A sad day, as I was always a LeMond fan. And because it is often thought to be the start of a somewhat dubious era in cycling. Interesting, however, that Mottet, whose rep was as clean as Greg, managed 4th.

Yeah, but he was just hanging onto Bugno. The first 3 riders that day looked like they had motors.

True, but he also benefitted by the fact no one was marking him on any stage, and on a few more he followed wheels. Still, would have been fascinating to see a clean Tour this year, and a race between he and LeMond.

This is one of the most dramatic, but also one of the worst days in cycling history. Honest talent beaten by doped up cheaters. Cycling was never 100% clean, but this was an abrupt turn of the tide from one of the cleanest eras, to one of the dirtiest that quickly followed.

Big changes on the doping front, from the old system of growth and repair of muscle tissue with anabolic steroids to increased red blood cell production and increased oxygen transport with improved aerobic performance with EPO.

No it wasn't........PDM were on it in 1990 and messed up in 1991 so they all got 'sick' and went home because they didn't know how to use it properly....hence team doctors being hired. Before EPO we had blood doping which was just as good. Armstrong used blood doping instead of EPO (which does the same thing) from 2001 on, because they discovered a valid test for EPO, as we know blood doping served him just as well if not better. Here's the thing about the Tour being ridden faster....it wasn't, the route was just getting easier.....I'll show you: Greg Lemond would have you believe EPO made everyone go that much faster or that doping pre EPO just wasn't effective........ Flip back to the 70's 1970.........35.5 but eight Mountain Stages 1971.........38.0 eleven Mountain stages! 1972..........35.4 eight Mountain Stages. 1973..........33.9 eleven Mountain stages with six averaging around 230 km. The rest of the 70's mostly had eight Mountain Stages in each Tour. Then the 80's 1981..........37.98 Five Mountain stages 1982..........37.47 Five Mountain stages Lemond's victories 1986...........37.02 Five Mountain stages 1989...........37.48 Six Mountain Stages and a Mountain Time Trial Roach's victory 1988...........38.90 Four Mountain Stages The 1990's Lemond's victory 1990..........38.62 Four Mountain Stages Indurain 1991..........38.74 Four Mountain Stages 1992..........39.50 Two Mountain Stages In 1993 Lemond compete due to not being in condition. In 1994 Lemond came off before the mountains. Tom Simpson had three tubes of amphetamines in his back pocket when he died on the roadside; two were empty one was half empty. Gimondi tested positive twice. Eddy Merckxx was disqualified for doping three times and asked to stay away from the 2007 World Championships because of it. Joop Zoetemelk admitted to using it in 1976, 77, 79 and 83. Moser used it in 1984 for his Hour Record. Pretty much every champion through cycling history doped and Lemond wants us to believe he's the only one who didn't. I call bullshit. As you can see doping and the Tour went hand in hand well before Lemond and the speed only went up as the course became easier. Lemond is trying to use his immunity from testing due to time elapsed to claim he was the last clean champion and to smear his successors. Pretty creepy. All the rest doped and Lemond was superman.......sure he was!.
