Touhou 15.5: Antinomy of Common Flowers - Sumireko/Doremy Story

Sumireko's a spacer character not unlike Mamizou. However while Mamizou relies on trickery, fast movements and controlling the field Sumireko's much slower and relies on heavy hitting attacks with large range. The problem is said attacks tend to have blind spots and have lag both before and after using them. You both need to keep track of where exactly your enemy is and where they're going to be or else you'll just wiff horribly as her.
Doremy however is a bizarre character through and through. Essentially she's one of those characters that's just really tough to get a read on and what she's about to do considering she can quickly pull out just about anything in the book. The thing about Doremy however is that she has many specific moves for just about any occasion, the matter is making sure you use the right one. Doremy's attacks are strong, but the reason she ends up being so unpredictable is because her attacks have her using her dream bubbles to move and launch herself all over the place to attack. As such her very attacks leave her open for counterattack and getting punched out of the sky if your opponent sees them coming.

Alright. I have several things to say here. First, since Doremy's Last Word has the asterisks (*) in its formatting like an "Uncanny" Last Word and Weird Spells (as opposed to regular last words, which use the standard card formatting - brackets in Japanese and quotation marks in most English translations), it is almost certainly linked to the sleep paralysis urban legend like you speculated. But yeah, it's barely mentioned anywhere else - even in versus. Second, I figured out the solution to the Reimu/Reisen riddle from last week! In AoCF's versus mode dialogue, Doremy thanks Reisen for "stopping by the dream corridor that one time." In other words, while only Reimu goes all the way in LoLK, Reisen also acts on her suspicions and goes to the dream corridor, where she and Doremy meet and chat (Followed possibly by Doremy giving Reisen a game over? Personal headcanon). Thus, both routes are canon, though only _half_ of one actually is. Third, I suppose I'll explain to Bee how exactly there was a third Sumireko. Though Sumireko's urban legend was _supposedly_ the 7 wonders of the world, the reality was that this legend was about the Occult Balls and not Sumireko. So what has she had all along? The answer is what replaces her occult attack, which Ron unfortunately but understandably did not showcase. (P.S.: She does not have a new last word because... development time/constraints or something, IDK LOL.) As revealed in some obscure ULiL versus dialogue (One of 3/4? possibilities for Sumireko dittos), her true urban legend is "Doppelganger." It's a very nondescript legend that includes any variation of "someone who looks just like you" doing things you cannot recall. In Sumireko's case, it actually allows her to make a "shadow duplicate" of sorts and control it, which is how she interacted with Gensokyo to plant the Occult Balls in the first place. The third Sumireko here is the dream dweller's Doppelganger/shadow-clone-jutsu turned sentient. Finally, I suppose this is a good time as any to give a *spoiler-free* warning about _Violet Detector._ Like the previous scene-based games, VD has the day-and-scene system, but there's a bit of an inconsistency - unlike the other games, there are more days but fewer scenes per day. The number of scenes ramps up to a sizable amount later on (I'm pretty sure it caps at 6) but early on in the series the short days may necessitate a condensed upload schedule like you did for StB and DS.

It took me a while to figure out how Doremy's occult works but here is my terrible explanation: whenever your opponents get hit by the pink dream bubble things (standard projectile attack, x), the bubbles start floating up. You can physically "eat" the dreams by running into them or picking them up all at once by using your vacuum move (non-moving special projectile, c). The dream bubbles will zoom to you and can damage the enemy. If you collect enough of these dreams, your occult attack will open a significantly larger portal and purple dreams will line the edge and drop, damaging the opponent. You have to refill your dream "meter" in order to use the "activated" occult attack. A cool strategy is to condense or spread many inactivated occult attacks and use an activated one so that a sh*t ton of dream bubbles rain on the enemy or cover the whole field. The portals have a time limit so it's hard to pull off. There are still a few more moves that confuse me, like Doremy's up-special (she just floats up using balloons, to collect dreams I guess?) and Tenshi's up special (leaps up-forward, does no damage but leaves her exposed after, so is it even useful?). Apparently also if you are in a middle of a special projectile attack and switch to your other character they will do an exclusive attack (for example, Marisa shoots a straight line of stars forward) and your perfect possesion bar starts to deplete until you attack or something it's super weird. I'm sorry for making yall for reading this long essay but I thought it would be helpful. ^^" I always look forward to your videos! Keep up the amazing work! I ^v^

This one went so far as to give Yukari a unique Story Mode Theme which is another remix of her PCB theme just like how Ran's Theme's a remix... At this rate, the next fighting game will go so far as to give the Final Boss a unique Story Mode Theme of her own (assuming it's not just Unknown X).

I’ve looked in the comments, and I wasn’t able to find anybody explaining why there are three Sumirekos. So I guess I will, I guess. Ah, spoilers by the way. In the 33rd chapter if Curiosities of Lotus Asia (this takes place during 16.5), Doremy explains that the Sumireko visiting Gensokyo is not actually the Sumireko they saw when they first met her. Apparently during the occult incident her soul and body were split in two, one residing in the Outside world, the other remains in Gensokyo. Poor Sumireko isn’t treated the same for a few chapters after that. The dream world Sumireko ended up in the outside world and I do not know exactly how. Bam. 3 teenagers. The best way I can describe this fight is Gensokyo Sumireko meets dream Sumireko which has Sumireko as her slave. Or Vice versa. Which means, technically, you didn’t win that fight. Simple answer: you all lost.

The one thing I take from this is Doremy almost has the same authority strength as Yukari when it comes to the Dream World, her dominion. She was so adamant that she manage things from her side and from her dialogue with Yukari, a youkai from the waking Gensokyo, who interfered with her work there, I get the impression that Doremy was slightly annoyed. Also I do believe Yukari has a grudge against Sumireko, given how she almost destroyed Gensokyo, and was pretty much exacting revenge in her turnabout ways in the final boss fight, confusing Doremy who slighted her as well. I always kinda dislike Yukari personality-wise, but I do appreciate her efforts in keeping Gensokyo safe albeit in shady ways. So that interaction somewhat solidifies those sentiments I had towards her

One thing to keep in mind is that Doremy surprisingly isn't that all powerful in the dream world. The topic came up in one of the recent chapters of CoLA which took place parallel to VD where Reimu assumed the same thing. Reimu was getting aggravated with Doremy cause she figured being the ruler of dreams and all that meant she could do anything she wanted in the dream world "Aren't you the ruler of dreams? Can't you just forcibly remake the dream or something?" "I can't interfere to that extent. I may call myself a ruler, but I'm closer to the zookeeper of a zoo full of dream residents. A zookeeper can't simply make a new animal. I _could_ spur the other dream residents to fight her though." It makes a lot of things make sense when you look at it like that. Considering now we know why despite being the "ruler of dreams" her and the dream world itself had been kinda pushed around and forcibly used by others. The Lunarians making her let them use the dream world to invade Gensokyo and hide the lunarians from Junko, Hecatia then forcing Doremy to keep the Lunarians locked in the dream world, the stuff you see here (and the whole incident itself) where she's pissed at Yukari and everyone else for interfering with the dream world but doesn't do anything about it, or in VD where she doesn't outright fix the problem rather she takes Rinnosuke's suggestion to the two Sumireko's fight it out and solve it themselves.

@@korohacker ZUN's been doing a lot of stuff with his side works now recently. They used to just be kinda fluff stories, but as of late he's been doing a lot of stuff that both ties into the games (Doremy as I mentions, Eternity did some seriously interesting stuff recently in the fairies manga as well), but also telling more complex stories that could be plots to games in their own right. Like, as of recently Reimu's trapped in hell and Tenshi and Komachi have teamed up together to go and try and rescue her). I definitely recommend taking an afternoon and reading the stuff. How to defeat Marisa: Sumireko Bomber. Also what the frick is Tenshi doing in the Dream World as Doremy Perfect Possession partner. I also noticed Unknown X was called Unfound Adventure before, which fitted with how bored Tenshi was back in SWR (and since Soku was basically a follow-up to that, as evidenced by its giant catfish boss basically being a wink to Tenshi's own ending), but this remix is called Occulty Madness, which fits because this incident is basically a follow-up to the one started by Sumireko in ULiL (AND she basically fights both her dream self AND her own urban legend while this plays). Doremy occult works if she collects basically the balls that come from her 4c b moves and 8c when you collect enough it will form a ball that orbits behind doremy you can collect up to four of them when you press the occult keys it puts a portal down the more balls the bigger the portal and around the edges of said portals black balls form and fall down if you put another portal in the same spot it will use the balls from the first portal and from the second smaller portal you just formed

Yes and no. Like she said she can split herself many _MANY_ times to keep an eye on dream worlders. However what she splits off haven't been shown to be able to do anything besides observe and be there, such as how any fight including them they just stay completely still and don't do anything.

Hang on just a minute, Ron. I have a HILARIOUS theory, which is that Doremy _chooses_ to do nothing in those situations. Think about it. If she's trying to keep the dream dwellers under control, it would make the most sense to possess them and do absolutely nothing when her turn comes, in order to gimp the dream dwellers and make them easier to beat. (Reisen's story doesn't count, though, because of game design.) In other words, Doremy does diddly squat in the slave position because she's trying to help the player.
