Another reason why the design was changed can be seen at 3:46. Many of the throws with the old design were landing in a flat angle and then gliding forwards in the ground which put the officials and other athletes in danger. The balance point of newer javelin design meant that the javelins are now sticking to the ground on landing.
@Psi-Storm

With the javelin more top heavy, they probably have to toss them in an higher angle too, meaning they have a longer travel time (higher energy demand) for the same distance.

Putting our time and effort in activities and investments that will yield a profitable return in the future is what we should be aiming for. Success depends on the actions or steps you take to achieve it. Show me a man without investment and I'll tell you how long it takes to go bankrupt. Investing creates a safe haven for the future. Plus just being worried of my trailing legs knee clipping the hurdle meant that it was hard to jump at a perfect height so I was as fast as I could be over the hurdle. I’d always jump too high but not in a way that it was just a jump up and over but in a way that I still jumped over the hurdle forward and you’d need to slow down footage of me jumping g hurdle to see that I could go lower

I mean, in effect, you could say that the world record will never be broken because that specific event (In its exact dimensions) was discontinued. There should certainly be a new record for the modern javelin considering the change was made to intentionally shorten the throwing distance unless they can come up with some sort of equation to assess how long the throw would've been with the old javelin.

Isn't that actually the whole point why you would make a video about this, that you explain how it is that the spear went so much further?! From what I can see, I think that the change of the centre of mass makes it impossible for the javelin to slide along on the field, instead of sticking in the ground like it is supposed to.

Excellent point applying 10% to Zelezny's record throw to convert it to what it would equate using the previous javelin. I got 108.33 doing the calculation. Very close obviously. You may have picked the first two numbers out of four past the decimal. 108.3280 which is 198.33. This isn't to critisize in any way. I didn't even know what Zelezny's record was and your idea is excellent. It means then that Zelezny has the best throw so far although as you mention the record set by Uwe Hohn will always stand.

God, that footage at 1:09 is unreal. Even in slow motion his throw looks like some people's regular speed throw. I wish I knew how to estimate the amount of g forces that throw put on various parts of his shoulder, arm and back because even if you're not on track and field, you can probably just understand intuitively how insane it is that a throw like that doesn't just tear a person's ligaments apart. It blows my mind seeing clips of high-level athletes in slow motion because it just looks so unnatural. They really are practically superhuman. I'm absolutely certain that throw would destroy my shoulder if that was me. It's so obvious to me that it feels silly and trite for me to even say it. My entire shoulder would probably just explode.

A big thumbs up to this because EVERY video I've seen about Uwe Hohn's throw claim the javelin was changed BECAUSE of that throw whereas, as you correctly point out, there had been discussions for some time about 1.) possible changing the weight or 2.) changing the aerodynamics. Uwe Hohn's throw just speeded up the implementation of what was already planned. Changing the weight was decided against because injuries are already an issue in the javelin and increasing the weight would make things infinitely worse.

@deron steinke, they say you can roughly add 10 meters to the new style javelin distances, so let's call the equivalent distance of Jan's current record with a neutrally stable, lower cross section javelin a round 108.5 meters. Jan Zelezny (98.48m) - men’s javelin throw world record Heading into the Jena Zeiss Meeting in the German city of Jena on May 25, 1996, Jan Zelezny was already the reigning Olympic and world champion. Furthermore, the Czech ace was already in possession of the existing world record following a 95.66m attempt at Sheffield three years back.

If I remember correctly, after they've changed javelin's center of balance the WR was bellow 80m. The old javelins required lower degrees of release because they could glide so much better and to manage a 45 degrees launch is actually very difficult. For ppl that wonder "what if...", They should investigate the release speeds from videos. Zelezny used to have 36 m/s release speeds if I remember correctly. Release speed and angle is of course coupled, and the higher the degrees the less speed you can achieve.
@Rymeths
@Rymeths 2 жыл бұрын
Angle and release speed is *not* coupled. Horizontal movement and vertical movement are two movements which effect the same thrown object at the same time, two movements, two vectors of force. A 45° degree angle is normally the optimum because it is in the middle between a vertical and horizontal throw, thus giving a thrown object the max amount of time while still giving the maximum amount of forward momentum. Things that are able to glide are exempt from this rule, since they create their updraft based on velocity and may tumble when too vertical
@miko19r
@miko19r 2 жыл бұрын
@@Rymeths Coupled in a sense that the human body cannot work the same at all angles . There is no athlete that throws the javelin with angles higher than 45 degrees consistently because throwing at lower angles can bring better results. Your body (hand) can reach higher speeds that most of time offset the not optimal angle. Don't try to solve this with physics, it won't work. Finally , glide depends highly on the wind flow. Sometimes higher angles can lead to better results, sometimes lower angles are better due to the wind flow. The vibrations on the javelin also play a role and so does the rotation of the javelin. I will not pretend that I have solved a system of equations to base my answer on that. I used to be a javelin athlete, so that's from my experience. As simple as it looks, javelin throwing is in fact such a complicated and technical sport.
