Touhou: Fantastic Danmaku Festival Part II - Extra Stage

𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘤𝘳𝘢𝘮𝘣𝘭𝘦𝘥 𝘴𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘴 𝘩𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘢 𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘧𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘦𝘹𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦
Stage wise the biggest thing to worry about is just keeping track of which enemies' blasts to dash far away from and which ones to stream. For the most part everything's just aimed at you in this stage. The second half of the stage gets a bit more cramped however as you move through jagged crystalline pathways like something out of Gradius.
Ran and Chen as mid-bosses aren't too bad, but their non-spells you'll have to look out for because of their odd nature. Both of them zip around quickly and as such, you need to dodge their attacks in a circular motion around the field as opposed to what you usually deal with.
With Yukari you basically need to be prepared for anything and everything, she fires a wide assortment of attacks and styles of danmaku bullets that you'll only see for single spells. An important thing to keep in mind, with the more animated bullets their hitbox is quite forgiving, so you won't be getting as walled as you may think. Also, as far as any curvy lasers/tentacles are considered, only the brightest glowing parts are the deadly zones. The entire tentacle if it's glowing solidly, but only parts of it if its glowing is staggered.

For Ran, it’s her connection with Buddhism as the nine-tail fox, for Yuyuko, it’s the image of the imperial princess, and for Yukari, it was the “outer being from the gap”.

I don't like how unclear the hitboxes are on the special bullets in this game, but at least here they have lenient hitboxes which helps.

Yukari would fit perfectly into a souls game, imagine a dark souls boss but constantly using gaps to teleport themselves and their attacks around, and gapping a train across an arena as an attack would work really well.

I've watched this stage being played by so many people, and I think this is the most informative out of all the videos. The strats for each spellcard, and especially the dialogue. I never knew Yukari was actually hesitant and wary of the foreign danmaku powers; thought she was actually enjoying toying with the incident solver and wanted to try it out herself. Well, maybe she does a little bit, but never hesitant. And the second final spellcard is rather nifty. Yakumo can also be read to mean "Old Spider" so she went and become Old Spider Yukari

I'm not sure about this Extra stage. On one hand I was able to clear it eventually, with all 4 characters no less, which is more than I can say for most extra stages I play. But this boss in particular throughly kicked my ass the whole way through, to the point that my strategy was to shore up on as many lives as I could during the stage, then brute force my way through as best as I can. Near all of her spell cards are a nightmare trying to dodge, and even with the realization that the hitboxes are smaller than expected, that doesn't help me getting real twitchy when a gaping maw is barreling towards me. ( I'm gonna be seeing Nyarlothep in my dreams, and not in the way initially intended) Though, one real helpful tip I discovered while facing her is that instead of putting up an immunity shield when you bomb, Yukari and the Phantasm boss simply have bomb resistance. Meaning, since each characters unfocused bomb allows free movement during the duration, you can continue to shoot the boss with your regular shot while the bomb clears out any bullets around you. Made this fight so much easier after finding that out.

Well it actually doesn’t come from here. It comes from Yukari herself (mostly her gaps). The whole basically being a god that deals with creepy eye portals, non Euclidean geometry and weird body stuff that could classify as body horror (like having extra hands come out of gaps or the fact she’s sometimes depicted as actually having nothing under her clothes and just having a gap there) is why people think it.

Love the music and style of this stage. One time I tried going for the no damage achivement for this stage and I nearly got it but lost a life at Domineering Spider Lady. I always lose a life on that spellcard.

I think that only French people may get it, but "Demon God "Messiah of the Olden Days""(12:38) reminds me of a particularly horrific moment in the comic book series "Les Légendaires". Also, why is Lovecraft's work is called "The Cthulhu Mythos" as a whole? I get that Cthulhu is kind of the face of Lovecraft's works, but there are other outherwordly entities like Nyarlathotep and The Color from "The Color Out of Space".

If you don't like the name August Derleth gave to the majority of Lovecraft's stories "The Cthulhu Mythos", you can always use the alternative: "Yog-Sothothry", given by Lovecraft himself. I feel like that name's more official and covers just about anything cosmicism related.

It’s a damaku game inspired by Touhou and Len’en, it’s still in its concept phase and I’m working on it with a friend, I’m in charge of characters and plot. It focuses on a Touhou SA style With a bit of Len’en RMI. And it’s far from demo. I was told to write down any ideas I have and we decided to plan out the major characters and only focus on the first game, so we’re focusing on balancing 6 characters. ...Omega? You said in that DM that you beat the extra on your first try, yet the attempt count says that you took at least five attempts overall and two on the final spell. That's definitely not first try material. But anyway, this stage. It's a case like the final stage where it's very split in quality. I like the stage portion with how it integrates the spirits from Stage 2, some references to PCB that are actually well-handled and not too in-your-face, and a seriously unique system with the electric barrier crystals. Also the nonspells in the midboss battles have a seriously good flow to them? But Yukari? As someone who seriously does not like creepy Lovecraft stuff, this boss fight definitely brushes me in the wrong way. Her theme is just bad and a lot of her attacks are straightup terrifying - and honestly quite a few of them are just plain cruel in the design department (Prison of the Outer Gods and Silver Keys to the Doors of Death can die in all of the fire). Not to say her entire fight sucks, I do like the odd few good spells. Namely Awakening of Terror (great reference to Dreamland of Straight and Curve), Exquisite Enigma of the Deep Sea (with its unique light mechanics) and Rampaging Jorougumo (a much-needed reference to a severely underrated Yukari spell).

I mean... keep in mind, just because I beat it on my first try, didn't mean that I was _recording_ then... I mean, I just skipped through all of the dialogue and went straight to the boss cause it was my first attempt/practice round. All attempts after that were unnecessary restarts cause I didn't like where I died (part of me was thinking of going for a perfect clear here). I didn't like that I died on Chen's spell card, so I reset, I didn't like that I died on Ran's spell card, so I reset, and I didn't that my second shot when recording against Yukari involved 5 deaths against Domineering Spider Lady cause I was being dumb. I still had more than enough lives to beat it even after that, but I felt that would make a poor video for the channel.
