Tour of EMEAPP featuring KEITH EMERSON's Moog! Tons of gear from Zappa, The Who, ELP, Yes and beyond

Please subscribe!! Join Executive Director, Drew Raison, on a rare tour of the Electronic Music Education and Preservation Project's facility, chock full of rock and electronic music history. This is a replay of a Zoom meeting hosted by Alan Lenhoff for the Combo Organs Forum that ran on January 28th, 2021.
This facility tour covers many of the spaces within EMEAPP's 30,000-square-foot facility that contains a curated collection of historically significant musical equipment. Special exhibits include Frank Zappa, The Who, Steve Howe and Rick Wakeman from Yes.
But the highlight is seeing and hearing Keith Emerson's stage rig, complete with his 1904 Steinway and customized Hammond organs. Overlooking everything is Keith's legendary Moog modular synthesizer.
In addition, you can see parts of EMEAPP's extensive collection, including vintage gear from Marshall, Hiwatt, Orange, Sound City, Fender, Vox, Park and more. The effects pedal collection runs deep and includes some of the earliest fuzz boxes, modulation pedals, spring reverbs and tape echos.

I see I am not the only person who noticed at 1:10:35, the iconic Persian carpet used by Greg Lake when he was on tour with ELP (the Persian carpet covered the rubber mat, that was used to ensure that Greg did not get electrical shocks from his microphones). A decidedly low tech item in your collection no doubt, but a very special piece of Rock music history. And to have Greg's Persian carpet in such close proximity to Keith's modular Moog............it just seems so perfectly appropriate. I hope I can visit your facility in person someday soon.

Regarding that Hammond Chop: I'm missing some details but the story is basically this: That design was indeed created by a guy in Germany I believe by the name of Bertram, sometime in the 80's. He's the guy that made Barbara D's hammond that you see her playing often. It's often mistaken for not being a real Hammond because both manuals have MIDI somehow. But it is absolutely the real deal. Another guy (who's name I don't remember) in Munich started mass producing those cases / chops under the name The Hammond Store in the ~late 90's - and ended up having a US business partner. John @ The Hammond Store in Southington, CT made those chops there from ~early 2000's til about 2012 when he decided to close the business. Among his clients were legendary keyboardist Don Airey of Deep Purple, who still tours and records with the rig he acquired from John in the late 00's early '10's. You can see that rig in many many videos of Purple over the last decade. I know all this because of the hundreds of chops John made, I have #18..

Hi, Dave! Thanks for reaching out. Keith actually owned this instrument since 1970, the modifications were done by Al Goff at Goff Professional. The case is that of the original instrument. MIDI has not been added to this organ but it had been added to his 1904 Steinway Model B grand piano that also appears in the video. Al debriefed us on the electronic process and we applied it to our Barbara D Hammond in our workshop. The results were spot-on! @@emeapp Hey Drew! Very Cool and thanks for the reply. To clarify, in my above post, I was talking bout the "Barb D" Chop you have, Not Keith's Chopped C3. I will reach out via email for sure and connect! I know all about Goff Proff and Keith's mighty rig - I grew up 10 minutes from their shop in Newington CT - I even got my very first hammond related axe, and XK2 from Dave (Al's nephew) when I was in high school. A few years later I got my A100 Chop from John @ The Hammond Store since as you can see that particular chop with the removable legs and peculiar volume pedal design is great for gigging without roadies haha. Still have it too :)
