There is no universally accepted right answer but I did two things differently. Firstly, I always smear both sides of any dry paper/card gaskets with a very thin layer of grease. This holds the gasket in place but also provides little bit of initial imperviousness and, most importantly, allows the gasket to spread, flex and slide easily as the bolts are tightened and so form to the contour of the metal surfaces more effectively. Secondly. although, as you say, it's not part of the Jaguar recommendation in this case, the whole point about cross tightening bolts is to start in the middle of a long edge and progressively work outwards towards the corners so that the "ripple" of metal gets pushed towards the corners and pushed outward rather than becoming "trapped" in the middle of a long side where it then has nowhere to go. I'm afraid that starting in the corners is the worst of all worlds although, in this case, I'm sure it will be fine. Richard

Agreed that all sealing gaskets should have lubricant. Thin film of fresh transmission fluid would be my usual go to.

Good job John but your capacities are a bit out. The gearbox and torque converter hold about 10 litres in total and you will find that you are only able to get 6 litres of new fluid in so there is a lot more of the old fluid left in circulation than you might expect which is why using a flushing oil, other than flushing with the proper fluid, makes no sense. The alternative fluid change method which is sometimes also called "flushing" is to dismantle the union which goes into the cooler and divert the old fluid into a container whilst adding new fluid into the other side of the union with the engine running and therefore the auto pump operating. This does ensure a total fluid change but needs specialised equipment. Richard

Is that a 5HP gearbox? I think i recognise it - same one in my 540i from 2002. Should have installed the Transgo pressure regulator upgrade.

Another great, informative video John. Surely if you use flushing oil, some of the flushing oil will remain in the gearbox. Isn’t that a bad thing?

That is correct Nev. and a VERY good point. Whilst it is intended to be Ok in your system, Its detergent properties MUST dilute the efficacy of the dedicated transmission fluid. Your simple comment has moved me from ambivalent towards flushing gearboxes, to Anti👍

Hi John. I havè the 2004 6speed box, so this looks different but similar to mine. Does this one have a cylindrical mechatronics seal around the electrical connector you mentioned? If so it could be worthwhile changing that while you are in there. As I found, the only way to change it is by reaching up inside the box when it is drained. Just a thought.
