May the dream be changed... The repeated phrase in ZUN’s lyrics is “yume tagae,” referring to a prayer to change the course of a bad dream, from a time when dreams were considered to be premonitions of reality. Naturally, you’d want to change a bad omen into a good one. But the Sealing Club also desires to take it a step further!
When Merry begins to feel caught between dreams and reality, she comes to ask her partner for advice. That partner, as always, is played by my one true partner, Lori ( / lori-hime ). Renko has two choices as a counselor: to convince her that her dreams meant nothing after all (so that she forgets all about it), or to convince her that they were indeed real (and thus run the risk of becoming lost to fantasy). She ultimately decides on an ideal third option: Keep dreams separate, but let them motivate you toward better and better things. This duet takes a rather solemn, reflective tone, but I think can be taken as very positive and meaningful, just like the way CoSD made me feel when I first read it.
I could never express enough thanks to ZUN, creator of the Touhou Project, for the endless stream of beautiful inspiration. Because this song is often considered to be "ZUN's theme," I made sure to use a few lines toward the end to subtly reference how amazing he is, and how his work reflects the very ideal of turning dreams into powerful reality.

Good to see you kicking after your hiatus! It resonated with all of me as well because people around me cringe at the sight of my express for love of this awesome franchise; where said people say it’s a franchise full of lolis and lolicons. But i feel so much at ease when I am with so many people, it’s like i’m on my own trip to Gensokyo where all of us likeminded individuals exist in one spot

This was such a moving piece...! The concept of dreams and reality intertwining is perhaps the most powerful and beautiful thing that Touhou has ever had to offer. I absolutely love the way you've worked with that here by taking the most deeply philosophical story from all of ZUN's music collections and putting it into lyrical form. And you even went and adapted the lyrics that ZUN wrote for it himself and worked them into this too! I think about how dreams and fiction interact with reality and how our dreams inspire us to change our realities all the time, so this song is especially meaningful for me. And I truly loved the dialogue between Maribel and Renko that you added... The delivery was incredible, and listening to it was a very emotional experience. Once again, I feel that this is one of your best covers yet. Congratulations for having created such a masterpiece, Lyrica and Lori!

In a way... Technically, they are references to places that Merry claims to have visited in her dreams, from the story of "Changeability of Strange Dream." She describes seeing a "stark red mansion, framed by a sparkling lake," and getting lost in a "bamboo forest like a maze." In turn, of course, this does imply that she went to the places where the incidents of EoSD and IN occurred. ^^

​@@galactica-rd6cv Oh, yes -- Actually, "spirits and flowers" was actually trying to throw a nod to PCB, to complete the trio of modern games that were out at the time of CoSD's release. PoFV wasn't out yet, so I wasn't thinking of it, but you're right; it definitely sounds like it can apply to that too! In general, the tantalizingly vague references they make to Gensokyo are one of my favorite things about the Sealing Club, so that's always cool to notice and to imitate.

This was actually a bit that was adapted from ZUN's own Japanese lyrics. The raw translation was: "This present world, sitting atop a crumbling foundation of sand. / In broad daylight, a town sinks." I interpreted it in a way that, when taken together with the other verse's parallel "old folk tale / in the dark of night" lines, contrasted the fall of reality with the rise of fantasy in Merry's perception. When you go into a dream and all the rules change, the real world suddenly doesn't matter anymore; it's that fragile. You can say in return that dreams and legends, for having staying power in people's memory and for escorting you into these brand new worlds, are sometimes more powerful than reality. Whenever day to night changes, the roles reverse, so it's very confusing for her. Something like that...

Gah! I ship these two WAY too effin' hard! Like, I know most of these lyrics are just allusions to the Sealing Club books and Mary's talks with Renko about her dreams/nightmares, but I just keep imagining Mary waking Renko up in the middle of the night, talking about her nightmares and Renko comforting her and helping her go back to sleep again. Just pure fluff stuff basically. (It also makes me ship you and Lori, and I'd feel terrible about shipping real life people if it wasn't for the fact that your ship has already kinda set sail.) Also, was the part between 3:00 and 3:22 a reference/tribute to ZUN -- what with this being his theme song and the entirety of the phantasmic wonderland with all of its wonderful inhabitants we're enjoying being born from his mind?

Thank you very much! Yes, this pixel art (drawn by Lori-hime) was specifically based on their outfits on the CD jacket of "Changeability of Strange Dreams." Some unique features include Merry's red eyes and side-bunched hair. The outfits also look similar to the ones from "Retrospective," you're right; maybe they were intended to be the exact same outfits. We can't be sure, since each girl is facing forward in one cover and backward in the other. Maybe CoSD-Renko ought to have the red stripes on her shirt, like she has in Retrospective, but we don't know because she's facing away. For the sake of distinction, so there would be unique art for every CD version of them, we used details like the red stripes on Renko's shirt only in the art for the "Retrospective" song videos (like "Neo Super-Express"), and assumed she didn't have the stripes here in CoSD.

Lyrica what voice changer do you uuuseee?? I've tried one but I cannot get the pitch right

I use the free program called Audacity. (Effect > Change Pitch) I import the instrumental track and pitch it _down_ by 2 semitones. Then I put on headphones and sing along to that. Then I pitch my recording _up_ by 2 semitones. So now my recording matches the original instrumental, but with a higher voice than I could normally achieve! It's a bit complicated, sorry... But it works for me. I might guess that your problem of "not being able to get it right" has to do with the fact that you are changing your own voice without changing the original instrumental, so it doesn't match in the end? That's why I do my weird back-and-forth thing.
