Nice useful kit! I'd add a box of stickies and small keychain scissors (like the Victorinox Classic) to cut them depending on your needs. Usually they work great for lavs and overcovers, but they're also really useful for hiding mics on things. Ps: overcovers work great to remove clothes rustle and protect the lavs from the wind. Also, the vampire thing is great for buttoned shirts in some cases (like if the talent will spend the day wired in hot weather).

Those rubber bands are actually not rubber bands. They are O-Rings. Replacements can be found at any hardware type store like Ace, Lowes, or even your local Mom & Pop hardware store. Also you made me think. I am a stills guy that decided to open up my services line by expanding into video. I also have a couple Sony Lavs, but had not thought about the wipe thing. I will have to look into that for sure.

mini deadcat windscreens for lav mics are called "dead kittens" (really). surprised you don't have the Sennheiser MZW-2EW Steel Mesh Windscreen; there is absolutely no rustling. i used them on stunt guys with perfect audio.

A long thin microphone like the first RØDE mic you pulled out (and the mic in the front of your bag) should ideally be in a hard case/sleeve for better protection. Plus having all the gear and equipment is cool, but carrying a lot of unnecessary gear all the time is really inefficient in my opinion...three decades as a touring live sound guy has taught me that it's a lot better to prepare for each gig/tour by bringing only what you absolutely need supplemented with a few must have spares. Extra stuff means more things to get lost, more weight to load you down and more weight to pay for when you fly...pack wisely.

I scored some sweet padded and pocketed soft cases that are shaped more like an oversized attaché. I scour the surplus stores for stuff like that. $14 and I checked online they were a legit $100 or more so I bought 3 identical. I like being able to flip it open and see what's in there instead of digging down like what's required with a deep camera bag. My other point being, :) - I can pack a bag for live entertainment recording and a second case for video shoot audio. The expensive digital gear gets moved back and forth but the microphones, adapters and cables are different most of the time, eg. heavy and long XLR cables for mixers and amp line outs vs. fiddly little camera, lav and wireless connections. Happy happy.

G'day Caleb, thanks for putting this up. As a newbie to this whole field it was interesting to see the logic behind your choices. Sorry if this is covered in your GH4 guide. I'm intentionally delaying buying that course for a few more weeks as I'm suffering a bit of information overload as it is to be honest*. However in just trying to play with this camera, editing, etc etc, I've realised all the advice I've read regarding audio is spot on, and the onboard audio is crap, especially in any wind. One of my first accessories purchases (well other than a good video tripod/fluid head, I now have), is therefore a good microphone. I know you like the Rode Video Mic Pro. If you could have just one microphone (in this case my first), would the Videomic Pro still be your choice? I believe Rode now has other somewhat similarly priced alternatives but with different audio patterns, so perhaps if you had to start again your choice may be different. Or not! Incidentally, it's nice to see a company not very far from me doing so well, so hats off to Rode. Likewise keep up the great videos, as they certainly help people like me get on top of all of this information and begin making sense of what is or maybe isn't important. *Edit: I reconsidered and tried to clear out some brain space by deleting old items and have just subscribed to the GH4 guide. Now, if my brain explodes I'm blaming you Caleb Pike ;)
@dslrvideoshooter9 жыл бұрын
+Pete F Haha! I hear you on the brain overload. So much to learn! Thanks for picking up the guide! As for a microphone I would without hesitating pick up a Rode VideoMic Pro. I've gone on shoots and only used that mic. It really is a jack of all trades.

Super helpful videos, Caleb. Just discovered this channel. Subscribing was to easy. I'm sure you receive gear questions quite often. If you don't mind an unrelated question re: your A7SII/FS5 video - is your Canon C100 your primary camera for KZbin/professional work and, if so, is your familiarity with Canon enough to keep you in that ecosystem? Feel no pressure to have a definite answer as I certainly don't. I ask because after using the C100MKII on a few company shoots, its ergonomics, UX/UI, and native compatibility with L glass appeal to my emotional satisfaction. However, the no-brainier appeal of higher 4K (for punching in) and 120fps (not everyday use, but valuable considering the long-term financing commitment) win over my pragmatic desires. I'm not asking for any man to decide for me per se. But if you've ever had any stray thoughts on the matter that you wouldn't mind sharing, I'd count it as valuable.

+Satchbag's Goods I use a C100 because it was cheap ($3000 with extra batteries) I am seriously looking into the A7sII but like many folks, I don't have that kind of cash sitting around. Wife, house and kid on the way! I also use a couple GH4 bodies a lot.

Hey! Caleb, or anybody with helpful advice, I am very interested in the video world. I have sony movie studio platinum 13 to edit with and a Sony nex-6 camera. Plus I also have a ride video mic and zoom h1 recorder. I really like being in front of the camera, behind the camera, writing for the camera, and editing the footage. With that being said, I was wondering since I have an interest in most of the production fields, which would be best to go into all around (based on enjoyment, payment, and stability. I'm only 16 so any helpful info for the future would be appreciated. Thanks :)
@mattboymatt9 жыл бұрын
+Lizardstuffryan Id say the most stable is video editor, theres new gear coming out all the time that is replacing in some cases people (such as 3 axis gimbals) but it depends how much you enjoy sitting in front of a computer all the time. Writing for the camera is fairly stable, theres always a demand for all types of screenwriting and if youre into creative writing youll love it. Being behind the camera is, for me the most enjoyable place, if youre a gearhead and really into getting truely immersed in the production. Being in front of the camera is also very enjoyable but not that stable at all. its all about being in the right place at the right time. Im not even going to talk about payment because it shouldnt be important. Go with what you like best and make a living out of it along the way!

So let me understand - you are a skilled professional heavily plugging products and yet you depend upon really poor quality cheap nasty cables, mid range microphones to capture your sound and poor quality SD cards to secure your recordings! As you are earning as a professional why are you not investing in higher quality microphones to maximise the quality of your recordings (Sennheiser, DPA and Schoeps for example due to low self noise and high resolution), high quality reliable SD cards (SanDisk Pro) to ensure recording data integrity, a high quality protective audio bag (K-Tek or Orca) to protect your valuable recording gear and high quality battery, distributor and charger (Audioroot or Inspired Energy) to ensure reliable power for all your gear. A higher quality audio recorder would also help! Perhaps learn to solder (as many studio professionals do) to assemble high quality custom cables or buy some custom cables made with high quality connectors (Neutrik, Rean, Switchcraft) and cable (Sommer, Van Damme, Belden etc). I would not be as critical if you weren't advising others on best choices (and gear pimping) when your own choices are really not to be recommended! Invest in your craft and spend less time peddling poor advice.
@Hank2546 жыл бұрын
This is a 'Tour of my audio bag' video, not a 'best choices for audio gear' video. If you want to make the latter, feel free but there is nothing wrong with the stuff he is showing for the average videographer. And as for 'quality'... I have had a Sandisk Pro card fail on me (after about 3 weeks of use) so throwing money away on expensive gear is not always going to save you. What are the problems you hear in the audio of this video?
@whysguy5 жыл бұрын
First, for a guy being critical of plugging products, SeveBC, you sure do a lot of it yourself. Caleb is just offering a look into what he packs and why, something that folks shooting with DSLRs can use (I’m gonna take a wild guess that your snobby superior audio gear isn’t routinely paired with DSLR video). Not everyone has unlimited funds to assemble the ultimate audio kit, so seeing Caleb’s choices is far more relatable than your holier-than-thou attitude. Anyway-thanks, Caleb!
