They felt more like life or death events than anything else in the series. They were even more intense than the chase sequences in Need for Speed The Run (and those sequences are actual life or death events in that the player character dies if the player fails them).

GT4 would've had touge-like races in Missions but it was cut during development. Edit: Though he could've do GT6 spec ii mod videos where user created tracks are restored, including Mt. Hakodate.

Initial D and Gran Turismo/Fast and Furious sparked the golden age of racing games in the late 1990s to the mid 2000s, Japanese developers were really going all out with Gran Turismo clones or games focused on the Japanese racing scene (touge, expressway). Real shame this era don't exist anymore, they aint making a new Tokyo Extreme Racer title.

You skipped straight from TXR Drift 1 (Kaido Battle 1) to TXR Drift 2 (Kaido Battle 3), the 2nd game, Chain Reaction (or just Kaido Battle 2) was released in Europe as Kaido Racer, and TXR Drift 2 was released as Kaido Racer 2
