Hi John. What an epic project, so expertly, skilfully, clearly and carefully done. A great reference for anyone of us who feels confident enough to take on the job ourselves. Personally, I got my gearbox oil changed by an independent specialist, as I felt the job was well outside my skillset. Your set of videos has confirmed that!

Hi John, I’m just a tad late to the party. Enjoyed the series and related to some of the trials and tribs you went through. I had the fluid changed in my 2004 XK8 ZF6HP transmission last year. I decided I wasn’t comfortable under the car with the engine running (even though I have QuickJacks) and had a transmission shop do the deed. I supplied all the fluid, pan and filters so it was done while I waited. Keep up the great work. Cheers!

Hi John, Another great video. When I did the same job on my 2000 XKR this has a dipstick/filler tube at the back of the engine bay, made the refilling process much easier. The only issue with this set-up is the tube is blanked off with a plastic cap that is not reusable, once you break the seal to remove the cap you will need a replacement. I also got an aftermarket dipstick; this is very helpful in determining the correct level of fluid.

Great set of videos John. Presumably if Jaguar hadn’t insisted on a ‘sealed for life’ box they would have put a filler into the engine bay, like my old XJ40, which would have made the job considerably easier! I wonder if anyone has ever made an adapter to the box to allow this? Maybe a gap in the market there! Regards

@richardsutton01 Жыл бұрын
You can buy a kit which screws into the fill/level socket and leads up to through the engine bay to a remote fill point. All you have to do then is drain out the old oil, measure the volume extracted and pour the same volume through the remote filler.

Hi John, well done on the gearbox service buddy 👏 I remember doing this on a previous XK8 and doing that fill plug up with the engine running is hot hot hot 🔥

Re the fill plug. My research says the thread is M18-1.5, so a Fumoto Drain Valve that MIGHT work in theory is FG2SX, but only if it can seat properly. I have the 6HP26 trans, so can't verify fitment for the 5HP24. If seating is an issue, multiple crush washers could be stacked to fill the gap.

what a great idea, that would eliminate the possibility of of burns and crossing threads while trying to line up plug over hot exhaust. When I do mine I'm going to research this idea. Thanks

I don't envy you having to do all that lying on your back. I used the recommended Mobil LT71141 oil in my XK8 and it was a yellow colour, the same as the fluid I drained out although that had darkened. The red stuff looks more like a Dexron III spec oil although it will presumably be an equivalent.

I was a little surprised by the colour of the ATF that you put in. I thought that it was a different colour (brown?), however it could be that your transmission uses a different oil than mine (6HP26). Excellent set of videos. Thank John

strange you put in 5.1L into the gearbox as they say that without any oil in the torque converter its 6L in total and with torque converter its 4L . I did exactly the same as you and all that came out was 4L and what went back in was 4L , and i also waited over night for it to drain . so i,m unsure where you found the extra 1.1L . Good tip on the tapping of the gearbox sump bolts . without it they will not undo .
@ToTheGarage

Hi Derek. I think mine was previously overfilled by filling while not level and how much oil drains out of your torque converter is more down to luck than judgment, How it was driven just before dropping the oil. seals, the position that the torque converter settles in .... So the long and short of it is. I dont really know😁

Yes Ive struggled with those sump bolts on my previous cars so developed that trick along the way.

Yet another great video. I noticed that when you ran through the gearbox to circulate the new oil, that to ensure 1st gear was operated, you had the box in sport mode. Good thinking, but you didn’t mention it.

Nicely done, no swearing! The first time I attempted this, I felt like I had to race against the transmission getting too hot (over 40c, or so I thought) but that didn’t seem a concern if yours?
@ToTheGarage
@ToTheGarage Жыл бұрын
The temperature is not hypercritical. If you think about doing it on a windy or cool day, the transmission pan surface would be cooler than the oil it contained and so you would wait longer before doing the top up and the oil would be hotter. All the temperature requirement is there for, is to ensure that the oil is :- Not cold. Being pumped around the transmission. The gearbox has recognised that it is at operating temperature. You would have to go considerably over temp before it affected the oil volume and therefore the level.

Where do the two forward running hoses go from the coolant tank ? My 1998 only has one hose running to the thermostat. The other hose nipple is not connected.

On my 2001 XKR convertible ther is a oil fill/ dipstick tube which has a blanking piece on the end I have heard this is quite common . I have bought an after market dipstick for it hope fully when I change the transmission fluid it will make things a bit easier .was wondering if it may be an option you could fit on yours or not. Great channel btw. Iain Laity Deepest Cornwall

I can tell you now, you really only want to use ZF LifeGuard 5 on these boxes. Anything will cause issues. I know you have already doneit, and dont waato sound like a knowit all, but they act strange without the ZF specific fluid. I got my car with weird box behavior. It had been changed etc within 500 miles, but it was acting so strange - level was correct etc. I did change and it toally transformed it back to a normal operation. Mentioned many times on te forums.

But Johns gearbox is a Merc 5 speed box, not a 6 speed ZF as used with the later 4.2 engine.

@@stagnite2 John's gearbox is the ZF5HP24 5 speed, like mine. I think that the Merc gearbox was used in the 4.0 XKR but I have no experience with that.
