I am just getting into location sound. I find your expertise as someone who works in the field very useful and I am thankful you seem to have decided to set aside dedicated time to explain what you do. I have come back to your videos a number of times because there are things I find in here that come from field experience that you just can't get elsewhere. Thank you.

I understand the gear part, I have a Tascam DR-680 and the plan for this year is a MixPre 10T (I don't do films just yet, mostly ads and interviews). It takes time and it helps you learn, learn your gear, struggle with it, learn to make it work with you and you shall be rewarded and by the time you get to the upper class of gear, it will be simpler, I've used CRAPPY lavs and also G3 and once I used Zaxcom (now I crave those) and also Lectro. Thanks for sharing Rodolfo

I work and worked with everything from the zoom f8 to the 788, 688, deva etc. if you know the strength and flaws of equipment, all can function perfectly for our purpose in movie or television projects. You are right about the snobby attitude in the "pro" location sound world. I always compare it with the music studio businesses, you have guys swearing they need vintage Neumann mics, neve consoles etc so make a great sounding record. In the meantime acts like Adele are using cheap ass Rode microphones and winning Grammys :). Oh, and I got once a recorder fail on me, and that was the most expensive Sound Devices, the 788t, go figure.

Totally man knowing you gear it’s the best advice, The Gear sure provides some peace of mind “sometimes” but trouble shooting and being on your feet it’s way better than the latest and greatest tool in my opinion !

I worked with many recorders and my thoughts are the same. right now I'm using a zoom f8n, it's a great machine, It is not "solid" about battery longevity but overall I cant say its a product for amateurs.

Some boom poles are super sensitive and pick up all sorts of bumps and noise especially when you're on the go and I wondered how your chosen boom poles are for handling noise? Great videos btw!!!

Can you tell me the name or how to find the small accessory below the invision suspension? I am using, for the radio, a BP4025 and I am looking to eliminate some cable noise (xlr5). Thank you.

Try the the Mkh 8060, i bought it instead the Cmit. Main reason was the reach, rf sealing, size and of course the price. I like the sound of the Cmit, but the Mkh 8060 is the better overall packet in my opinion. But the Sanken is a Good mic as well. :) Greetings

Great video Rodolfo. I'm in the process of building my kit. I bought the 668 + SL6 combo. I have my Orca-32 and my powering all sorted, went with SWIT np1s by the way. The next bit of gear I'm going to be buying is my boom-pole, wind protection and indoor and outdoor microphones. I'm thinking I'm going with the Sanken CS3e for my shotgun, and Schoeps CMC641 for indoor and Cinela wind protection. My question to you is what would a good size boom-pole if Im only going to buy one? A nice all-rounder?

It kinda depends on your style of shooting, but I’ll say a 10 footer it’s a safe length for most scenarios

Thanks for yours advices and list of stuff! This will be very helpfull! I'm buying step by step my own material but it takes too long! ^^ I also started with a H6 out of school and I upgraded recently to a F8 (one day I will have my own Cantar *_*)! I'm pretty happy about the solutions and quality of the F8 when you take a look at the ration Price/Quality!

Great video. What do you think about Bose noise cancelling headphones? Are they good for set?
@RLFOSOUND
@RLFOSOUND 6 жыл бұрын
I tried once but it feels really weird and you get headaches, I would recommend closed headphones so you can really listen to your microphones and listen to the environments around your set !
@RLFOSOUND
@RLFOSOUND 6 жыл бұрын
Noise cancelling headphones cancel exterior noises actually so you can get dive into the sonic experience. I would use some closed headphones instead
@RLFOSOUND
@RLFOSOUND 6 жыл бұрын
Actually if you are in a really noisy environment remote audio makes really good quality headphones that cancel exterior noises for extreme recording sessions like gunshots and really loud sources

Great video! I'm curious to know what your priority in gear purchase has been since you started. Did you start by getting the 633? While you saved up for the next thing, did you rent the wireless sets and mics? Or did you purchase cheap gear at first and slowly upgrade each item? - thanks and keep up the good work.
@RLFOSOUND
@RLFOSOUND 7 жыл бұрын
I got the 633 first hence it was the most expensive to rent and The most important thing, I got a shotgun mic after that with a pole and wind protection and I use that for everything indoor and outdoor for a long time I think I should do a video about this it’s a great idea for One :) cheers

Is interesting to buy the recorder first, when it might be the part which depreciates the fastest? I reckon either way with the order can make logical sense to a person.
@SoundSpeeding
@SoundSpeeding 7 жыл бұрын
Back when you graduated there were lots of cheaper options from Roland or Tascam you could have gone with instead of the Zoom H6. (or course these days the Zoom F4 is the way to go! When starting out on a strict budget) Why didn't you go with them instead of an H6? Curious btw, getting all that gear within four years is a pretty quick progression! Good work man. Wondering also why you purchased the 702, was it before you got the 633? As I couldn't see a big reason why you'd want a 702 if you already owned a 633
@RLFOSOUND
@RLFOSOUND 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah at the beginning I was more into field recording than location work so I wanted a hand help portable recorder then the gigs start coming and I had to think of something so I start using my h6 , also the 702 it’s not mine I borrow it to record the comparison video hahaha I forgot to mention that 🙂 yeah its been pretty good so far :) happy with the evolution of my kit ❤️

I asked an audio guy if he would ever get a Shoepps or anything other than a 416 and he said that he's never been asked to use anything other than a 416 so why spend extra cash to buy a Shoepps if the production doesn't care what mic to use and it wouldn't add too much to the paycheck as an investment? Very business minded answer. I'd take the CMIT over the 416 almost every day but I see his point. what do you think? (he's works mostly in reality TV)
@RLFOSOUND
@RLFOSOUND 7 жыл бұрын
The cmit sounds great but it’s a delicate mic specially when shooting outside on wet conditions, I like the 416 it’s a great mic, at the end of the day it’s a preference right he could use a rode ntg it really doesn’t matter, if he keeps getting gigs and he is happy with what’s he’s capturing, I don’t see the point to upgrade. ;) I like to buy the expensive stuff cause I have a sickness hahahaha 😞
