Maybe after 100,000 hours the led in the opto isolator will die but it should be fine as long as no heat is generated. I would unplug it for sake of shorting a very nice probe on accident by forgetting something. Great walkthrough. Thank you.

Thanks Cliff. Interesting as always. I plugged mine in 18 months ago when I bought it and have not unplugged it since. If you ever want to see if the electric contacts are “worn” due to constant voltage you could look at mine. Also when I set up for a probing routine I usually run 50 ipm and I always set spindle speed to 0. Gives me a little peace of mind that I won’t start the spindle. Thanks again

Hi Douglas - Thanks for your input here. 0 RPM is a good idea. Good to hear the probe has survived 18 months plugged in. On average how many hours a week did you have it powered up? Cheers Cliff

Threadexpress ... Probably on average 16-20 hours a week... my best guess.

@@douglasdarby8584 Thanks Douglas. Well that is pretty good empirical evidence that plugging in is likely to be OK short to medium term anyway. Cheers Cliff

I have a 600x1200mm cnc router. This can surely be used to do a digital probe routine to copy a part and then set up the g code and tool paths..? I haven't seen a video of this. This is my primary need right now.... thanks

Hi Steve - Do you mean using a probe to digitize a part geometry? Cliff

@@Threadexpress yes. Sorry, I don't have all the correct lingo. New to this. I understand Mach3 has a routine for this.?

@@stevehinton5300 Hi Steve. Tormachs are usually running PathPilot and do not have digitizing software , I am not sure about Mach3 . But these basic passive probes like the SPU 40 and ITTP are not intended for digitizing applications. Cliff

@@stevehinton5300 Hi Steve, That is what is called digitizing and a different design probe it better for that type of work. I guess your next question might be why? Well a higher priced probe with active electronics will better handle the thousands of switching cycles required. Cheers Cliff

How many wires for the probe ?
@Threadexpress
@Threadexpress 2 жыл бұрын
Hi John. "It consists of a NC circuit (normally closed), using two connector wires (normally pins 4/5 of a 5 pin DIN plug either side of the center pin), the circuit is broken on a touch event when the probe stylus tip contacts the work." See also website: hallmarkdesign.co.nz/
