I rode with a veteran of old tours. In the race he drank some red wine, cracked a raw egg in the bottle, topped it off with water, shook it up, and stuck it in his jersey. there were no service cars, riders carried their own spares and to eat you rode off the front, pulled into cafe, ate, then caught back up to peloton after they passed you while you ate. When I knew him, dude was 70+ and rode 200 hard ks with multiple mountain passes around Zurich, every sunday, on a donated kidney.

Loved it when sports were like this. Don't get me wrong, the things we can do right now are absolutely impressive and way out of the scope of what you could do back then. But there is a sense of homeliness, when things used to be like this. Things, like sports, felt less mechanical, less optimized, and more fun (albeit maybe more dangerous). It's a beautiful thing!

My favourite high school French teacher was an old Tour rider in the 80s who won the Chemise Jaune. He moved to North America after retiring from cycling to teach French language, literature, history and social studies. I remember going to academic conferences (field trips) in the 90s and all the female French teachers from other schools swooning and flirting with him as an old sports celebrity. Handsome, jovial, friendly man who took an interest in me as a young student athlete while I was going through some troubling family issues at home. My life could have gone very dark without him. Merci, M. Guy LeGentil.

Don't underestimate how hard professional cycling was in 1962 (when this was filmed) - these guys were not out on a club ride- they were hard men riding at the absolute limits of what they could take physically, on crappy roads with very few 'creature comforts' of any sort. Yes the sport was different, and the world was different but "fun" or "chill"? My mother is from a small village close to Pézenas in the south of France, an area where people drink more wine than water. In the 40s, as a teenager, she used to work in the vineyards. One hot day of summer, the Tour de France came in the village. Of course the riders raided the local pub. One rider was already drunk, drank more wine, and had to make a break at the exit of the village. Quickly he fell asleep under a tree. About 2 hours later, he woke up and was fit enough to ride again, alone... Surprisingly, that day, this drunk rider won the stage : all the others had taken the wrong way and got lost !

I love this intensity of 'real race'. Sportmanship. Nowadays, it is about Garm!n, shapes of brand new shoes, all those gadget....even for beginner runner. Kinda discouraging Heck, I loathes it! I used to join it 2016 - 2020 but I do not find any interesting reason to participate in marathon anymore. Just do it personally. The situations ---- HEAVILY changed

There is some steep road that goes through a mountain nearby where a lot of people on Sundays will go and bike or walk it. My old brother-in-law was starting to get in shape and invited me and friend of his biking with him thinking he was going to show us up. I was fine especially seeing my brother-in-law struggling and sweating. But the funniest thing ever was his friend was smoking cigarettes in jeans while the rest of his six-pack was hanging off the handlebars

Lovely video! Nowadays it's more professional and though I'm not really into nutrition etc., it amazes me how TdF riders manage to put 8,000-10,000 calories into their emaciated bodies every day. Half of which they have to consume during the race, while the body is in 'performance mode', not 'recovery mode'. Seems like a strong stomach is the most important in Grand Tours, after that the heart and mind, and only then it comes down to the legs who wins.

You might enjoy the Irish sport known as Hurling. All of the players are amateur (in the essence that they are not paid money to play otherwise they would be considered professional.) It's the fastest sport on grass, and its history is a few thousand years. I love watching the players run full speed while balancing the sliotar on the end of the hurley. They would crush everyone in egg spoon races; their balance is that good.
