This game reminds you why the franchise is called The Legend of Zelda. Zelda’s story really feels like her legend. This is probably the best iteration of the character to date, and she has a larger hand in the story even if she’s absent from 99% of the gameplay portions.

Zelda was always fond of Silent Princess showers, but struggled to cultivate them, and could only get them to grow in the wild. She spent years of research to fail at this task. Yet strangely, the blossom around the final Dragon Tear. Her tear. In her sacrifice, her last thoughts were not of herself. Not of the pain and suffering she would endure as a Dragon, cursed to be alone, but instead her thoughts were filled with her kingdom, and Link. As a Dragon, she was cursed to wander the skies of hyrule, alone. Mindless and voiceless. A Silent Princess.

I vehemently disagree: Tldr: the story suffere from a billion plot holes, the new characters are mid, ignores zelda lore, the cutscenes are bad, and the ending is overrated garbage * Zelda and Link’s relationship gets almost no screen time throughout the story because the minute Zelda is time warped to the past, their progression is put on hold in favor of gameplay. This is bad because it hurts what BOTW and the trailers for this game setup * It has enormous plot holes and conveniences such as but not limited to: - [ ] Yona being Sidon’s childhood friend before the great calamity, implying Hyrule had contact with other kingdoms but for some reason didn’t ask for troops from those countries in advance to use against the calamity. I know they were relying on Link but rhoam should have had a backup plan. He CLEARLY didn’t according to this game - [ ] Nobody figuring out zelda is an imposter even after link finds at least most of the memories before the fight with phantom ganon - [ ] The new Shrines are a MASSIVE contradiction. If we are to assume the Zonai built them before Zelda’s arrival in the past, what do they mean by “sealing the dark”? The calamity had not happened yet and so there was no reason for a hero to be trained???? If they were built after the memories by mineru, that makes even less sense. Not only was the bitch damaged by Ganondorf’s gloom but she wouldnt have enough time to build 152 of them! (The answer to this particular plot hole is actually on a hylian tablet that is hard to get and impossible to read) - [ ] Zelda not telling Rauru and Sonia that Ganondorf was the corpse she saw in the depths. - [ ] Ganondorf’s power level is inconsistent as HECK. At the beginning of the game, when he is awoken, he manages to take Link’s right arm with a giant gloom blast. However, instead of finishing him off, he retreats underground like a bitch, also, in the final fight why doesn he do this again? Instead, he shoots tiny globs. * The present day storyline about us gathering the new sages of hyrule is actually not that bad except for one major problem: The end of each dungeon suffers from the same BS copy-paste cutscene of the Imprisoning War before transitioning to Zelda telling the lifeless ancient sages some trash about Link coming with the same dialogue 4 times in a fow. Yes, I am aware that these are canonically meant for the new sages to hear but WHO CARES because each one is the exact same with nothing for the PLAYER WHO IS WATCHING THEM, which is what cutscenes are MEANT to be for * The new characters are a mess of wasted potential - [ ] The problem with Rauru and Sonia is that although they technically have personalities, like the story itself, all that is thrown to the side in favor of gameplay. For example, we see virtually none of Sonia sassiness until her desth cutscene. This makes them much less likeable than BOTW’s champions. However, in the crappy ancient hylian tablet quest, we get some nice stuff regarding her relationship with Rauru, with the tablets even revealing how RUru’s character mirrors Zelda with him ignoring his King duties in favor of hunting. Not fundamentally bad but there is a reason why I didn’t care about Sonia dying, which really sucks. - [ ] As for Mineru, she is just bland and unlikable. She is just another one of the dungeon sages whose cutscene you are bound to skip past. I have warmed up to Sonia and Rauru a little but I WILL NEVER donthe same with her. She is like Purah without the charm! Once again, her only personality is saved for the tablets except this time its ALL OF HER PERSONALITY - [ ] Speaking of which, dont even get me STARTED on the sages themselves!!! Faceless and lame! This was not a problem at all in BOTW because in each of the first champion’s memories, we saw their actual personalities and relationships with Link. Thanks for making me wait till the DLC, nintendo! No tablets save them here! * The game, unless you want to use borderline mental gymnastics, ignores all previous lore which would be tolerable except its ancient past cutscenes are a boring retelling of previous zelda lore we have seen before. Literally nothing is added even though everyone hought the story had something to do with ending the curse of demise. * Half of the ancient past cutscenes, like the Pre-Calamity ones from BOTW, happen with no context and feel like disconnected filler from the story they are trying to tell. For example, the Ganondorf’s introduction into the story is just him looking at moldugas attacking the party. BOTW had this problem especially with the Yiga cutscene butat least we had Creating a Champion and the diaries to fill the gaps not to mention every cutscene was actually important to the story or characters in some minor way that mattered. Also, the sonia desth cutscene happens with no setup * Ganondorf is a TERRIBLE villain in this game. Lets assume for a second that the dumbasses at the english localization didn’t retcon his motive to “kill Rauru cuz the Zonai ruined the Kingdom’s fighting spirit” erego turning him into a generic bad guy, he still SUCKS! If his goal is to restore the people’s fighting spirit, and his problem is the zonai, why does he kill the King’s wife and then turn into a demon just to be evil, completely forgetting his goal in the first place?!!? And NO, because this game borderline retcons SS, you can BARELY argue that its because of the Curse of Demise. - [ ] Speaking of Demise, however, let me tell you that, even though that guy had not deep motive, how he succeeds where Ganondorf fails. Unlike Ganondorf, he is properly built up through the story through mentions of characters, and ancient legends. When we finally see him, it is as though we are meeting up with some ancient evil. His dialogue also supports this, making him truly intimidating since hs is the true demon king. Ganondorf on the other hand is just comically evil. He has few intimidating lines, is barely built up, and actually has a motive which he abandons for no fucking readon. He is like Unapaq from Legend of Korra! * The ending is an overrated disaster. Why? Because it is a masterclass of prioritizing emotion over making sense. Maybe thats why everybody likes this garbage finale so much without bothering to stop and think about why it makes NO SENSE and ruins everything. The problems begin right after we defeat Dragondorf. - [ ] First, once he explodes, a giant energy column forms, which somehow doesn’t destory the surface that its clearly pointing towards. I would tolerate this if this was where the bullshit stopped. Unfortunately, it gets worse. - [ ] We then awaken in some magical realm where we meet Sonia and Rauru’s ghosts (wait, I thought Rauru’s spirit passed on at the beginning of the game? But if this is the afterlife, where the hell are the other spirits?) and they somehow manage to give Link his right hand back, despite the fact that Rauru SPECIFICALLY TOLD HIM that his hand was beyond saving. - [ ] They then shoot some magic blast at the Light Dragon, despite the fact that Draconificaion was SUPPOSED to be irrreversible, turning it back into Zelda and ruining any emotional weight the game had. Yes, i know recall is pretty powerful but Sonia and Rauru and Sonia suddenly having this much power is unearned Besides, this is just inconsequential bullshit on a new level! Wasn’t this whole game’s terrible theme about sacrifice?! - [ ] After the pair fall into a conveniently placed pool of water, the game repeat BOTW’s ending by having zelda say hello to link after so long except this time is boring as shit instead of absolutely beautiful. Why? Because in BOTW, the context of meeting Zelda was that this was a girl we once knew and got to know again as we explored Hyrule. Here, we already know the girl but the story is so bad she not only gets no further development and the context of us seeing her again involves the game breaking its own rules to deliver a contrived bullshit outcome!!! Seriously, this genuinely up there with Skylanders: Imaginators and the unrestored version of Star Wars: KOTOR 2 as one of the worst endings to any video game I have EVER seem

The Geoglyphs are one of two things that keep TotK from being a perfect sequel. The story is fine! But it's clearly a cohesive narratice with a beginning, middle, and end! And you can just stumble across them in any order! U less you take special care with the murals at the forgotten temple, or use a guide, there is a good chance you ruin part of the story for yourself! The memories in BotW were all disconnected character moments, and could be viewed in any order! You can’t treat the Geoglyphs the same way! The second is that not only is it perfectly possible to find and free the 5th sage before you're supposed to, but Purah's alternate dialogue if you do just leaves... no impact! Just make it a LOCKED DOOR that won't open until you get the first 4 sages! EASY! TotK has better gameplay AND a more fleshed out story than BotW. But they barely mesh. BotW's story and gameplay sync perfectly. Still like both games, but I have opinions!

Seriously, this genuinely up there with Skylanders: Imaginators and the unrestored version of Star Wars: KOTOR 2 as one of the worst endings to any video game I have EVER seem Conclusion: When it comes to writing, this franchise has no future. This game has told me that the people at Nintendo, mainly Eiji Aonuma, no longer care about making well written pieces of fiction but rather forgettable games that dont make you think. If I had known how awful this game’s story was going to be, I might not have contributed to the masses that told nintendo they can be as lazy as they want when it comes to characters and lore by buying this game. Despite the fact that there are indeed good parts of thtis story such as the opening, champions from the previous game, and post credit scene, it clearly had no passion put into it otherwise. As bad as Age of Calamity’s story was, at least the people working on it had passion for the characters and story from Breath of the Wild. How the hell is this game “slightly darker than Majora’s Mask”?!?! In this game, I think Aonuma decided halfway through development to scrap the idea of a good story and just focus on gameplay. Clearly Miyamoto was a bad influence on him. This is genuinely the 2nd worst videogame story I have ever seen, only topped by Skylanders: Imaginators Final Score: 2/10 Does it need a Rewrite: YES
