I lived in a remote cabin above Cuba for a severe winter. I was snowed in for three months, melted snow for water, and hauled in my food through waist high snow. Coyotes, cougars and elk kept me company. Oh that silence. Happy trails!

Kelly! So glad you discovered and were able to take some respite at the Ranch. I live about an hour from there in Cuba. My kids grew up visiting GR in the summers and I’ve attended numerous summer courses there since 1978. There’s a great book on the Ranch that you may have seen in the little store in the headquarters by Lesley Polling-Kempis. CDT hikers ordinarily pass in front of my house on their way through Cuba. I’ll say Hi if I happen to see you lumbering by.

I actually have seen a floating tree in a lake. It was completely vertical with the root ball just barely at the surface. My Chief Ranger and I tied a marker float on it.

Hey Kelly, a trick I do when I have little water is to hold it in my mouth for awhile before swallowing. Coats your mouth and gives the perception of more hydration 👍
