I'd argue some of these names are actually more clever than what 4Kids would come up with. Many people think of their dubs for One Piece, Pokemon or Yu-Gi-Oh; in those cases, they care less about meaning and more making it vaguely sound like their original Japanese counterparts (Satoshi becomes Ash and Shigeru becomes Gary), sometimes playing on this by using alitteration (like how Jonouchi Katsuya becomes Joey Wheeler). Of course there are some outliers that are notably more creative than their Japanese counterparts (can't think of any off the top of my head, but I remember Shaman King was really good with it), and I also understand that them calling it a "4Kids Quiz" is most likely a catch all for localized names in any Japanese to English work (such as the localized Stand names in JJBA), but the names on this quiz do actually try to be accurate, which is kinda cool. Also at 6:11, vulpine means fox.

It might help if you get THCRAP and use it in conjunction with an official Touhou game. The names are probably coming from their "4Kids English" patch. But still...how does one get Captain Falcon's famous taunt from "Shameimaru"? Anyayayayayayayaya. I love these patches. Some of these names make much more sense in their altered storys and title cards. Some even have art and bullets altered. Sakuya is "The waitress late for baseball practice" and replaces her knives with baseballs. Their hitboxes are just as bad but i did hard 1cc in that patch. [Edit: i just realized that might have shown off the cool changing assets but didn't explain how plot changes explain names. ] As hilariously silly example Sannyo is Sweetie Safran because she sells candy in the patch, and it's not suspicious at all. Then her last name is just a more local herb than a Komakusa.

i actually got 73 correct. I guess watching the 2 and half hour series about "every change that 4kidz made to one piece" really made my brain perfectly align with how 4kidz would think lol. Also: I also clicked eternity for betty butterfly and ashley hartman with the same confidence.

I know 4Kids changed character relationships, but even sugesting Yukari and Okina being related would probably end with you mysteriously disappearing in the woods the next day.

Streamer thought he could go into this logically and nearly lost his mind doing so. I'm surprised at how many I got considering that some were easy and then others made no sense whatsoever although I'd imagine yukari and ran having different last names is because vulpine means fox and ran is a fox while yukari isn't, idk where indigo comes from though

Indigo is probably a reference to all of the Yakumos being named after colors, which was Yukari's doing so it would somewhat make sense for her to keep the theme, I guess. The weird parts are that Ran's name is the one that means Indigo (Yukari's is Violet), and Okina having the same last name as Yukari for seemingly no reason, lmao.

I remember watching the 4Kids dub as a wee lad, but the morning timeslot was a little inconvenient for my schoolboy age. I'm lucky enough that they'd do frequent reruns, they always love airing the O'Hara cafe episodes. Melissa used to be a childhood crush, even! Nowadays though, I watch on subs. Even though the localization butchered so much of the content with the censorship for western audiences, the dub always had a special place in my heart. Could do without the Karate Karen scripts though; that shit would NOT fly in 2025. But hey, product of its time
