the holy grail of athletics if you win it at the Olympics and hold the WR.

It's either psichological thing or due to lactic acid buildup or both. You have to train as 400m/800m athlete to be able to push till the finish line on 400m and not break the technique.

At that time he was still aiming to break his 100m & 200m WRs. He stated several times that he wanted to run below 9.5 and 19.00 in the 100m & 200m races respectively. To improve on his already seemingly unbeatable world records, it's unquestionable that he'd have to focus on those events exclusively, especially as he aged. It's not as though he knew he'd never break his WRs in competition again (although he & Jamaica did break the 4x100m record again). If he somehow did know that, maybe he would've switched events then, but he didn't. So, he didn't. Even if he did, the 400m success we're imagining for was far from guaranteed. Also, there's an argument about what would've been more legendary: Winning the Triple-Triple (3 gold medals in 3 different Olympics), or having the Triple Crown in sprinting WRs (100m, 200m, 400m). The dominance over time that the Triple-Triple showcases is unprecedented. However, on the other hand, the Triple Crown would've cemented him not only as the greatest sprinter to have ever lived, but (most likely) the greatest sprinter that will ever live. Many already argue that he is that, but it'd be more concrete in that scenario. Either way, he's a legend, but which is greater? I'm favoring the Triple Crown but I couldn't know unless I experienced it.

Bolt had superior genetics above even Michael Johnson or Wayde to be a Legend in the 400m. He just lacked the discipline and motivation to want to train for the event because it proved far more difficult when it came to training. For a 16 year old with capabilities of running a sub 44 split, given his height as well that had gave him strides to catch anyone, he would have been running nearly low 44s had he taken the event seriously. Just remember, he didn’t take T&F serious until nearly 2007. Beforehand, he would always mess around so much in practice, not warm up properly and only show up once his event was close to starting because he knew he could torch the competition. Those 19.93s as a 17 year old were nearly Gold medal times even in the pros. Had he focused on the 400m as a youth towards his pro years how he did in the 100m/200m, we’d be seeing low 43s and sub even sub 43s consistently by the time he turned 21. Given his stride lengths, speed and stamina, he would have been miles ahead of the competition. Jeremy Wariner, LaShawn Merritt, & Kirani James would not have been able to touch him in those years.

@VeridicusMaximus3 жыл бұрын
@@Heat_ts7 Because you can't just linearly extrapolate speed into endurance. 300m is about the max for sprinters before other physiological aspect of the body take over. The fact that he was grimacing at 300m means he would have died a horrible death before finishing the last 100 in a 400m race at that pace. And just because you slow the pace of your sprint, say by .50, does not mean that your endurance improves necessarily when you hit that 301m mark and need to go for another 100m. Bolt's physical maturity at 16 was way ahead of others his age and that is why he was such a beast so young. He hardly grew any more after that and only gained muscle because he started to concentrate on the 100/200. If you look at many greats in the 400m when they have run awesome times many of them never grimaced after passing 400 meters which shows their great speed endurance. Bolt was miles from this type of endurance and frankly I doubt he would have ever got to run low 43s. A good example can be seen with Jeremy Wariner's 43.50 run in Stockholm. Look at the fact that he was not breathing that hard after this run and looked like he could have gone another 100m - Bolt looking worse at 300m shows me he was way behind in what it takes to maintain speed in that crucial 100m. Unless you have some serious genetics for lactate metabolism at this pace I don't care if you ran the 100m in 9 flat it does not translate to anything endurance wise.
@Heat_ts73 жыл бұрын
@@VeridicusMaximus you have to take into account considering a 400 runner going 44s and 43s is years in the making as well on strategizing their race in practice such as knowing how fast to hit their marks during those runs. The pacing, relaxing and having enough to floor every bit they have down the final stretch. Bolt definitely didn’t train for it (400m) after 2007 most likely. The closest we have of someone who was ideally like that was Michael Johnson, considering the speed he possessed which was why he was able to run consistent 43s, but put someone who can go beyond those 200m times like Bolt who (if he did) specialized in the 400 instead (not taking away his 9.58 either) and we could see sub 43 because of how much strides he can cover. It’s really years in the making combining with those genetics and hard work putting into it. But I guess we’ll never know 🤷🏻♂️
@VeridicusMaximus3 жыл бұрын
@@Heat_ts7 No doubt he would have been a sub 44 guy if trained but beyond that I have my doubts. Just because he was the fastest 100/200 guy I don't see that factoring in much beyond a sub 44. There are always trade offs with speed/endurance/stride length/etc. A lot people just assume fastest at 100/200 means that if they just trained then they would be the fastest at 400 too. But we could say the same about the 800. The same people say that about 400m runners being the best at 800 if they just trained for it. But as history shows it does not work like that. That said Bolt would have been a definite contender and medalist as well - I'm sure. But that is far from this videos claims about a sub-43 based off of his 100/200/300 times. Most of the 100/200 specialist have the basic speed to run sub-44 but that is not the problem it is their ability to maintain speed (which is a genetic metabolism issue) in that last 100m. And training is not always the answer - it's physiological - and it is physiological trade offs. There is a balance and personally WVN has the sweet spot not Bolt IMHO!

The secret of Usain Bolt's phenomenal success must have been primarily down to his natural physique - the perfect design for sprinting, but added to that, his champion like mentality, and strength of character. After all, he was/is human like the rest of us: ultimately, there would have been good days and bad days. Racing against drug cheats would have kept him 'on his toes', but he showed them all 'a clean pair of heels'.

It is an honour to have witnessed Usain in his prime. I was told he never ran 1 mile or further, which I find surprising as a former amateur sprinter. As a child I ran any time I had to go any distance on foot and thought little about it. I remember the euphoria of breaking the pain barrier and the feeling of invincibility.

The problem for about is that we will never know how fast he could have run in any event because he was head and shoulders faster than his closest competitor during almost his entire career especially during the height of his career, so unfortunately for us he was never pushed to the finish line and he will never know what his best time could have been either! But it was fun to watch him destroy his competitors.

I think Bolt could have taken the 43 seconds barrier to pieces if he'd taken up the 400. I genuinely believe that a time of around 42.5 would have been a distinct possibility. And, I think that's a fairly conservative figure. Looking at how he demolished an already mind blowing record of Johnson's in the 200, it seems perfectly feasible that 42.5 could possibly have been well within his capability. I know we'll never know, but what a privilege it was for us who actually got to see his ability and hard work (and, of course, results) in the shorter events. Total legend of the sport!
