Thailand is home to over 40,000 Buddhist temples, but none of them is quite like Wat Plai Laem. Completed in 2004, the site is a collection of temples and statues located on Koh Samui, Thailand's second largest island. Wat Plai Laem's temples are active, set in a tranquil location, where quiet reflection is encouraged and appropriate attire is a must. One of the temple's most eye-catching figures is a nearly 100-foot tall statue of Buddha, painted in bright red, white and gold. But the main statue is the Buddhist goddess of compassion and mercy, Guanyin. There, she is represented with 18 arms, which shows her ability to help many people in need at once.

So he broke them to pieces, (all) except the biggest of them, that they might turn to it. 59. They said: "Who has done this to our aliha (gods)? He must indeed be one of the wrong-doers." 60. They said: "We heard a young man talking (against) them who is called Ibrahim (Abraham)." 61. They said: "Then bring him before the eyes of the people, that they may testify." 62. They said: "Are you the one who has done this to our gods, O Ibrahim (Abraham)?" 63. [Ibrahim (Abraham)] said: "Nay, this one, the biggest of them (idols) did it. Ask them, if they can speak!" 64. So they turned to themselves and said: "Verily, you are the Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers)." 65. Then they turned to themselves (their first thought and said): "Indeed you [Ibrahim (Abraham)] know well that these (idols) speak not!" 66. [Ibrahim (Abraham)] said: "Do you then worship besides Allah, things that can neither profit you, nor harm you? 67. "Fie upon you, and upon that which you worship besides Allah! Have you then no sense?" I pray to the true one and only God Allah guides us all. Ameen Love and Peace... Worship of Guanyin in Thailand come from Chinese immigrants century ago, I guess common peoples in that time didn't concern that what is Mahayana what is Theravada. In case of Maitreya I think both Mahayana and Theravada have this belief.

A) first statue is Budai, a Mahayana-Chan Buddhist monk, who in SOME Mahayana sects and few Theravadins believe is an incarnation of the BODHISATTVA to come when the Dhamma of our age is no more, Maitreya. He will only become a Buddha when the teachings of this Buddha disappear and we are meant to learn the Maitreya dharma. B) “Budai” is a word that refers to essentially a satchel or bag carried on a pole; he was known to always have gifts for children and hence why he “always had a Budai with him” 3) the argument about how many Buddhas there are were/will be/are is a moot point because to Theravadins, Siddhartha is one of a finite number of Buddhas, there being a number (again depends, can be like 27-38) having existed before his time. To the Mahayana, there are thousands of Bodhisattvas and even Buddhas from alternate universes.
