At least this wasn't the infamous "My humble homelab" video where the person has more gear than a good portion of smaller businesses with 4 fully filled racks sitting in their own climate controlled room.

the fans are spinning, and with minimal load on the UPS its pretty silent.

How much watts that beast is eating (heating lol)?? Is your crypto or solar system can cover that power consumption?
@dogelord20008 ай бұрын
I live in California. Power rates are awful. I’ve downsized my home lab into Intel NUCs and raspberry pi5. Footprint reduce tremendously along with power consumption.
@GeekOfAllTrades8 ай бұрын
That's what I'm thinking I will do as well. Start some videos on power optimization, with meters on the boxes to show consumption, real data.

Great video! Nicely explained what it is about. A lot of gear to play with, I'm jealous. Only thing that is strange is referring to Storage Array as SAN. It can be a part of a SAN but without fiber-channel backbone it is just regular server, even you mentioned what is a SAN in showing DELL server, separate network just for storage. And 3D pritner farm ... now I'm super jealous.

Great video. Gave me some great ideas on what to look for and what I want to do. I'm not so much a network guy , just a miner that wants to get into more AI stuff and diversify myself and gear. Thanks again for the video!!!

Is a coupler style patch panel better than a punch down style? I've used both but never really put any thought into it.
@danbulmerАй бұрын
typically it's just easier and looks tidier in the end. No special tools required. I use them on my rack. plus i use different colored keystones that immediately alert me as to the vlan i have on each port.

I've never used TP link. Is TP good. I would think with all the $$ in graphics cards you could afford 1,000$ in Unifi equipment. A couple switches, AP and UDM pro

TP Link with Omada is just fine for home use and small businesses. No need to spend the type of money Unifi requires.

Well I would say downsizing is a good idea. LOL That is a neat set up for sure. I went through that several years ago. I have access to clients discarded rack servers too. Our boneyard has dozens of old servers in it. What I learned after paying some absurd electric bills is that it was kind of silly for me to have that much stuff. So what is my home lab now? A Lenovo mini pc with a 2Tb SSD drive and Proxmox. Now I'm not doing any crypto mining so I get why you would want high end equipment for that. But for just experimenting with new configurations it works perfectly and my electric bill is much happier.

Overkill? Nah, I have a 3u patch panel and at least 3 switches in my rack. Through in a few 4u or 5u cases, pdu and you are done. It is surprisingly easy to fill up the whole 42u rack :-) You need a pull-out KVM console in that rack, though.

To paraphrase Hannibal Lecter: What does he do? What is the first and principal thing that he does? What need does he serve by having a Homelab? He Covets. How do we begin to covet? We begin by coveting what we see every day. You have built a homelab from what you have seen and coveted. You suggest the next thing is to build something that shrinks power, memory, connectivity, increases speed ...............but to do what? What have you seen? What is it that you covet? Think about that and you will have your answer.
