Robert Emmiyan was my inspiration in my long jumping years: as I didn't have massive speed (only once I did I run sub-13 seconds on the 100m), I always strived to stay in the air for as long as I could manage. I remember putting a couple of hurdles over the sand pit and the high jump bar across them to work on that (before I got myself a coach who steered me towards less antisocial forms of training...). Got a few county titles with that...

I think it’s money. in other words sponsorship is very hard to come by for jumping. Look at Running, all distances , recently long distance , it’s workable . Ppl actually run or could run if they want ….hence the shoes, shorts , singlets, t-shirts, caps, sleeves, nutrition …etc. Some sports just naturally wait for generational talents.

There must be some upper limit to human ability. We may be at or near those limits in many events. It may be that the limit was approached sooner in the long jump than other events. Of course I'm sure people thought the same way back in 1968.

That earthquake, which killed several members of his family, including his father, was devastating to him, and reportedly affected his athletic performance (for the worse, btw). That indeed happened to him “later in life”, in fact, a year and a half after his greatest jump, when he was 23 years old. Had it not happened, who knows how much longer his career could have lasted, or how much farther he might have jumped?

Robert Emmiyan is only 5'10", while Bob Beamon is 6'3"; I think this has alot to do with the difference in the length of their jumps. What distance would Robert Emmiyan be jumping with an additional 5" in stature?
@Dave-lr2wo
@Dave-lr2wo Жыл бұрын
It's about 3.5 inches. You can calculate this using projectile motion dynamics with inputs for initial velocity, angle of launch, and initial height. What you are solving for is the distance traveled for an object falling from two different heights. There's one thing that does not change in the long jump, and that is that the ground is always at ground level! Height of center of mass (COM) at takeoff is one of the biggest factors in long jumping at the elite level. The parabola is a function of that height and the takeoff angle. Think essentially of the slightly longer time it takes for a ball to drop off a table if the table is two different heights. Now consider both tables moving at the same speed horizontally. When the shorter table's ball lands, the taller table's ball is still travelling in air. More briefly, a taller athlete starts at a higher point and all athletes fall to the same level. There's zero doubt to me that Emmiyan would have been the likely WR holder if he was above 6' tall. Now think about a jumper with Usain's speed and height of COM...!

Carl Lewis should have had that world record! He had jumps disallowed. He dominated this event perhaps as long as anyone else. He was by far the most consistent long jumper. Inches makes world records. Had he gone to Mexico City during his peak to break the world record, he might well have! Had he focused only on long jumping at his peak like the other three names on the 29 foot club he again may well have broken the world record. I still believe that Carl Lewis never received the respect he deserved for his track and field achievements. He was a twice daily n a century athlete. Other than Jesse Owens, no one else has dominated long jump and the sprints in the last 100 years.

There is not nearly enough emphasis placed on Landing in the long jump. I took my daughter to a college camp and they showed her the proper form but the entire work on her Landing took about 10 minutes and then they moved on. I can show you 20 extremely long jumps from Carl Lewis where he landed with his butt in the sand nearly a foot behind his feet and he almost never landed to where his furthest back point would be equivalent to where his heels should have hit. It's an insanely difficult balance to achieve but so many of the cycle jumpers don't even come close to achieving the balance between your feet being too far out in front of you or landing prematurely. You know where you can see it? Look at this job and then look at Bob Beamon's jump and you'll see someone with an absolutely perfect landing where he couldn't have gotten another inch out of his form and then you think about what would have happened if he was just six to eight inches off and we would never be talking about this jump

Another good video. Short, complete, and to the point. QUESTION: Can you include feet and inches? Plenty of us SAE guys are former T&F athletes and current track junkies. Adding SAE terms makes our sport a little less obscure for the Americans in your audience. BTW, for anyone interested, the hangtime of 0.98 sec indicates a vertical leap of 1.176M or 3'ft10 inches (probably a little lower, as pit is almost always lower than runway...)

I think out of those 3, the 100m one is probably the hardest to break. We have seen some athletes coming close to Bolt's time at the 200 like Yohan Blake and Noah Lyles, and jumpers like Juan Miguel Echevarria and Pedroso showed they had the talent to break the WR under the right conditions. But the 9:58? Barely any athlete can even go below 9.8 nowadays, much less below 9.6

@@Kig_Ama Pedroso jumped 8.96 but his mark was annulled because a man was standing in front of the device used to measure wind. Pedroso also had a couple of very large fouls including one in Salamanca that went well above 9m. Echevarria also jumped 8.91 with wind assistance. The record has not been broken but there have been athletes since then who showed they had the talent to challenge it. Same thing with the 200m. But the 100m? Everyone is so far away from Bolt that I don't think that record will be broken within the next 30 years.

Why weren't the other competitors breaking at the very least their own PBs? Cos they were not, not by a long shot. Beamon had leaped post WR in training before and Emmiyan leapt quite consistently well at every altitude. They were just so good. Height from sea level does nothing to tarnish their feats. Nobody else came close in the same conditions, in Beamon's case not even current world record holders who were out for the gold. Don't forget that Ter-Ovanesyan had jumped 8.50 pre-Mexico in training.

@sy8ren
@sy8ren Жыл бұрын
The part about the hang time is complete pseudoscience. First of all, how can you even compare both jumps ? I assume Jordan landed on his feet, what if he tucked in his legs and fell on his ass ? That would have added more time in the air. Emmiyan didn't land straight up so he gained some time there. You can't compare hang time without proper rules. And second, the hang time in the long jump really doesn't change much, whether you jump 5m or 7m or 9m, your hang time will be approximately the same. The only difference is the speed at wich you are flying through the air. Basically every long jumper, from beginner to pro spends about the same time in the air, obviously there are some differences based on height and speed etc...but in general, it really doens't change much. And it doesn't really matter either, you can spend more time in the air and jump less far if you jump too high.
@jackstraw3934

Well maybe but….there is the theory that, along with him jumping at altitude (8000 feet), prior to Beamon’s record the air was ionized due to a thunderstorm that arrived minutes after his record jump, thus electrifying the atmosphere. That said, I still think it’s one of the greatest athletic performances in all of sport. (Source: “The Perfect Jump” -Dick Schaap)

Seems so strange to be seeing someone jumping that far without using a hitch-kick. The hang technique seems so antiquated, almost like watching a high jumper use the "Western roll".

Pretty bad to not even mention Ivan Pedroso who jumped a legal 8.96m Why isnt Pedroso the WR holder? Wind was legal, jump was legal on the board... Prize for breaking a world record that day was a brand new car.... corruption at its peak. But its a legal jump with legal conditions so how this guy making the videos doesnt know this or mention him, its a really lazy bit of research and disrespectful to the real WR holder, even Mike Powell accepts that Ivan jumped further and has said it in interviews.

No it doesn’t count because Ivan’s record was obstructed because a idiot was standing in front of the wind gauge that’s why it’s not a WR
