you are one of the best KZbinrs for this kind of stuff I have seen thus far! Not corny, no useless overpowering background music, not putting on a show trying to sell anything, - yet informative, quite skilled, straight to the point and very interesting! 👌

This video has made me think very very hard about the best times of my life and these images was where it happened. I've stood, walked, hiked, drove, jogged, bike toured, swam, and dove all over the Big Island but it was these sides of the island I first fell in love with, the jungle side! During the early middle 90's I was hoping to be a marine biologist and failed at math but the coral reefs was my love. One day I got invited to stay in Pahoa with a friend for a few weeks and the moment I saw "Yellow Tangs" right at the edge of the beaches I was in love. I was taken everywhere in Hilo side after a brief visit to Kona from the airport. The stress and anxiety was all gone. My mind was so happy with thoughts of healthy thinking and positive physical fitness amenities without any need for fancy expensive resorts/hotels, I saw life in everything I saw. My friend lived in a house full of moss all around, bright green ghecko lizards all over, mushrooms growing out of parts of his house and indoor, the dirt was red, the wonderful aroma of mist and rain was incredible and the evening sang non stop from the creatures, I slept like a baby. Morning came and it was coffee time then for a long long walk followed by brunch. Everyday it was either hiking boots or some leather velcro tie flip flops. I would go visit the Hilo Community College and dreamed of going to school and studying agriculture, construction, farming, and Hawaiian Culture/History. I was often asked if I was local because of my skin, it had gotten very dark fast and was treated nicely everywhere I went. Yes, I do recall a few of my friends friends looking a little shady but kept a distance and moved on. My friend was blond haired and blue eyed gringo and I was a dark frijol eating Mexican. I've been struggling with life far too long, where to live and move permanently lately more than ever. My move anywhere takes lots of planning because I am under SSI disability and I also have a paid for house not under my name in Colorado and am told I can have the house put under my name and sell it but SSI says I need to spend that sale within 30 days so I could actually have my own land and live totally off grid and continue getting my disability income in Hawaii I was told by SSI office. Ya know, and after seeing this video and crying a few times from so many reminiscences and kicking my self in the ass by not staying there the first time I went there I have been roaming around on the main land unhappy and failed at many things for over 30yrs. The first time I went to Big Island was over 17yrs and ever since then it's been a dragging life and a very sad one but have never felt more happy in my life anywhere else than in Hawaii. I was also very fortunate to know a wealthy retired male who paid for many trips to Big Island and saw so many things including a helicopter ride over the active volcano, thanks to him, both friends actually. I've gone to Cozumel, Key West and Cancun but nothing like the Big Island. I wake up every God dam day here in Colorado to cold weather and nowhere to go, I live in a desolate dreary far town with only one mfkng traffic light! A lot of careful planning and decisions need to be meticulously reviewed so I can safely sell this house and get out of this town. I can just taste that rain water and mist when it rains but its so far to reach!~

djpaulywood awesome! Can you tell me what made it life changing? Because I'm going through a funk and desperately need to grow as person and as man. I look forward to a life changing experience! I was offered a place to stay in puna from a couple who lives in los angeles half time and in puna half time. Im a little disappointed that there's not a lot of nice white sand beaches in puna like on Maui and Oahu. Regardless I'll be taking on that offer because it's a dream to live in Hawaii. I'll also build a life around my stay in puna! Mahalo!
@djpaulywood7 жыл бұрын
John T. It's hard to explain you just have to go and find it it just happens the whole place is another world even though it's like a little tiny North America built into one tiny Island it's amazing you have to explore the whole islands itself. There are white sand beaches there you just have to go to the right place. What I did is went on Google Maps satellite version and scanned all the coast to find the secret hidden spots. Great spot I found is Makalawena Beach. You park at one spot then you walk to the first Beach and then you have to make another long Trek to the Makalawena spot. It's just north of Kona International Airport. I could go on for hours about all the different gray spots that I ventured to. Definitely take advantage of that if somebody's going to let you stay at a spot and if you do let me know I'll come and visit if I can LOL
Uncle roberts is really fun on sun and wed nights too south of puna
@johnt.19477 жыл бұрын
djpaulywood thanks so much for taking the time to reply and providing me with great info! I'll definitely take on the offer. And sure you're more than welcome to visit. I'll even comment here regardless of what island I end up living on! Thanks again!

do people ride bicyles on the big island much, ?? are there bike paved bike trails? i'm 64 don't want off road type stuff. thanks
@jamesf20167 жыл бұрын
Dave Fyffe I know in Maui people would rent bicycles and take bus up mountain and ride down. when I was there (Maui) some people would commute by them, but mostly kids.
@headbangerministries7 жыл бұрын
Hi, I actually did a bike ride from Kona to Hilo. I rode back Kona but took a wrong turn and rode up the old airport road on new years eve and all my power lights died in the middle of a huge rain fall. I had not one problem riding the bike but I did look like a tour bike rider with hazard lights and trailer "The Bob" with my tent and other things. I rented once a house for a week and a half in some estates near Puna and walked around so much that there was hardly anyone around and regret not renting a bike. Around the small roads once in. In the Kona side traffic was much faster and also the roads seemed more narrow and everyone was like in a hurry and this was riding a rental scooter so I can imagine how uglier it might have been with a bike!~

Back in the late '90s I spent a month renting a little cabin in the Puna area within walking distance of Pahoa (Opihikau Rd.). Very geologically rugged and unique place, kind of like a different planet in some ways. It's my understanding that Pahoa and most of the Puna area got buried/cremated underneath masses of lava during those disastrous 2018 Kilauea (sp?) eruptions, including the Red Road with all its massive sea cliffs I always loved. Is that correct?
