It's a little nutty whenever I see Touhou pop up in my feed when it's not from a Touhoutuber because I always forget this franchise isn't as obscure as it once was. Before, people only knew like Bad Apple or, more recently, that one ShibayanRecords cover of Yuuka's theme from TH9. Anyway I hope you like it. Touhou 12 and 13 have some of my favourite tracks personally, though really I love all the music ZUN has cranked out over the years. If you decide to play this game on your other channel, be prepared to lose over and over and over and over.

I'd say it's more balanced than you'd think. Sure, there are a ton of western fans that never opened any of the games and are only in for the stale memes, but their percentage isn't higher than the percentage of fans who at least attempted to clear a game on Easy . Correct me if I'm wrong.

So, this particular song is really interesting to me how it works in the extremely traditional Japanese melodies and instrumentation, as well as the song's name. The character this serves as a theme to is Princess Kaguya, taken straight from one of Japan's most famous legends (but of course Touhou has its own spin on the character that turns everything up to 11 because of course), with the word Lunatic in Touhou not necessarily meaning "crazy person" but rather "someone from the moon" (Luna-tic), though the moon does drive people crazy, keeping that connotation as well.

Oh dang, I didn't think they'd bring out the Retrospective 53 Minutes version. Retrospective 53 Minutes is part of a musical album *series* that ZUN makes, if he can't quite attribute some tracks he makes to the games he makes. Instead, they have a small story with each track, often for a complete, larger story. Though at times he also includes tracks that *have* been put in the games already, often lightly rearranging them at that. Flight of the Bamboo Cutter is a good example of that, and Retrospective 53 Minutes has a LOT of tracks from Imperishable Night. Sidenote, the album series isn't all named Retrospective 53 Minutes. This album is named that because it is EXACTLY 53 minutes long. The other albums have differing names such as Magical Astronomy, or Changeability of Strange Dream, or my personal favorite, Neo-Traditionalism of Japan.
@KryptikM3
@KryptikM3 Жыл бұрын
Actually, I'm pretty sure this isn't the Retrospective 53 Minutes version because that one has a completely different intro, as it's slower tempo with flutes that speeds up into the song's normal tempo afterwards.

"The Touhou community is rampant" lol, sooo true. Like an army of piranha, except, instead of eating you, they keep trying to give you things and tell you about stuff. ......so now I'm gonna do that..... In regards to variations in music, Final boss themes are usually very similar, and are what people recommend most. (I believe Zun's intention is to add a feeling of nostalgia to reaching the end) Though he does have a strangely similar feel in everything I can't quite explain. There is a neat thing to be said about Shoot em Up music in general though, Stage themes are kinda unique for Shooters, while a boss fight song needs to loop, a stage theme on an auto scrolling game can be an exact length (though people do make loops of them) Heck, they can even match patterns to the music. I think Touhou's must famous example of this type is "Mystic Oriental Dream - ancient temple" and "Capital City of Flowers in The Sky" From Perfect Cherry Blossom. I know a game called Cotton Rock n Roll that used this technique for bosses too by putting them on timers. Anyway, this songs title is surprisingly simple to explain Something that can immediately be heard in the song when I say it, is that the title "Lunatic Princess" a double entendre Zun /translation uses sometimes Lunatic means crazy, and is a difficulty level, , but more interestingly, "Luna-atic". Meaning something that pertains to the moon. And suddenly the song sounds like space.

Ah, Lunatic Princess ~ Flight of the Bamboo Cutter, my personal favorite Touhou track ♥ I have so many rearrangements of this theme lying around and I just love it. I also like Touhou 8 the most of the games I've tried to play and maybe I'm a bit biased as its main themes are the Moon and the Princess on the Moon :'D And yaaay, the sunglasses! On the topic of mariachi arranges, funny enough I haven't listened to any myself, though I know for a fact there is a big-ish community in Guadalajara (considered by many the mariachi meca), so it wouldn't surprise me if some have been done in the past.

I still kind of remember the first time I managed to get through Imperishable Night (my first Touhou game) well enough to get the B route for the final stage. Kaguya shows up, there's some banter with my character duo. Music cuts out for like 2 seconds, then Flight of the Bamboo Cutter ~ Lunatic Princess starts playing. The intro part of it sound so different from what was there before. Been one of my personal favourites ever since.

The music composer, ZUN, is also the same person who makes the games, including all the art assets. He's got an artistic way of thinking. He even leaves his own music comments on a lot of his tracks, though much of it is mired in the contexts of Japanese culture and the games themselves. He's described the games as a vehicle for his music before, so it makes sense that he's meticulous about the songs he creates even though he's entirely self-taught in terms of music composition (albeit over the course of a few decades now).

So here's some Touhou lore about Kaguya. Just like in the tale of the Bamboo Cutter from remote times, she was exiled from the moon. At least in the game, it was because she drank the Hourai Elixir, which is literally a potion to be immortal (and that was made by her dear friend, Eirin Yagokoro, but she remained free, which made her remorseful). After that, the tale was something like the original. Reborn from a bamboo tree, adopted by a bamboo cutter, prettiest girl of the land, had a lot of pretendants, and sent them to find the five sacred treasures. A stone bowl from Buddha, on India; a jeweled branch from Mount Hourai, a robe of the chinese fire-rat, a jewel from a dragon's neck, and a cowry from a swallow. As a fun fact, no one could bring the treasures to Kaguya, so all they failed, but later on Kaguya would have all the treasures anyway, implying that she found all of them by herself. More on the treasures later. From here on, after a not-really-told encounter with the Emperor itself, the story has its own variant. Kaguya would enjoy the rest of the days at Earth, even if she was pardoned by the Lunarians (the moon people). They, however, believed the Earth was nothing but filth and impurity, so they really wanted to take Kaguya with them. However, Eirin was there on that moment as part of the emmisaries that wanted to take her, and still apologetic for not being punished, she decided to betray her own crew to escape with Kaguya into a land they would never find them: Gensokyo. Years passed, and the Lunar Capital became tired of sending emmisaries to find them without any success. Also, in a hundred years, Kaguya and Eirin, already established in the Bamboo Forest of the Lost, would meet Tewi, a youkai rabbit of good luck. However, the story would ramp again when a group of moon rabbits were send to the Earth as a response of the flag USA put in their territory on their first moon landing. Nevertheless, one of them, Reisen, was curious about how life was on the rumored lands of Gensokyo. Kaguya, Eirin and Tewi welcomed her with open arms, and they would leave happily once more... If the moon rabbits didn't contacted Reisen to join into another war. Kaguya and Eirin supported Reisen on her decision to retire from the army, but they feared that the lunarians were to find Gensokyo and declare a war on them. So, Eirin decided to create an illusion of the moon, so they could block the track between Gensokyo and the actual moon... Somehow. That lead to the events of Imperishable Night, and it ended with the plan being redundant when the Great Hakurei Barrier (it's origin located in the home of the protagonist Reimu Hakurei), so they were safe for the time being. Some other things happened on future games, but let's end it with her rival from eternity that wasn't mentioned yet. Remember the pretendants of the five sacred treasures? Well, one of them happened to be father of the hot-headed spiteful lucky bastard Fujiwara no Mokou. He was embarrased (presumably for life) after not returning with the treasure, which made his daughter grow hatred on the "lunatic princess". Some time passed on before she knew about the Hourai Elixir that Kaguya offered on her meeting with the Emperor itself. Long story short, she invaded the place with some bandits, there was some murder, she found the elixir, drank it, live a long time dwelling about the consequences of immortality for a human, and after a long time wandering from place to place, she finally moved to Gensokyo, where after 900 years she would encounter Kaguya. After that, they spent another three hundred years murdering themselves in spite of each other, but nowadays they're kinda chill with each other.

Touhou 8 is probably my favorite one, I love the scoring system. Also my favorite collection of music, though 7 is pretty strong too. 8 has this "spacey" feeling to it, the story dealing with the legend of the rabbits on the moon, but also with Princess Kaguya (The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter) which is one of my favorite legends, that the game kinda mixes with Chinese Chang'e goddess. Other stand out songs from 8 are "Lunatic Eyes ~ Invisible Full Moon", "Reach for the Moon, Immortal Smoke", "Voyage 1969/1970", and "Retribution for the Eternal Night ~ Imperishable Night", but really they are all good.

How nice of Touhou music to trigger a philosophical revelation this video. And yeah, it is great to see totally blind, raw reactions, and the fact people can enjoy these songs (Touhou music, and any other games music) with little to no context is just a testament to how evocative they can be on their own. And even if you'll forget it, a quick note on Retrospective 53 Minutes. This is an album from a series called ZUN's Music Collection, which is... Exactly what it sounds like. They're filled with remixes of songs from his games, as well as fully original tracks. (Plus some nice stories to go with them, but I won't get into those here.) I wonder if it would actually be okay to request a song from those albums... They aren't video game music, yeah, but they are still from ZUN... (And in my opinion, they have some of his best work.) Well regardless, hope you'll enjoy the next one.

Youre probably one of the only music react to tubers thats ever only react to stage and main screen theme of 2hus, maybe you wanna try Desire Drive or The Sea Where the Home Planet is Reflected(tamer remix of the more intense boss theme)

love your touhou reaction series!!! it's really wonderful to see another person who just purely enjoys the energy in music, your vids make me smile a ton ^-^ if you'd ever like to hear some crazy versatile music, i'd highly recommend some songs from Toram Online; specifically Irestida's theme, Gwaimol's theme, Gemma's theme, and ESPECIALLY Pedrio's theme :> please don't feel pressured to make a video on it or anything if you don't want to, I just adore these songs and they're very underrated, and I want to share them with people ^-^

on the topic of covers, touhou has a shit ton. My favorite ones are the house sets but there is jazz, metal, rock etc. Anything really. Because touhou music is such a vague genre it is very easy to make remixes and covers which go into all kinds of genres. Since you will probably get no requests for the remixes and covers of touhou songs you should check some out. You will definitely find something you like under metal.

Touhou music is really a one mystical rabbit hole imo. First you discover its music and found out it's a banger, then you may like try to play the game or watch someone play it to grasp the feeling of how you will feel when you play the game with that music, and then you can go deep into some lores and stuff then connect with the music (a lot of games do be like that) anyways I saw that you made a video reacting to one of the Super Robot Wars ost, which make me remember that there is a freaking SRW fangames (4 games total for the whole series) in the form of Touhou and have like 100+ banger tracks too.

There is no other fanbase that is as dedicated and devoted to its content, as the Touhou fanbase. It has admittedly died down in recent years. You could say the fanbase has sort of mellowed out, but the sheer amount of music arranges, animations, nearly professional-quality fangames, and all other miscellaneous fan-content, just completely dwarfs most other fanbases out there. And as the series is very much built around its music, the music arranges are so many, so diverse, and usually so high-quality, that you could probably just keep listening to Touhou music until the day you die, and have still have plenty you never got around to. Pick a track, pick a genre, search, and you'll probably find a whole list of arranges. Especially the more popular and well-known ones.

ZUN has such a huge library of songs with a lot of overlap in function/style but having only played DDC I'm pretty partial to that soundtrack for the context I have of when and where the tracks play. Stuff like the EoSD soundtrack is iconic but I'll never have that added factor of something like having my screen flip halfway into Reverse Ideology. I think ZUN is kinda screwed in that regard where context is largely irrelevant for a lot of listeners, since it really adds a lot to the songs in my experience. Just some light thoughts

If people know Touhou themes, they know either Lunatic Princess or Bad Apple, since these have gotten quite a bit of fame outside of the Touhou community.
