New Touhou came out. First impressions of it are quite positive, I feel like it's probably the best Touhou in quite a while. Music and presentation for the 2nd half is very good, game looks great. I especially like how the final boss revolves around you running away from her. I haven't seen a shmup do that since Twilight Refrain. Difficulty-wise right now the game seems like it's very hard without hypers, but very learnable. Resources are also quiet scarce for a Touhou game. With hypers the game is really easy though, mostly because the otter hyper is very broken and can cancel everything.
Things I don't like though is that the bullet visibility is at an all-time low, it's actually kind of unacceptable. Even PC-98 was better than this. Spellcard backgrounds make the bullets blend in like mad, your own hypers cover the bullets like mad and in the final there are 50 tokens hovering in front of you distracting you and covering the bullets, to just name a few.
Also I'm not sure what to think about the last two patterns, since it seems like story took precedence over gameplay there. The penultimate especially throws almost walls at you and dodging it is stupidly precise. It's clear the game just wants you to spam hypers to get through it. Which is weird, because you can do the rest of the game perfectly fine without hypers.
The system this time around is like a weird mix of Gemini Wing and UFO.
At the start you choose whether you want a strong shot, a strong focused shot or a strong bomb.
Enemies will then drop animal tokens that behave like UFO tokens, except they move randomly and take forever to disappear. They switch between three variants, wolf, otter and hawk.
Getting three wolfs or three hawks will give you a very powerful hyper. Wolf gives a strong focused shot hyper and hawk a strong shot hyper. Otter gives you a shield that cancels bullets.
Getting five tokens without three of the same ones gives you a border. This doesn't give you any benefits besides extra tokens when it ends. The more tokens of the same kind you have, the longer the hyper lasts. Resources are gotten through dropped items that function through the token chain.
Hypers are insanely strong and the otter hyper is actually legit broken. So for this run I opt to only get borders.
Getting hit during a hyper/border will cancel it without losing a life, also called a roar break.
It's not possible to avoid picking up tokens. There are simply too many and they just never disappear.
Enemies are extremely tanky in this game, popcorn enemies have like a million health.
Power is also a problem in this game. You lose 0.50 power upon death and the difference between 4.00 and 3.00 power feels like losing half your power.
Scoring in this game seems easier than survival, which I don't think is a good thing. Scoring seems to mostly involve spamming otter hyper and bombing, which is just not very interesting. The movement of the tokens being random is also a major issue that makes it more luck-based than it should be.

If you're barely managing to 1cc it for the first time it's hella epic, otherwise it feels unique but cheap. Balanced, as all things should be.

One thing i gotta give to ZUN is that he knows how to make beautiful games without needing overly complex or flashy danmaku. His patterns are simple yet effective. And while the fans have made some pretty mesmerizing works lately, its nice to go back and load up an old ZUN title more pleasing to the eyes. He does however need to get back into making the bullets stand out from the background. LoLK did a great job of doing that but his later patterns seem to keep blending too much

@@Scyclo the worst is the extra stage The background is red and half of the bullets are red as well And if you use reimu's wolf hyper, then almost all bullets are invisible in front of your shots + the background

I was blown away by this game's second half. The demo really didn't do it justice. Both music and dialogue felt extremely stale. But now I do see it's an excellent game, without a doubt. The possession and revenge plot, the amazing soundtrack direction, the subtle hints through dialogue of which spirit is accompanying you...it's all extremely well done.

I completely agree with your comment on bullet visibility. Not only has bullet visibility been a problem in WBaWC, but I believe it's actually also a big issue in HSiFS. The backgrounds are so distracting! The backgrounds are filled with distracting, moving, and bright colors that make it a huge pain to focus on the bullets.

I also find the "Extra Beasts Appeared" writing to be incredibly distracting too. I really hope someone makes a patch for the visuals because the game itself is super fun.

HSiFS only has real bullet visibility issues on stage 2. Still not a big deal IMO since it's so early in the game and the difficulty doesn't ramp up until stage 4.

Yeah bullet visibility is really bad in this game, especially with ReimuW. I really hope somebody makes a patch that makes bullets easier to see, I love the game besides that (and maybe the last 2 spells, I'm mixed on those).

There is a "visuals"(that's the name of the patch) patch that makes the hyper mode shoots more transparent, a shrinemaiden user told me, I'll check it out later.

Keiki's penultimate is static. The yellow bullets have a coridor like on 31:44 where you should just go to the left gap. The red bullet Yukari-like coridor is trickier couse it gets narrow at the end and you also have to go right to dodge that last bullet.

Well, that was a pleasant experience. Probably some of the most unique and enjoyable music and patterns I've seen from Touhou in a while. While I agree that the final two patterns are going overboard in terms of doing them without Hypers, I do like the nod to the story it provides where it seems like the spirit you chose is basically going "Alright, let's finish this" and basically fills the screen with your chosen spirit's Hyper. That part of it is neat.

Pretty much agree with the description, I love ZUN and Touhou but sometimes it seems like he doesn't do enough updates and immediately moves onto the next project xD I'm still pretty satisfied with this game though.

@@estebanvelarde1 I agree, its crazy to say that Touhou is losing its popularity (which it really isn't, it's always been very niche in the west at least) because its not lewding its characters, which is a very common thing that puts franchises composing of female characters in the dirt. If anything, one of the reasons the franchise is so popular with so many people around the world is that there's basically zero fanservice that doesn't come from dodgy fanmade doujins posted to internet sites. It's honestly very nice to be able enjoy a female character-dominated franchise and not be looked at like I'm into rule34. Touhou turning into the next Senran Kagura will thankfully never happen, it would be a disaster scenario that would kill it instantaneously.

Hi Jaimers! Congratulations on clearing the game this fast without any hypers! It's always a pleasure watching you play. I am very torn on the game overall right now. I was very excited to finally play it and the stage design, boss patterns and presentation of Stage 4 onward did not disappoint me. Unfortunately, the beast system has hampered my fun with the game. I definitely agree with you about the visibility issues (that only in part stem from it), but I even found the sound effects to be quite distracting because getting a hyper and shooting during it is surprisingly loud even though the rest of the game is the same as ever. Much more than that, I am sad at how the hypers completely trivialize the difficulty of the game. There are so many cool patterns in the second half of the game and you don't actually have to dodge much at all even on Lunatic because you can kill them off way too soon or not bother dodging at all with otter. I feel like HSiFS had a similar issue, but at least there you had the option just not to release at all, which was definitely the most fun experience for me. You cannot avoid the problem this easily here. With the limited time I spent playing this game, I honestly think I'd like it better if the animal spirits didn't exist at all. Maybe I will change my mind regarding this when I try a run like this; so far I have only cleared the game with no limitations, but honestly had more fun in the practice modes actually enjoying the patterns without the distraction. How do you feel about this game's gimmick? Would you prefer if it just didn't exist at all or do you think altering it would be fine? I have the fear that ZUN will keep coming up with crazy gimmicks in the future that end up taking the focus away from actually dodging. I think having both bombs and a separate insanely strong mechanic like hypers and releases is going overboard. Perhaps it would be better if he started replacing the traditional bomb system with whatever he comes up with, or integrates the mechanic into it. Sorry for the little rant, but your opinion on ZUN's work always seems very genuine and well-founded, without holding any criticism back. It's cool to hear what you think about this game!

For the sound effects, you can simply lower the SE Volume in Options! I always set mine to 40 - 50%, it makes the game more fun to play and I get to hear the music (which, by the way, is fantastic) better! I've been playing in practice mode, which is really useful for me since I find many of the late game patterns difficult even with hypers. I actually like the hyper mechanic, it's quite fun to use but I do agree with you with how it can make the game too easy.

The last spell on Keiki is....feels like bomb spamming honestly, not a nice ending for me, and also Mayumi is unironically harder than Keiki just because she threw Sukune Katano on my face, and fast micrododging non-spells

Final spell makes sense story-wise. Your spirit is calling every other spirits to finally fight against the last boss with you to put an end to the hell army. Cuz really, if she is based on the artist who made the terracotta soldiers of china then reimu has been facing an army this whole time

Nah bro there was no hell invasion. The animal spirits were using the human spirits in hell as slaves, which led to the human spirits summoning Keiki, who built them a city and shit and started protecting them. The animal spirits didn’t like that so they go get Reimu and lie about what she’s doing because they know her dumbass will go along with it.

Okay, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought this game felt easy with hypers...especially after I beat Extra on a blind run. I personally like the idea, especially with the strategic play you can do with otter hyper shield but it's definitely WAY too good. Also I think there could've been a better way to give you hypers than to do UFO all over again...A lot of good hyper management can net you a pretty darn easy clear in this game.

Bullet visibility is insanely bad, I felt like I struggled hard to differentiate bullets from my shots/background my entire playthrough. I played Imperishable Night after to compare and in IN it's so clear and visible it's night and day.

Guys I'm not crazy, the deathbomb window is SUPER short compared to the other games, right ?. It's not 0.3 sec anymore. I think it's back at 0.1 in this game

Is TH17 even possible to complete with Marisa or Youmu on lunatic difficulty? I really can't see how you can get by some of the (mid-)bosses without homing shots.

29:57 ZUN where is the optimization? Huh? But anyway, I can definitely foresee a patch to remove all beast tokens, otherwise if one wants to do a Perfect run they always need to be careful of stray tokens flying around, especially on Keiki's last 2 spells.

Visibility is definitely one of the big flaws this game has. It's like playing the second half of UFO stage 5 with MarisaA, but for the whole game. Hopefully there will be mods correct that a bit
